THE ULTIMATE GREATEST SOMETHING MUSICAL LIST

Post by Leaf »

Yep. Post your listed opinion for all to see and bicker about.

MY FAVOURITE DRUMMERS:

1) Dave Weckl- fusion/jazz great.
2) Terry Bozzio- Zappa, fusion, solo. Blow your mind.
3) John Bonham- duh.
4) Stewart Copeland- double duh.
5) Ginger Baker- get his "jazz" trio cd... he rocks, even when he's playing jazz!!
6) Lars Ulrich. He may be a prick, but he was mega influential, and had some totally bizarre ideas. Anyone who plays 8 bars of a tune, then stops to re-tune his snare, then punches in (damage inc.) is a nut. But I love it.
7)Herlin Riley.... his solo on Uptown Ruler... wow.
8)Buddy Rich... another complete bastard who will blow your mind. He's low on my list cause he was such a prick to his players, but still, wicked drummer.
9)Brad Wilk - mega influence in style.
10) Jimmy Cobb - ultimate cool jazz drummer feel.

....Drummer's World is awesome!!!

That's my list. Whatcha got?

With sticks.

I know nothing about drumming except for hitting big things with sticks and making a lot of noise.

My favourite Christmas song is "Have yourself a Merry Little Christmas"

My favorite Christmas song is "Baby, it's Cold Outside." As heard on Elf, my favorite Christmas movie. Followed by "Let it Snow."

And of course, Beck's "Little Drum Machine Boy."

Why did you choose American in Paris over Rhapsody in Blue?

Hmmm. I find RIB to be less accomplished - more a stringing together of jazz-influenced sequences, almost like a medley overture to a musical. The tunes are great, but the whole piece doesn't hold together as seamlessly. AIP was more ambitious, and even though it's almost the exact same overall structure as RIB, it holds together better for me, and the slow movement is such a killer tune.

So I take it you prefer RIB?

One of the many great memories I have from the Penny Arcade Expo trip in Seattle involves Blue and I coming up with alternate lyrics to Octothorpe's "Is It Cold?" While Spud drove us around everywhere.

That whole trip was just incredible anyway, though.

ROCK!

He played our high school in 1987. Yes, I opened for Buddy Rich. He really was incredible.

As far as favorite Drummers & Xmas Songs, it's very close to Jim Tyrrell's list, look at his & add Steve Gadd & The Nutcracker Suite.

Favorite Xmas recordings:

Please Come Home For Christmas - Eagles
Merry Christmas Darling - Carpenters
A Baby Just Like You - John Denver
Traditions of Christmas - Mannheim Steamroller
Little Saint Nick - Beach Boys
12 Pains of Christmas - Bob Rivers
Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Bruce Springsteen

good one.. in fact their whole christmas album was pretty good. when i was little, that got quite a few spins in the ole 8-track player.

also regarding manheim steamroller: fantastic stuff. listened to a couple of those tapes (and later CDs) nonstop for a few christmases. his version of "silent night," "i saw three ships," and both versions of "god rest ye merry, gentlemen" are among my favourite interpretations of xmas songs.

(incidentally, the albums i am mentioning all belonged to my mom, who puts christmas CDs on repeat from basically thanksgiving through new years -- so being in the house around the holidays is just as bad as listening to the radio or going to a store. this is why i earlier mentioned how much i truly despise christmas music: severe overexposure.)

oh and also no list would be complete without run dmc's "christmas in hollis"

To my knowledge there has only ever been 2 good Christmas songs:

1. Fairytale of New York - The Pogues
2. How to Make Gravy - Paul Kelly

(for those unfamiliar - lyrics to the Paul Kelly song below)

edit:

on second thoughts, make that 3:

3. Home and Broken Hearted - Cold Chisel

To the good Christmas songs list I want to add:
"Twelve Days of Christmas" by the McKenzie Brothers.
