I'd forgotten how crappy it was to sleep on an air mattress. Back when I was in grad school I slept on one for like two years before I finally got a futon. Right now I'm borrowing an air mattress from a coworker since my furniture won't get here until Tuesday. Bleh.

Yesterday I got my new phone, the (just-released) Sony Ericsson W580i. It is quite nice. It does everything the iPhone does and then some (FM radio, you can use it as a Bluetooth modem - that's how I'm online right now for example, it has better email account management, it has a built-in pedometer since there's an accelerometer which does other things like gestural music playback controls, etc.). The "downside" is that it still uses T9 texting input (though they've improved it a LOT with even better prediction stuff!) but I actually prefer T9 to a non-tactile on-screen keyboard. I can touch-type in T9, but I doubt anyone will ever be able to touch-type on a glass screen.

Okay, so the UI isn't quite as svelte as iPhone, but a slightly more-complex (and still intuitive) UI which lets you just plain DO MORE is better anyway.

Today I'm going to buy furniture for my studio area (which is larger than I remember from the apartment tour!) and decide whether to paint my apartment or not. If I paint, I'll have to paint EVERYTHING since this yellowish color that's everywhere won't match very well with anything else, but if I do paint everything that turns it from a few hours' work (from just recoloring a few walls) into a major undertaking. Maybe I'll just hire someone to do it, although that puts it into a much higher expense bracket which isn't really ideal on a rental that I don't plan on being in for more than a year. Or maybe I'll just do my usual passive "get used to it" thing.

We have Aerobeds for guests and when we visit my mom. They're the best air beds I've used. I hate futons. We bought the kids a Fatboy bean bag, and I think I'll fall asleep every time I lay in it.

QotD: every room is different colors. All have white ceilings.
Master bedroom = blue/green
kids' bedroom = yellow
kids' playroom = off white, but the raised wall with fireplace is orange with colored squares.
Living room = mostly light mint green, with one wall yellow with bold colored oval outlines, the island has orange walls
Entrance foyer = yellow, and we're planning to paper the curved wall with those over-sized plant patterns
Stairs foyer = purplish blue
Bath 1 = yellow
Bath 2 = sort of a soft lime green

You shouldn't worry about painting walls for a year. You should feel at home and comfortable in your place. If it doesn't cost too much, make it nice!

The walls are all pretty boring colors except the one room we have painted, the ground floor bathroom, which is a light green. It's nice and light. Eventually we will probably paint elsewhere, but it's not a priority.

Also, I just discovered the W580i comes with a bunch of music tools on it! It has a chord chart (for both piano and guitar), a metronome, and a drum machine. Probably nothing useful to anyone here, but I thought it was cute anyway.

qotd: I'm not allowed to paint my walls in my apartment. In the kitechen they're white, but one wall is a light blue. Living room is tan. Everything else is white. Boring.

Last night I went to a bar and then a party with friends but I couldn't get drunk. I think it was because I felt depressed for some reason yesterday. That kinda sucked, but I'll try again tonight. I need to save the weekend.

Most of the house is done in three different shades of purple - a light purple, a cranberry-ish color, and a dark purple. In the kitchen / family room, the walls are white, with three stripes all the way around, one in each color. Living room and dining room are a light purple "string" wallpaper, with light purple painted ceiling.

Image

Studio is currently light blue; guest room is a tan string wallpaper, my bathroom is blue-themed wallpaper.

Been listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell today.

My music room is black with black levolor blinds on the window and track lighting on a dimmer. It really helps set the mood for me. The 8 track and mixer are retired to the garage and replaced with a 20" monitor and computer.
Image

Black and white kitchen and living room. Master bedroom sky blue and chickified, other rooms, white I think. Bathrooms some kind of lame chick shit. I know one has fish and sea shells that I stare at when I'ma poop'n. I don't think I've ever used the other bathrooms.

I took my apartment as is from when I lived two doors down so I could just move in right away. Two girls lived here before me...they painted the apartment.

Bedroom is green with some sort of 'we used a rag to make patterns' deal.

Living room is cream (flat)

Kitchen is same color as bedroom without all the 'we used a rag to make patterns' goodness.

Bathroom is almost yellow. I think they had a can of green, yellow, and white to do the apartment with. Probably mixed the yellow and white for the living room, the green and white for the bedroom. Yellow and white for the bathroom, although heavier on the yellow for that mix.

Also, changed out my power supply for my workhorse computer today. 300 to 350w (because the 350 was FREE or else I would have gone 400 or something). I also dusted it (including the processor fan) and my god it is working WAY better. (I.E. Faster and cleaner) It's also considerably quieter...almost as quiet as my studio computer.

I had to change out the power supply though, the fan on it stopped working a couple of months ago and I've had a huge fan back there blowing INTO it to keep it from starting a fire!

I'm going to watch the Bucs lose now...later

A few years ago I'd have ridiculed you for thinking that changing the power supply and dusting the CPU fan would have anything to do with actual performance, except these days many CPUs are temperature-sensing and actually do slow down when they heat up.

Well, the power supply still has nothing to do with that, but blowing out the CPU fan is actually useful...

Though, how can a computer run "cleaner?" (Or is that in reference to a cloud of dust which rises up around it?)

I don't exactly have an answer for 'cleaner'...its really just faster and that 'seems' cleaner. Like instead of seeing the hour glass hang or certain windows freeze their mark over another one. Thats eliminated and my processor (and I have been watching) doesn't stay at 100% when running certain programs. (and I swear it WAS before the routine maintenance)

I might have accidentally made some other improvement while working on it..who knows. But its certainly working better..its quite noticeable.

Well, yeah, like I said, modern CPUs actually do run faster when they're cooler, and cleaning out your CPU fan will help them to stay cool. I'm not disputing the speed increase!

Yeah, and next you'll insist that 'de-fragging' might somehow help my hard drive perform better. Some nerve. ;-)

(yeah, I sometimes think that message boards doesn't always convey the tone the poster was originally going for...and for that I apologize) :-)
