I found what I heard from their first album to be a little too precious in a "Hee! We're playing kitchen stuff as percussion!" kind of way (but without the charm of Psapp), but they've clearly learned a lot of restraint since then, because this release gets it exactly right.

Aliens - 'Astronomy for Dogs'

Nouvelle Vague's new comp of electro bands' classic covers, 'New Wave'.

OMD covering 'Waiting For The Man' (sic), is particularly awesome - and produced by Martin Hannett (I discover from reading 'Who killed Martin Hannett?'), which most likely explains why it's so much better than most of their recorded output (which i like anyway but with a modicum of guilt)

What can I say? My eMusic quota refreshed, and I got a good crop of stuff this time around.

The Early November 3-CD set "The Mechanic, The Mother, and the Path". CD 3, "The Path", is a story that is like awesomely done...

i got the new frank black cd bluefinger in the mail yesterday. he's going by his pixie's name again; black francis.
basically, this sounds like what would have been the next pixies cd. it's much more varied in sound than his last two nashville releases (that i didn't like nearly as much as his catholics stuff).
also, his new wife sings on a lot of the second half of the cd, and it's nice to hear a female voice backing up frank. (the duet on honeycomb was, in my opinion, horrible).
anyway, if you liked the pixies but don't like frank black's solo stuff (shame on you; "dog in the sand" is one of the best cds ever recorded), you may like this.

hi guys. it's been a while! i'm glad you're enjoying the album, thehipcola.

here's a couple things i've been listening to lately:

liars - liars
this is probably the most digestable of the liars' records, but it's still weird as hell. a couple of days ago i got the opportunity to see them play an in-store at a record store in town and it was pretty excellent. i heard a lot of sonic youth in the guitar tones and i don't think i can get tired of that.

mouth of the architect - the ties that blind
one of the best sludge/psychedelic metal albums i've heard in a while. very much along the lines of isis or cult of luna, these guys are very good at making meloncholy metal, which i imagine is pretty difficult!

animal collective - strawberry jam
i've actually had this record for a while. it got leaked in early july and i couldn't resist. i've listened to it several times and i'm still not quite sure what to think of it. i was able to catch them on the feels tour, which is when they started playing a lot of these songs, and the album sounds a lot like the live show. it's a lot rawer and more energetic than feels and it lacks the drawn out drones and soundscapes that i really liked about that record. but whatever, it's still good.

i just got a hold of Mule Variations by Tom Waits. It is mind numbingly awesome.

Just wanted to second hipcola's recommendation to check out C.Layne's Shark Week album... especially recommended as a good example of what double-tracking vocals sounds like when it's done right.

The shuffle thing just decided I should listen to "Anthem." I had kind of forgotten how much ass early Rush rocks. Now that is a power trio.

Sonata Arctica - Unia. Great melodic modern prog rock. Tony Kakko's voice is fantastic, with a Queen vibe in the vocal harmonies. Tommy Portimo is a really tight drummer too. Also of note, I get to see them live in a matter of months!

My person favourites have been Big In Japan, What Is He Building In There, Eyeball Kid and Filipino Box Spring Hog. I think a Tom Waits cover fight should be on the cards.

Some rockin' old bands whose lack of mainstream fame is probably due to picking really dumb band names.
