Well, in my own defense (and I'm going to discuss the rich history of doom), I'm a huge Earth fan as well, and am getting into Grief too. I agree that Sunn O))) is sort of being put on a pedestal, but I don't think it's entirely undeserved. It's pretty incredible stuff, very different than any of the original doom bands (there's not really a riff to be found), and very enjoyed by me. But I do try and do my homework, I at least have Paranoid yeah? From there I went to Fu Manchu and stumbled my way to Earth and Sunn O))). Don't really like Boris that much, though.

Been listening to Feist's "Let it Die" nearly non-stop this week.

Bought the CD for $10.99 after doing enough research on YouTube to decide that I needed the album. It was a very good purchase.

Yeah, I guess my beef isn't really with Sunn O))) themselves. They have their moments, and especially the Merzbow collab tracks on Flight of the Behemoth are good. The drone and absence of riffing are purely the influence of Earth, though. It's just distressing to me to see them be lauded as innovative when they're aping their influences so clearly (they even have a song called "Dylan Carlson"), and to see them profiting so well off it when bands like Grief have been around 15 years and probably never broken even. (Not that you were doing any of that. I think I probably just saw your post and got touchy. Sorry about that.)

On a more positive note, I think one of Stephen O'Malley's other bands, Khanate, is very good and has a pretty unique sound. If you're into the super-sludgy river-of-syrup stuff you might want to check out Ttssattsr by Black Mayonnaise. I can talk about metal and its various goofily-monikered subgenres all day if you're interested.

And yeah, j$, it's pretty hard to talk about 'sludge' or 'brutal death' metal and not feel silly.

Yeah I love that song too. I have it on my computer. It's probably the best non-Melvin song in SF that I've heard.

I haven't actually heard that Yeah, the earlier stuff I think you would dig, e.g. I feel like you would enjoy "Young God" or "Cop" given your descriptions above. My favorite is "Children of God" but that might not be to your taste.

Not sure how others hear music...something none of us can ever know...but I am totally blown away by how much better I hear fast guitar phrases after spending a good chunk of the past year working on my speed guitar playing.

I guess I gotta start working on my chords and arrpeggios now so I can better appreciate ... something.


But Kill 'Em all... man. Lars had so many great ideas... I think as he got older he started sacrificing those ideas for some concept of simplicity that ...while noble...is kinda contrary to his greatness. LARS!! Get back to being risky and musically frivilous!!! It was so ROCKING!!!!

I think if you get the new CD though, you'll be disappointed. HFXNSHC (Halifax, Nova Scotia Hard Core) is a gem amongst a bunch of radio friendly pap. Okay, maybe that's harsh, but it's hard to listen to this, then the rest of the album. Top notch songwriting, etc., throughout. It'll grow on me. Maybe.

This coming from a seriously long-time fan. (I had 'Smeared' on vinyl back in 1993) I just saw them play at a club here about a month ago. Great show.

Well, there's nothing wrong with making a living. Sometimes that's the only way to squeeze in a few good songs for the real fans.
