Agreed! Ray, I thought better of you. Jethro Tull are awesome to the max. Peter Gabriel isn't too bad either.

Damn i feel terrible doing this. But i think I too must bow out for this round. After moving home from college for the summer and just starting my first (full-time) job today, there's just no time. I was really hoping to get a full band recording for this song but sadly no music or words have been written and I'd feel bad turning in a half-assed-guy-and-guitar-recorded-at-3-AM-making-up-lyrics-as-I-go-song. Just to get taken out of the competition because of it....

... *sigh*.... you know?

Anyways best of luck to you all and I'm really sorry to the people who totally could have entered this week and I took their place. :( my bad yo.....

my bad...

There is absolutely nothing "cool" about some beardy old idiot standing on one leg playing a flute. Or being able to say "Hi, I'm Peter. I used to be in a band with Phil Collins...."

Well, it certainly would be cooler if he had one peg leg like an old pirate, but a tough rogue playing flute, very well I might add, is pretty damn cool on it's own. The only thing cooler would be to see Lemmy playing Ace Of Spades on a stand up harp.

Speaking of King Crimson, their 90's song "Thrak" I believe is being played in two different time signatures at the same time by different members, and it's set up so everybody goes in and out with each other... umm I am going on memory here. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

I challenge that, they is plenty cool. There are also a bunch of beardy idiots around here, who I have no doubt would at least stand on one leg.

Bill, you're talking about gamelon. This derives from Bali and Java. It was the music for the shadow plays, often there would be a Ka Chuk performance as well.

King Crimson started using it heavily in the early 80's on Discipline and pretty much every album since. Frame by Frame has a main riff "head" of 6/8 over 7/8 (6 measures of 7 will line up with 7 measures of 6) giving that out of phase and back into phase feeling. Or as i call it "the windshield wipers are not in time with my stereo"

If you go check out my "All Tan" by Phillipso I do a gamelon with 7/8 over 8/8. Also look for it in the Brownie Points submission where I do 5/4 over 4/4.

They're different than polyrhythms in that the length of the beats are the same. So they go in and out of phase where as a polyrhthm does differnt amounts of beats within the same time.

Polyrhythm:

1XXX2XXX3XXX
1XX2XX3XX4XX

gamelon:

123123123123
123412341234

Against all reason, I'm in with possibly the most self-referential song ever recorded. I don't know nothin' 'bout no time signatures, so all I can tell you is how I had Cubase's tempo track set, which was 15/8 for the verse, 4/4 for the more different verse, and the chorus was mostly 7/4 with a few 4/4 bars nestled inside it.

We're in. We've got 4/4, 5/4, and 7/4. No complaining about us not meeting the challenge "enough" this time. ;) Of course, there may be other complaints about our song, we'll see...
