I like the change around :22, and the melody that follows it. It's John Lennon-esque in my opinion. Goes on over and over, a few too many times but I like it. I like the stops. The chord structure could use more variation, but other than that it's a nice little song that sounds like it has some emotion behind it.

The vocals are a little obtrusive. It's all happening so fast that I don't quite get to grab onto a solid melody. The generic chord pattern could be changed to make it a little more interesting...a couple minor-two chords, minor-sixth's. Anything minor. But that could just be me. I like the ending phrase quite a bit.

A Late Thaw
I'm drinking a drink with ice and I thought my ice cubes crackled in the beginning at about :14 in, but it was just the guitar slide. Pretty cool. I like the vibe on that guitar, the choice of arpeggios is right up my alley. This is still feeling great at :42. I don't mind that it didn't have lyrics before then. When they come in, I like the Thom Yorke vibe and almost like the batch of reverb thrown on there but might rather it be an even larger room reverb, but mixed lower. I thought the song died a little around a minute and a half in, and could've been shorter. But I liked the peaceful calming feeling of it alot.

Nice entry after that last tune. Guitars are a little loud. Or maybe I'd just bump em down in the 800hz range at width of about 1.5 octaves, a couple db. I think the tone is massive, huge, but a littlle heavy in the mid/low range. I love the oh-oh's. And chilin' with the bottle. And the "come down if we're gonna go". That's a damn catchy chorus. Nice.

I almost thought it was going to start like Damage, Inc. but it busted into some punk stuff. I like the held out feedbacky stuff. The guitar is a manufactured sounding thing like Andrew's but with less low and a little fuzzier. This needs the Green Day guitar tone. But it's pretty hard hitting and catchy.

There's a couple nice ideas like the break at :54, breakdown to mellow guitar. A couple funny lines too, but not really grabbing me. And I like to be grabbed.

Flvxxvm Florvm
This is a bit like La Grange too, once it kicks in. But it rocks more in a weird video-game-ish way. I don't get the spiderman reference. All in all, it moves along.

The Hand Formula
It's a solid title line, I'll give you that, some attempts at good hooks, the fever/flu lyric, I like.

The "fuck out of existence" line is powerful, with the std/hiv implication. The whole lyric is impressive throughout. I could go for a louder, more distorted bass, and a guitar without that flanging or phasing sound that's going on. I agree about the destruction. This is a bit of a sign o' the times.

Jonathan Mann and the BSS
My first thought was wondering how many people, who does what, in this group?
I like the sound. The drums could'a kicked in a little louder, some vocal harmonies would've been nice (besides in the group title line part). By 1:30 i'm getting bored with it but it pulled me in a little on "some kid selling lemonade". I like the line "the only thing that matters is that nothing matters, anyhow". That's the high point of the song, for me...and the slide guitar on the right. Wished the very last, repeating chorus had a build-up into a mad cello/violin or rock band section instead of the repeating chorus.

Lyric Burglar
Sounds a little fruity, a little reaching for the vocal melody. It's a little loose all around which contributes to a feeling of reckless abandon; I like that about it. Less reverb would be appreciated on the lead guitar and vocal. Nice hollow-y bass tone. Turn it up. Annoying on the "nah nah nah".

Steel drums / reggae, I like. The whole tune actually works for me and makes me smile. Fuck, I totally agree with the lyrical theme. I like how it sounds like yer smiling the whole time and the choice of doubled vocal.

Melvin
I mean, how can I NOT like the sound of those samples. This is all bling and $. But can't help loving it. And the frame of mind. By the time you get to "hands in the air" and then the Snoop Dog gin n' juice line, i'm hooked. This is some fucked up shit. Crazy, good in a way I just wanna hate. I'm dyin'. Even the choice to repeat the Snoop Dog line that time 2/3 the way thru, and the "uh". Fucking great. Great shift in vocal melody at about two and a half mins in. I can see a dance club just pumping, thousands of people just getting down to this shit....you gotta release the single. This is a fucking hit, and it's probably safe to do as a parody.

