I know I'm very late to the party here, but I just heard "Code Monkey" by Jonathan Coulton and really enjoyed it. I had not really checked out his stuff much yet in spite of all the good things I'd heard about him.

Turntable into phono ins of a receiver, outs to my Phillips CD recorder (one of those ones that uses the "audio" CDs, but still working great after ten years), CD into the tray on the computer and converted to MP3 files from there.

Someday I will have money again and by then they'll have a turntable with a little laser instead of a needle that won't tear up the LPs every time you play them, and I'll get that. That will also spin the records at 4x speed so that you're not required to do this in real time. I understand that they do now have turntables that plug into a USB port (and are presumably correctly EQ'd for that) for as little as $100 or so. Haven't tried those.

Anyway, I'm doing it manually and figuring that anything I want to hear again I'd better do now... I actually had an old JVC turntable that I was going to use at the start of this process, but it decided to get stuck at about 38 rpm, so I had to borrow this other one.

"Sellin' Cookies" by The Booty Chesterfield Trio. It'll wear you out, in a good way. Several SF! songs re-done and much improved than the originals, plus some great new tunes. High energy bawls out rock!

Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! I have one simple request. And that is to have turntables with frickin' laser beams attached to their heads!!!

I never even considered Disturbed as a band I could enjoy, but I just watched this video, and I might have to pick up an album.

HaHa!! I had to copy and paste that. I'm not quite that clever.
But yes, they are one of my Friday night after work bands.

I mentioned this in the past. Their first cd was engineered and produced by the guy that recorded our first cd. Johnny K from studio K, before he got recognition. His studio is out on an a peninsula in Long Beach California. In fact, Rabz corrected me and thought I meant Naples island, but his studio is actually on a peninsula, but you have to go over a bridge to get there, so I thought it was an island.

Do you like Saliva? Another one of my Friday night after work bands. Southern metal kicks ass! http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=pxo3OnekPg8

Proof of Youth - The Go! Team
I've been listening to a lot of Dragonette, The Ting Tings and CSS lately. The Go! Team kind of tops them all.

Tori Amos - From the Choirgirl Hotel

I had forgotten how awesome this album was: all the creativity of Boys for Pele with lush guitars and way more focus than the meandering Scarlet's Walk or the pedestrian The Beekeeper. She gets back to this rockin' vibe with American Doll Posse - some.

Just bought ...

Matchbox Twenty: Exile on Mainstream
Metallica: Ride the Lightning
Nine Inch Nails: With Teeth

Until today, I was a virgin to all these bands, and I'm quite impressed by all these cds so far. (though the MT cd is a greatest hits type album ... which I don't normally buy)

After a few months when I largely stopped following new music, I just acquired a bunch of new-ish releases, most of which I'm enjoying a great deal. The best of the bunch:

TV on the Radio - Dear Science. Their sound is much more accessible now, and yet somehow without losing any of their complexity.

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue. Her sound is so pure that it shines. "Carpetbaggers," the duet with Elvis Costello, stands out.

Jack's Mannequin - The Glass Passenger. I really liked Jack's Mannequin's first album, Everything in Transit. This isn't as consistent, but the highlights hit harder, like the closer, "Caves."

You ain't seen nothin' yet. With Teeth is NIN's weakest album (and yes, pretty damn rockin').

If you like what you hear, download the latest album for free: The Slip

Then go out and grab the Broken EP and The Downward Spiral.

Because I love the youtube button:

1,000,000 from The Slip

To be honest, The Slip was the first NIN that I heard, and it almost turned me off the band. I guess I was expecting something totally different.

That aside, I listened to some stuff from The Downward Spiral, and I'm liking it. A lot.

I'd totally forgotten how good that album was as a cohesive _album_. It was just re-released on vinyl the other week (yay for records), and I was compelled to buy it at my local record store. I played it to death when it came out, and hadn't listened to it for like... ten years. It's held up amazingly well for being like 15 years old.

Pretenders - Break Up The Concrete. Radical? Nope. As classic as the early stuff? Nah. Solid and consistent all the way through? Yep. Lean production with few overdubs and a back to basics vibe, Jim Keltner's tasteful drumming. And that great voice is front and center, alternately snarling and whispering in your ear. Good stuff.

I really like this CD. It's so apple pie American in the best way. Chrissie really took this album in a new direction.....or should I say, old direction? This CD really rekindled my love of the Pretenders. Boots Of Chinese Plastic is great. But honestly, I like every song on Break Up the Concrete. She just never quits, does she?

She's one of the all-time greats. Yeah, I dig the entire album as well.
