The video thing was just my shorthand method to figure things out, since most of us weren't there to see any of it first hand. Of all the Chicago songs I looked/listened (and it was many), the only one that qualified stylistically was If you leave me now.bzl wrote:I think it depends on the song, and also on the music video that they made for the song. Glenn just turned me on to this.
Stand back in awe as Hostess Mostess reveals their undying, albeit slightly embarassed, love for Juice Newton: "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)".
So glad to have an excuse to sing that out loud.

I'm thinking Todd Rundgren is fair game...? "Hello, It's Me" and "Can We Still Be Friends" could certainly use some spicing up from roymond.

Shit. I'm listening to Juice now, and I forgot how hard it rocks. It seriously rocks. Damn it. Speedboat rock, maybe. No yacht.jb wrote:Yeah, there's a difference between a "smooooooth" ballad and a ballad that's intended to be "stirring". Although some tread the line, the stirring ballads are often much too strident to qualify as "smoooooooth".
We may still ding in for "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts, which we hate, but with a gentle and compassionate sort of hate.

A few other potential choices that I could hear Hostess Mostess doing a great job with (pending approval from Moboid) are:Mostess wrote: We may still ding in for "Summer Breeze" by Seals and Crofts, which we hate, but with a gentle and compassionate sort of hate.

I've been thinking about doing Sara Smile. Perhaps now would be a good time to claim it.

With Moboid's approval can we force Hostess Mostess to do any song we wish? That would be fun!GlennCase wrote:A few other potential choices that I could hear Hostess Mostess doing a great job with (pending approval from Moboid) are:
Also, anyone hear Jonathan Coulton's Soft Rocked By Me? which is very funny.[/url]

Actually, go ahead. Roymond and Glenn are in charge of assigning me a Moboid-approved song. I spent about an hour working out a guitar arrangement for "Summer Breeze" that's pretty nice, but it's such an insipid song now that I get so close to it. I can't bring myself to practice it any more.roymond wrote:With Moboid's approval can we force Hostess Mostess to do any song we wish? That would be fun!
Glenn and Rachel did such a nice live rendition of our "Unless I Change My Mind", it's the least I can do.

I'll take it! (if it hasn't been taken already - which is doesn't seem to be in an albeit brief zip up and down this thread.) ps Your dedication to your role (watching/listening to many chicago songs in a row) is impressive.

Oh, actually, I meant songs, as in, piling them up and watching you crank out cover after cover after cover after...sort of kidding, ya know?Mostess wrote:Actually, go ahead. But wow, Summer Breeze is pretty untouchable, isn't it? Even The Residents would have difficulty.

I'm still going through things and have only hit about half of the episodes to catch directly referenced songs. Looking back through songs done by groups with already approved songs and some from the one-hit wonders link, I was curious about these...
- "Holdin' On To Yesterday", Ambrosia (from 1975...too early or not quite the right style?)
- "I'd Really Love To See You Tonight", England Dan & John Ford Coley (one of the songs from that one-hit wonder link)
- "A Love Song", Loggins & Messina (from 1973...it's Loggins & Messina but maybe too early of a 70's sound?)
- there was also a Pure Prairie League song on that list, but I wanted to confirm that "Amie" from 1972 is either too early or too country
I have plenty more to sort through, but I keep finding myself drawn to the songs that don't quite fit (like all the early folky/acoustic Loggins & Messina songs). At this point I would probably go with one of the above if approved. Otherwise, I am certainly open to suggestions if anyone has any ideas.

Fun fact that is pertinent but perhaps frightening:jack wrote:what about "afternoon delight" by the starland vocal band?
If one were to stand in the doorway of my studio and peer inside, one would see twenty or thirty vinyl records leaning against the side of a small bookcase, waiting, as they have for years, to at least be considered for dubbing onto compact disc. The only album cover readable from across the room proclaims the artist in a delightfully tacky 70's font: Starland Vocal Band.
But hear me now:
That record contains an a capella cover of Paul Simon's "American Tune" that is to die for.
First Mate GlennCase clearly knows his Hook, and his assessment is correct.