Noah McLaughlin
I like the driving rock feel, though I'd like to hear a Bon Scott voice here, like an AC/DC voice. I like the little pick-me-up in the second half of the verse, keeps things moving. Change to the distorted vocal, I like that too. The outro change to 1-2 was a nice surprise. More screaming!

Octothorpe
This song really cracked me up on "find your inner ear". I like the idea of the muppet band doing this one, it's all I can picture. It's actually catchy chorus with the "calm down" and that aforementioned inner ear line. I like the goofy simplicity of the keyboard and guitar solo. I like the interesting choice of instruments as well and the groovy and "to the max". I also like where Oscar the Grouch jumps in on the last verse for a line. Great imagery of childhood daydreams.

Puppies and Flowers
The chorus reminds me of something I can't place but I like it. I think I'm thinking of Pixies, that chorus vocal. I like the 7/8 situation going on at times, and really like the lyrical progression as it goes through the second verse and into that second chorus. And the hooky chromatic guitar line. Scream that growl shit! Louder, bitch! Tension like a brick won't break. I like how it moves into sheer madness halfway through. I'm hearing voices. This is like the work of a schizophrenic eunuch. That's a good band name. This HAS to be a cover of a Schizophrenic Eunuch song. You ever heard of em?! I think they toured with Meatknob a while back.

Holy fuck was the distorted mix intended? I haven't really read the thread in full so I don't know if that's been mentioned. It hurts, i mean fuck, it's a good song going on but really straining the ears trying to listen to it with that distorted madness.

Sockpuppet
My first thought is that the "everything's gonna be alright" and "nothing's gonna change" probably repeated more times than they needed to and got a little rough on the latter, near the end of the song. This feels more like it belongs with a different title. Show the "monster" all of your love sounds a little, well, suggestive; which made me smile.

Noel
I liked that acoustic entrance of the song. And some of the lines, I really like, like "drive you down" and "psych you out". Maybe thats not the right lyric, I could check it but I like to hear the lyrics as I hear them, without the lead sheet. More fun that way. Nice peaceful solo. Reminds me of a cross between that "hey there Delilah" song and the Shins.

Todd McChatton
This starts off pretty fat, I like the whole mix, the bass, the spread, light little guitars, the steady 2-4 snare. Nice tasty guitar licks, moving grooving bass. This is pretty nice. I read Leaf's comments earlier so I was probably biased, but this is a pretty fat song, in between a Grateful Dead and some other. I like the clean guitar tones. Could'a put a touch of overdrive on there just a tiniest bit for the solo, esp. Ending falls apart a bit but I liked the vibe alot.

Tuba Toothpaste
Squeezin like a tube of greasy t.p. It's a pretty funny sounding take on some serious issues. I thought maybe it should've slowed to half time at some point, the drum line gets pretty boring after a while. Nice horns though. The horns are the hook of the song, I think.

The Weakest Suit
I think it's pretty funny when the vocal effects come in on "calm down" right after taking the hit off the joint. I like how the song is from the joint's perspective. Entertaining, esp. with that vocal flange effect when the joint gets smoked.

In summary: It's hard to summarize while I still have the Weakest Suit's song in my head...there's alot of songs here that use fundamentals from other "famous" songs. That surprises me. I can't really say there's much here that really, really feels totally original, yet has heart and soul to it and is memorable as well. It's like, if Melvin's fantastic creative idea was built around his own melodies/backline, then I'd be fucking screaming for that song. A few other cool things going on that were pretty well done, so i'm glad I made it through the reviews. I guess it's just the plight of being humans in the 21st century. Most ideas, at this point in time, are really just a rehashing of stuff already done...but in a new way. I still won't let it rest. Fuck that. Bring me the new Led Zeppelin. Was it the Mars Volta? Nope. It hasn't happened yet.

Reviews / Comments / Voting cheat sheet. I apologize for both my tardiness and brevity.

