how do you go from 80's metal to today's metal

I listen to very little metal recorded after 1990 and absolutely none recorded after 2000.

Recommended bands for getting from Sabbath, Ozzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth... to what these crazy kids listen to today?

i don't know what these kids are listening to today, but i love sepultura... so that's a recommendation that may not apply to your goals.

You don't. (in reply to the subject) WELL... at least the image of metal you conjur up when you think 80s metal. I immediately think GLAM... and thats not something you can follow that leads you to current metal standards.

I don't think listening to Poison will lead you to listening to Coal Chamber.

However, Metallica, Megadeath, Motorhead, Carnivore, and Soundgarden can. (I'd even throw in the Deftones here if I didn't think they leaned a little more punk) Obituary... Slayer... Pantera... etc...

I don't buy into a lot of the nu-metal but I do love Coal Chamber, Soul Fly and can appreciate Korn and Tool. I absolutely love Type O' Negative but I wouldn't classify them amongst what is considered heavy metal these days.

This is very true. Glam was already discontinuous with the other forms of metal that co-existed with it. Especially after about 1983.

Go back to about 1978, and there is a clear common ground between (say) Van Halen and (say) Judas Priest. Already diverging, but still all metal.

It was still possible in the very early 80's for a band like Def Leppard to make a smooth transition from NWOBHM to pop/glam metal without anybody thinking they'd actually changed genres.

Flash forward just five years, and Priest's legacy has birthed such descendants as Metallica while Van Halen has paved the way for Motley Crüe.

The later in the 80's you go, the worse it gets. The only common ground whatsoever between Bon Jovi in 1988 and (say) Slayer in the same year, is that both tend to have guitar solos with a lot of fast high notes. That's it, they have nothing else in common that makes them both metal.

And then you had people like Guns N' Roses, which was a straight up rock and roll outfit, being marketed as metal because that's the only thing anybody knew how to market them as.

From what little I know about post-grunge metal, all metal that survived the Seattle onslaught is descended from varieties OTHER than glam. Glam metal was an evolutionary dead end.

So, no I am not looking for something that sounds like glam metal.

There are so many different ways you can go with this question that I don't even know where to begin.

Metal has evolved in many different ways over the years since the heavy metal die down in the early 90's. You had your grunge era and you had the despicable nu metal era. Right now, there's a wide open world of metal to choose from- you just have to figure out which path is yours.

If you're looking for a band that evokes 80's heavy metal sound but updates it for a new audience, I would probably suggest the band Trivium.

Or you could go straight up purist and listen to Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde's band.

There are still a ton of really heavy bands who are signed to either Roadrunner Records or Century Media. Century Media has more of the black/death metal while Roadrunner can stray into more alternative stuff (like Dresden Dolls...not what you're looking for). Check out the websites for both labels and you're bound to find some metal that suits your current fancy.

And also remember that a lot of 80's metal bands still exist. Metallica may have grown into a very different band but Megadeth hasn't. Pick up some recent Iron Maiden and its very similiar to old Iron Maiden (I suggest highly the song "The Wicker Man"). In fact, just recently there was a four day concert called Rocklohoma, where a ton of 80's metal bands played.

I have enjoyed, and tried to get into the Christ Illusion, but it just won't stick with me for some reason. Still, they are true to their craft, you gotta dig that (well, I dig it).

Kr0n is boring. BBBOOOORRRRIIINNNGGG.

System of a Down... pretty exciting stuff.

I dont' know about trying to source out music based on a label though... for example, I've been getting immersed in QOTS' Song's for the Deaf for the past week... not sure what kinda "metal" that is, but it's pretty fuckin good. When it came out, I just couldn't listen to it, it wouldn't grab me. NOw I"m hummin the tunes...

Dragonfarce...avoid that shit... SSSSHHHIIITTTT band.

And if you want a good retarded laugh, listen to SOD or MOD... ha! Rockin riffs and the stupidest lyrics ever... awesome.

I have just realized I can't think of, or really know, one good post 2006 heavy band.

An opinion piece:

I think Slayer's last really great album was South of Heaven. Unless you count their album of old punk/hardcore covers, which was really fantastic too. I was impressed with Christ Illusion for the first few listens, but then realised it was just because it was so well-produced and bludgeoning... the actual songs were only so-so, IMO.

QOTSA's latest album fucking sucks. It pains me to say this, because they're one of my favorite bands around. (I was listening to 'R' on my iPod at work today, asamatteroffact)

All I can say about Metallica is that everything they did after Master of Puppets sucks. I met the band once, and with the exception of J. Newstead, they were a bunch of conceited a-holes, contrary to the 'down to earth' image they try to portray.

The newest Deftones is fucking awesome. Get it. Only heavy band I listen to that goes from moody Depeche Mode-ish technotrance to brutal dissonant odd-time scream metal. Sometimes in the same song. Chino Moreno is in my top ten list of favorite vocalists, too.

Celtic Frost (I was a fanboy back in like 1987) put out a spectacular comeback album last year, reuniting singer Tom G. Fischer and Martin Eric Ain. This is the loudest album I've ever heard, production-wise. I can crank this up in the car so loud that the windows vibrate violently, yet it won't distort. Weird.

Gwar's new album is not very good. Oh well, I'd still like to see them live.

Helmet still rule. Monochrome has a couple clunkers on it, but otherwise a fresh-sounding and heavy-ass album.

The new Ozzy album sounds like music made for retards (by retards). What happened, Ozzy? Oh, wait... never mind. What a shame that this icon of heavy music came to this. SHAAARRROOONN!!!

Sorry I couldn't be of much help here. Just grow your hair really long and wear studded wristbands; the true metal will find you.

I think And Justice for All is very good, speaking of Metallica, but anything after that is only "ok" or I never heard it.

Don't doubt Frost. The music has changed a lot since back in the day. Take a listen to "A Dying God Coming Into Human Flesh". It takes a very minimal approach to building a song yet it comes off as something much larger and powerful.
