Songfight! Boston August 12-13 (I Know My Rights)

Set up live gigs with each other, announce gigs you're playing around the country or whatever, talk about how the show went, post links to recordings, etc.

Sets will probably be (generally) in the 20-30 minute range, with some variations; it depends on how many people are coming, who they are and how much stage time I can get us in total. Anyone who has some songfight! entries and wants some time is welcome to it. Don't expect any more solid information until the last minute or so.

There will certainly be some place to serve as a jam warehouse, at least for one day before the show and maybe more. People will be coming from all over and learning each other's songs at the last minute, so this is kind of a necessity.

Everybody probably knows about this already, but if any of you cats are poor like me and concerned about lodging, apparently Hostelling International-Boston is well-regarded, though private rooms are costly. Maybe a half-dozen of us can go for it and that way we'll still be bunking in the same room as weirdos, but at least it's weirdos we know.

I'll probably be doing this if my friend Stu doesn't come and we can't crash at his buddies' place.

This place kinda sux, but if one is in dire need of a place, this one provides all instruments and such, is kept clean and all, but costs $30/hour or 8 Hours: $200. In a professional band I play in, we usually use this space for a few hours before recording or before hitting the road. It's more geared toward pro working bands:

But, um, they don't allow alcohol. I know of a couple other buildings in Allston that are more normal rehearsal complexes, but that would entail someone using their personal rehearsal space, if someone had a space at all (I don't).

I am seriously thinking about making the trip up to Boston for this, and if I do so, I'll be glad to play drums for anyone in need. If I were to attempt to do a short set, I know I'd need tons of help....

Oh, just thought I'd say 'I'm in.'

I won't be able to bring as much gear as I did to Austin, though. Sorry.And no booze, for sure. And I likely won't be bringing a Hoblit, either.

By then I'll likely have (to JB's delight) an electric mandolin, so that whole thing will be easier.

As I said in my PM to White Hat, stueym(my Dad) and I will be driving up. We have a big SUV, but we'll probably have some guitars and our luggage and whatever in the back. So we can probably take 1-3 people, depending on how friendly you wanna get with instruments or another SFer. But yeah, we'll probably be able to take some people.

A new idea:

It is hard to tell at this point just how many people are gonna show up for this, but it would not surprise me if there are more performers than at Austin. And if so, it might start to get tight in terms of time. I guess we can cut into set times, or make each show longer, but here is a third idea which I would like to get y'all's opinions on:

Songfight coffeehouse: Add a third set on Saturday afternoon, say, noon to three, or so. Instead of a normal set, folks can choose to do an all-acoustic set at this point. Maybe at the same venue, maybe a nearby coffee-shop-style place. You'd be limited to an acoustic guitar or two, some random hand percussion, if lucky a piano, and that'd pretty much be it. On the bright side, there'd be no downtime between sets, and not too many people performing, so maybe that makes for some longer sets. Maybe for people who either weren't planning to perform at all, or those who are doing a set at one of the other two shows, some of them could even do a song or two between the main performers.

After the show there's a good amount of break time before Saturday night's concert so we all have time to get dinner or whatever. Probably a few hours at least.

We can still plan to do this no matter what: if there's time enough for everyone to play nice long sets in the evenings then a few folks could do second sets unplugged. My main concern, though, is that there won't be enough time for everyone, so this is an outlet to get more people on stage for longer.

So what do y'all think of this? And is anyone interested in being part of this show, if it happens, instead of one of the night concerts?

Most of my songs(many of which I never end up recording :() start out just me and a guitar, so doing a little accoustic set would be fine for me.

And if I did play at the 'actual' showthingie, then I don't have many songs anyway, so my set'd be short either way. Unless I write and record and enter a lot of songs between now and August. Which... eh, is probably unlikely.

I'll go with anything though :)