Today we're employing the binary smiley methodology in reviews.

Aardwolven. Hey, I'm a vegetarian. I hear a degree of imaginary arpeggiation here due to the compression artifacts. Or the crab. But it's a good track none the less.

A. Dachis. Easy vote.

A Late Thaw. Listening in headphones, I'm not particularly fond of the way your voice pans back and forth through my head. Were this faster and more jangley, it could be a smiths song. Which would have cooler.

A. Wreist. This is excellently produced rock music. They would play this on my local alt-rock station for sure.

BLT. Billy always rocks, and continues to display his rock prowess here. My bit of constructive criticism is that the delays really don't work at your high skill level. It winds up sounding more cheesy bad than cool or even cheesy kitch. However, this minor qualm has no impact on the easy decision to vote for you.

Blues Manufacturing Facility. If this had ended with noisefuzzoutcrazies at say, 2.20, it would have been an easy vote. But it went on too long.

Finding Nemoy. Vote. Personally, I feel that the song is strong enough that it would have benefited from a less experimental arrangment. But that's me.

F. Florvm. The mix here is fantastic.

Gert. This was very well executed as well. But it was kind of a scatterplot, stylistically. Granted, sometimes that works. But here it just sounded kind of disconnected.

Hand Formula. One of my favorites of the fight. BUT it should have stopped ~ 1:20. Still, double plus smiley.

J. Cashpoint. Mr. Cashpoint, if the old voting were in place, I'd have voted for you. Why? Because you are a genius. Don't let anyone tell you different.

J. Mann et. al. While good, this could have been far more fantasticer had it gone a little more "Black Rider," ditched the electric guitar solos, and dropped about a minute and a half. I had originally given you no-vote, but you had the good fortune of following J$'s track... so after reapeated listens your song grew on me. So hey,

L. Burglar. I admire you. But this one didn't really grab me.

MC Eric B.

Melvin. Because you're so skilled, I hold you to a higher standard.

N. McLaughlin. This was good, and certainly the right length.

Octothorpe. Well, since my song was really just a really an excuse to yell "Octothorpe for president," it's clear I dig the 'thorpe. And this did not disappoint.

Puppies con Flowers. This rocked, but it's too quiet. Turn it up, eh?

R. Mosquito. Wow, my song suxxored -- sorry. If anyone wants to re-sing it for me I'll send ya a non-destroyed mix. Takers?

Sock Puppet. The drums should go straighter. It leaves me feeling a bit loopy at the end

Noel. I thought you were going to go into a weird time scheme with the false start, which would have been cooler. Still, smiley face. Some songs benefit from the lo-fi approach, and this is one of them.

T. McHatton. I like your clown-themed lyrics a great deal, but the underlying music seems randomly assigned.

Tuba Toothpaste. This could benefit from more diverse instrumentation. It sounds a little too keyboard demo song to really suck the listener in. I'm sorry.

I love each and every one of you, though. Even if I'm stingy with my votes.

Here is an edit of the Jonathan Mann and the Berkeley Social Scene entry that is about 30 seconds shorter. It's not necessarily better, just shorter. I like both versions, personally.

Apologies - I have been very slack in recent fights with getting reviews up. And now all the big, scary Canadians have blown in and telling us all to do reviews, so I am feeling the heat (although we all know that they can't play rugby and just skate around like little girls covered in padding with crash helmets on and want to sing like Nickelback.....pooftahs)

That comes from recording the guitar solos before the lyrics were done. There was one spot in the solo just before the "Spiderman" verse where the improvised soloing just happened to remind me a little bit of the melody from this. Second verse was quickly written to play up on that. That and the fact that I'd heard this on the radio the very day.

Some Guy Called Noel: You must live in Silverlake, and worship Elliot Smith. I love this song. Although I can't help missing Elliot Smith listening to this. Great guitar finger picking, nice breathy Elliot Smith vocals. This is a keeper. Though just short of a vote.

