We flew to Switzerland with an 8 month old. The flight was HELL! Non-stop screaming (on an over-night), but the water in the bathroom distracted him occassionally. Bob The Builder would have helped. Or Elmo, or something animated like that.

But that was the ONLY bad trip we've ever had. The other son also flew at 8 months. They have since flown to Europe 4 times, Florida 2 times, Dominican Republic 2 times, California 3 times. They're 4 and 6 years old now. We bring lots of books, mellow toys, munchies.

We tried to break them in early and set expectations that travel is a way of life. The world is begging us to discover it. San Francisco is coming next month, then two weeks later to Colorado to ski. We're working on Hawaii for this summer. Take the kid!

Laura flew from Hong Kong to Seattle one month after her second birthday. She has been back three times. We are going again next week. That is one long flight, and has never been a problem.

I agree with the previous suggestions. Bring things to do. That is key. And they must be varied if it is a long flight. Also snacks. Laura usually makes it through the whole flight fine but crashes (well, not literally - falls asleep, you know) during the last hour or two, and wakes up grumpy. The hardest part is getting her off of the plane.

BTW, the portable DVD player is great for getting her through band practice, also, especially in combination with headphones. She though the LCD glasses were a bit much, though.

Also, watch out for gravity.

Thanks all for the experiences - thats encouraging. Young Harri has already flown about a dozen times - but only short trips to Sydney or Cairns (1 hr and 2.5hrs). Though 2 weeks ago our plane sucked in a fruit bat and was grounded at Carins - so our 2.5 hour flight also included a 6 hour wait at the airport.

And I hired an onboard DVD player last week coming home from Cairns - and yes, it did work a treat.

I am attending a wedding that day too (being a best man I can't really opt out) and was hoping to accompany Mr $ across the pond.

At the risk of being annoying: BUMP! Any official confirmation yet on the date? I'm busy one weekend in August, but eager to attend this year.

i'm actually working on a new venue for this, and with a little luck, hope to close the deal this week.

hopefully, i can resolve this within a week.

Yes - what's the word on a date for this. Things are starting to swing back in favour of me taking a holiday in California in August this year - so I'm starting to shape up as a definite possible starter.

I may even bring Tex Beaumont with me - he's keen to check out some Californian vineyards.

ok, i just got off the phone with the very nice woman who books shows at the cayuga vault in lovely santa cruz, california and she is holding the 18th and 19th of august open for.......
