I haven't had a chance to compare them, but I talked to Brad (who's ears I trust more than my own) says they do not work the same as the UAD plugs. Attack and release times differ. The conclusion was that they are good on their own, but not faithful recreations. Also, that the DBX plug is the bomb on bass.

Great link, thanks. The one thing I really like about the modern plug ins, is that they react more like analog equipment that I've used in the past. Most of the plug ins I've been playing with are very touchy, but the modern ones are subtle.starfinger wrote:gearwire talked about some of the antress plugs on the latest video podcast:

update: they have added more to this site from the time of this original post. Pretty much from the modern channel strike CS-1 down, if I'm not mistaken.ken wrote:http://www.modernplugins.in-tw.com/
I just found out about these free VST plug ins and they look amazing. I will have to try them out asap.

Not sure if these are posted already, but here is a cool set of free "Classic" plugins from Kjaerhus:
http://www.kjaerhusaudio.com/classic-series.php
Just the basics: reverb, chorus, flange, limiter, compressor... The master limiter seems to be especially promising. Just slap that puppy on the end of your mix.
OMG, these are mentioned in the first line of this thread... I should just delete this and never post again...
Well, here's another link with some stuff:

anything passable would have to be sample-based, and I don't know of any free string samples.Kill Me Sarah wrote:Are there any decent string VSTi's out there? Anything that would be kinda passable as orchestra stuff?
This is a decent, free string-like synth, though:

If you can get a sf2 compatble sample player for free (there's gotta be one out there, surely), there are a load of soundfonts here, some of which may be of use.
Oh, and a quick google shows a free soundfont player at the bottom of this page, maybe that'll do the job?

Thanks, I'll give the SoundFont player a try.

Wow, I just came across this:
http://www.philharmonia.co.uk/thesounde ... ies/notes/
An actual orchestra of free samples!
Here is a back up link:

You would need a sampler to load these into.