Todd McHatton: Wow man, where did you come from? last few fights you've had just wonderful submissions. This song sounds great. I think the song is just dopey and dumb. I can't give it a vote. This will be the 1st time I'm not voting for you. I imagine you'll usually earn votes. Yeah the music and playing is great, just the lyrics that happen o bug, though I usually try and ignore lyrics.

Tuba Toothpaste- A silly sounding song, with pretty straight lyrics. Something this cheesy really needs to be funny for me to like it. That drum machine is grating. There's some nice melodies floating in there. I like the horn accents. I hate the keyboard tone.

Weakest Suit- This is pretty cool. Kind of a departure from your usual. I enjoy this, not enough for a vote. It's all about the distorted "Calm Down".


Pretty good fight! The Gert song severely rocks, if there were but one vote Gert would take it for me.

BLT: How did your production get so awesome recently? I got your email about backing vox for this (too late arsehole) - but I will admit - there is nothing I could have added to this. (I tried to do some demented screaming - but it made my daughter cry, so I gave up). This is just plain brilliant. Double-plus-good.

J$ - Wonderful lyrics. And wonderful arrangement. A year ago this would have been an easy winner. Standards have risen since you have been away!

Finding Nemoy - Loved this. No explanation needed. I just loved this.

Gert: Wonderful. I am not usually a fan of Gert's North American rock stylings - but there is so much variety in this it is hard not to love. And of course, STMike is the King of Vocalists (who is the chorus vocal? Deshead? Also very cool). Great work boys.

Melvin - This doesn't sound like Weezer! Suffice to say, this is not my choice of genres - but this is really well done, and I can't help but liking it. Great use of sample, great chorus. Well done. The "so young gifted and white" line is wonderful. As is the "hands in the air boots on the ground" line.

Reistmeister: First - i think you stole that opening riff (minor complaint - I don't know where from and I'm sure it wasn't intentional). That aside - This is awesome! Damn! How old are you? Shit I wish I could have done this at your age. Quit your moaning about your singing or whatever. You have got it going on now dude. You have improved completely out of sight. Please remember your weird old friends when your are famous and tour Australasia.

Flucksom Florum VS Lyricburglar: FF Wins! I really love this. The techno beat with the ragged guitar is great. Great stuff.

Todd McHatton - This sounds like The Monkees! Of course I'm going to vote for it! Awesome!

Octothorpe - Very good, despite the self-referentiality. Love the lead vocals.

MCEricB VS Lyricburglar - DRAW! - Let me guess - you are not actually Jamaican are you? The reggae is a nice idea, but your timing falls down badly. That aside - I love how you improve in the slow , steady way - like continents shifting. You have a chorus hook this week! And it is a pretty good hook. Great work. I'd still recommend you cut down on the Band-in-a-Box stuff and just work with simple beats. Use your voice to add melody. Checkout Starfinger's back catalogue - he does a lot with just beats and stuff.

Sockpuppet - Song is pretty good. Could work well. Like the vocals - but timing is making it sound jarring

SGCNoel - I like the song. Guitar a bit overpowering. needs a delicate production - harmonies, strings etc. Could be really cool.

Weakest Suit - Not bad. You've done better. Good vocals and good hooky chorus. I'm not really into druggy songs I suppose - otherwise I would probably like it a lot more.

Adam Dachis - Shit! This sounds like Mr G

TubaToothpaste - Not at all bad. Not grabbing me.

Jan 2004 (roughly) - June 2007 Tie-Mic, held in hand, shouted into. Managed to blow it up otherwise would still be using it. Loved that tone.

June 2007-current day - wrap-around gaming headphone / microphone combo, put on table six inches away and shouted at. tried wearing it, kept banging my face against it.

It's like 5 great songs in one. The funky verse guitar riff and drums remind me of something Nuno Bettencourt would do. Someone mentioned that the chorus line, "everybody calm down" had problems. Not for me, quite the opposite. It absolutely pushed the song into greatness. It loosened up the mix enough to keep it real and emotional.
