Today I went shopping with my cousin and Barnes & Noble has a thing where you can listen to samples of the tracks on CDs by scanning the barcode... so I checked out the "London Calling" and it's great, so I bought it.

I'm starting to see London Calling pop up in record shops all around Brisbane on the bargain tables for $9.99 (~US$5 - normal CD prices here are around $30). Strangely I'm starting to find this a bit offensive - like it's sacrilegious or something.

I mean - the bargain table is for Pan Pipe Hits or 20 Great Canadian Rock Bands - not the greatest album of all time!

isn't it because of the special edition that just came out?

It's been on 'Nice Price' for about 10 years. In fact when it first came out, it was a double album for the price of a single, so there is a certain continuity.

You know, I bought the 25th anniversary edition and listened to the 'demos' CD that came with it, and as an amateur musician it is amazingly heartening to hear the poor quality of performance and recording compared to the finished product. I mean, you can still hear the amazing amazing songs shining through, but at the same time, you think, well, crap, just about everyone here on Songfight has better recording techniques than this

it's remastered, but no extra disk.

Certainly is. And a grower too. The extra CD is unneccessary - 5 never before released songs which display exactly why they were never released before, and a DVD (which I haven't watched yet.) My major displeasure is that it comes in one of those flimsy cardboard CD boxes which for 3 discs, you know is going to collapse in about 25 seconds.

If I have counted correctly, I would have 19 cover songs to be part of in this thread, if I chose to do every one of them.

No promises, but I will try to get to all of them if the other members of each project are willing. I am getting organized today, and making a master list of the recommendations that involve me.

future boy - the flaming lips' "bad days"

I choose it because I have such faith in your bass playing. But if it's too much of a bitch that song (I know it's a tough one), I wouldn't mind hearing you cover "Innocent" by Our Lady Peace. I think your voice which is considerably lower that the OLP guy's could really change the feel of the song to something darker.
