I was talking with a coworker the other day about forgotten bands of the 80s, and I mentioned the Slickee Boys. This video is amazing. Peak 80s plus a dash of cable access with a side of VHS. Worth it for the intro alone.

AMAZING intro!

Check out my friend's spooky new music video, just released today! I wasn't involved in any of the actual music-making, but I am the Ominous Necromancer playing melodica and bass in the video. My husband is the Grim Reaper.

So it turns out Hrishikesh Hirway came up with the idea for his Song Exploder podcast while reading a poem in a book by Walter Murch. I love everything about this.

I love the synth bassline. That looks like a CZ5000 in the video, was that used for the keys? Proud rocker of the CZ3000 myself.

I read through the comment thread looking for two things: “That’s the wurst song I’ve ever heard”; and argument over the tonal properties of knackwurst vs. weisswurst etc. I was not disappointed.

I've been watching her videos of late, something about her and her music is enticing. Haven't seen this one, yet.

I'm just really tempted to get that guitar, even though I already have enough guitars AND MIDI controllers

While being a massive Leonard Cohen fan, I’m mostly of the opinion that Hallelujah should be retired to the special vault for amazing songs that should never be heard again, and then a video like this comes along and makes me want to listen to it again.

(Seriously, one time I was walking along Grafton St in Dublin and heard two people playing it at either end simultaneously. Stop! Stop!)

(Side note: I discovered Leonard Cohen as a teenager from Hallelujah in the week that Jeff Buckley’s version was released, when an announcer on Triple J in Australia played them back-to-back at 11pm. I went on to borrow all Cohen’s CDs from the library, unaware that he was a big deal, because I couldn’t find his music in any of the shops at the time. Had a similar teenage situation with Elvis Costello, and those two are now some of the biggest subconscious influences on everything I make. Thanks, libraries!)

People have been setting Trump's bananas notes page to music--click through for a Ramones pastiche, an emo version, and two Smiths versions (the second one substantially better).

Oh, and his handwriting is a font called Tiny Hands, now, too. I hate to admit it, but I...actually kind of like it? it reminds me of old French-language comics. Or maybe the Disney font.

Bridge over troubled water is probably my favourite album of all time, but I didn’t love the title track at all until I heard the demo version at the end of the CD copy we own for the very first time. It’s simpler and less overblown than the final version, and it was super interesting to watch this video and find out that Paul wrote it originally as a small song with only two verses.

Edit to add this article that Toshiro sent me a few days ago:
Fifty years after Bridge Over Troubled Water, as another decade begins on a note of apprehension and exhaustion, the anguished protest hidden inside this overplayed song is easier to appreciate. In the face of what Garfunkel would call “the chaos of what the hell is the whole thing about”, you’re reminded how much weight one song can carry.

Really enjoyed the video (and article), thanks for posting. Paul Simon is one of my favorite songwriters, but awww Garfunkel is a blessing.

In exchange, here is a mariachi cover of "Take On Me". That casual trumpet solo!

and a gif I saw yesterday that made me laugh

My daughter shared this clever video. I'd call it The No. 10 Downing Rhythm Band.

Is the 9th telegraphed or just gratuitous coloration?

It didn’t feel appropriate to put this on the other thread, but i love this tribute to a hell of a songwriter. Seriously, we’ll miss you Adam.

This Smithsonian interview with EVH from 2015 has a bunch of gold nuggets. Talks about moving to the US, building his Frankenstein guitar, how he came up with tapping and more.
