I haven't done my reviews for this title yet, but the first thing I noticed and have been enjoying is the writing on your song this week. I love cleverly worded lines that draw me a picture. I have a bunch of Hell Yeahs songs in my ipod and I find myself randomly repeating lines out loud because of how they roll of the tongue, like, "I was mix'n up a highball, punch'n out the drywall" great line.
I'm glad you mentioned your "Outside Paradise" song. I knew this weeks song felt like it came from something else, but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Your Outside Paradise song drew me a Thelma and Louise type picture, but the lines in that song are classic, ie: "Tell her what kind of bucks we'll be make'n, learned her up on the switch and the bait'n", that line is burned in my brain.

Anywho, here's your review. Good Job.

Wow! Thanks BLT! It's weird to think that you have Hell Yeahs tunes on your iPod too! We had a really good time writing the lyrics to this song. We stayed up til 4 am making sure each line was perfect! (in our opinion)

Waitresses

Post by MATA »

Heather,

My reference to the waitresses was due to the same effect mentioned a few comments back by PACO DEL STINKO: the whole song doesn't sound like them, but something at the beginning made me think of them.

Very enjoyable!

OK the 2nd half:

Klownhole- Big sound , big voice, riff is a little obvious, good stuff.

Masterhyde- Smooth. I really wish there was a melodic chorus. This is nice and groovy, serves well for background music, but doesn't really grab my attention.

MC Eric B- Muppet 80's power ballad, lo-fi and sad. I think if the vocals were serious I would hate this. If the production value was top notch I'd also hate it. Something about this combination of wrongness is endearing. I'm enjoying this , but don't tell anybody.

Melvin- Freak Yeah! This is motorscooting mutually funded awesome! This is the track that grabs my attention even when I'm in the other room playing Taluva. VOTE. Just fantastic all the way around. Great singing, great production , composition, great playing. I just love it!

Mico Saudad- This is pleasant, the 2nd verse drags a big as a G and G track, but maybe that sets the stage for the building vocal finally. I absolutely love the ending.

Phil's 1st Tambourine- Mercifully short.

PiGPEN- I eat Canibals, feed on animals etc. The rap is terrible. I like the 60's psychadelic riffs. Not enough to save the song however.

Ross Durand- There's a whole lot to love about this track. Recording and performance is fantastic. The lyrics really bug me. The content is fine, I just hate when words are lobbed up for the spike of the rhyme. I think the chorus would be stronger without a rhyme, especially since it's more of a refrain than a chorus. Kickin solo (s). Overall great song, sorry to whine.

Saint Cale- Nice guitar tones! Lovely voice! Good production. The song doesn't do much for me, but everything sounds so good I don't mind listening.

Sael Riley- Love the intro. I love the voice, I hate the ping-pong vocal reverb effect. Great melody. This is so New Wave. I'm keeping this tune, but I might delete it if I can't get used to that damn ping pong thing, which is especially annoying in the headphone-iPod world. Great song! Well done!

Shoehorntc- I hate the drum machine. I can barely hear the bass, more BASS! Nice singing, nicce harmonies. Some good guitar noises going on, the acoustics don't sound very good to me, good playing though. This reminds me of the Doves with low production value. This is too long for what it is. Not bad.

Shot Pounder- Kick drum abuse, cool vocals, too drunk to play a solo solo is kinda cool. Piano intro is brilliant, I wish it made a return somehow. The production sounds like you're the band down the hall at Downtown Rehearsals.

Signboy- I don't like the story telling sing talk, but I really dig the riff. That melodic part where it changes up is awesome. I think this needs more stuff, I like the bits that are there so far.

Superteen- This is annoying.

So I already said I voted for Melvin. the other gems for me were: Carpetburn, Dan-O from Five-O, Closest Dark Vepun Ind., Jeremy Bornstein, the Hell Yeahs and Shael Riley.
Phillipso, Older Brothers, Semolina Pilchards, Zipline , Thank Glennny for the Frisbee, The Odoriferous Valley, The Worldly Self Assurance, Berkeley Social Scene, Very Gentle Knives, Daddy Bop Swing Set, GUNS, The Kraken Lives, Cavedwellers

Nope, not an SG! I mostly play a Les Paul, unless I need me some wiggle or neck single coil, then I use my strat.

(also, if anybody listened to "Sincerity Machine," each chunk of "boodle a doodle" was played on a different guitar, but through the same honkin' amp)

Phil and I do consider this our best song so far, so to have so many say it wasn't was a surprise. .
In my opinion, best Hell Yeahs songs:
Outside Paradise
Piece of My Heat
Hold This For Me
In The Ditch

I agree with general opinion, that this one is OK, but far from your best. Music meanders a bit and lacks your usual punch. Story too complicated - I lost interest. However, it is probably one of the best vocal performances I have heard from Heather.

Wow, Glennny, I didn't expect a review like that. I honestly expected DJ Big Willie's opinion to be the unanimous vote.

As for Dan-O, I've never listened to any Devo, except for "Do the Swiffer", and that wasn't on purpose.

Mr. Redmon - Thanks for the peek into your guitar closet. You'd think as an LP and Strat player I'd be able to recognize either or both. I like that switcher-oo on the amp bit, too. Thanks again fer answering.

First off, I'd like to point out that Paco Del Stinko played bass on my "Couldn't Have Been Worse" entry this week. Thank you Debasser Del Stinko, you are a scholar and a genitalman.

Damn, some great songs this week. There are so many, I thought I'd never finish.

5900-N5 - Spoon, you somehow always manage to suck me into your crazy world. This is the first time I've heard you use your voice in one of your mixes, or was that some other guys voice? When I get the time, I want to do some insane grungy/electronica song with you after I learn a few more recording tricks.

The Anchors - You guys remind me of a young Velvet Underground. I know you guys are young, because you mentioned one of the guys in this band is only 14. I hope you stick with this style of music, because most guys your age are trying to relive Green Day and other pop punk which is getting tiresome already. I really like this song, GREAT JOB guys! Keep up the good work, I look forward to more just like this.

The BeWells - What an incredibly beautiful song. The band is tight, wonderful guitar work, wonderful vocals and harmonies. This sounds so Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young because of the vocal harmonies. I love it. Great job.

Caravan Ray - This song is my favorite of the mellow songs this week. This is a well written song with real life issues at hand, so it grabbed hold of me. Musically it's well arranged, well played and well mixed. This song actually inspired me to write my Gray Rainbow song, that's how much it stuck in my head. Great Job Ray!

Carpetburn - At first I thought that I accidentally clicked on a Melvin song by mistake until the vocals started. I like this song. You keep the bass and guitar right on the same notes for punch and drive, I like that style. I like this song. Good Job.

c hack - I've listened to this song late, after I had been drinking, and I sing along to it, over and over. I don't know the words, but I sing along pretty good.

Closest Dark Vepun ind. - I love Steve's brass. Good job on the Bond vibe you were stretching for. I like it when a guy wants to create a certain vibe and pulls it off without sounding like a bad copy. Your voice is great. I really enjoy listening to a British accent for some reason. Maybe because British singers had an early influence on me. Great secret agent story. Great job guys!

Dangerous Croutons - I thought this was going to be the good guitar player crouton. I would have liked lyrics posted to see if this had some deeper meaning. Sounds good though.

The Darkest Daves - I'm the odd one that never got into Depeche Mode. Yeah yeah, I know, blasphemy, but it was all electronica and sounded the same. But I do like this song, actually quite a bit. You got my full attention when you added in your lyrics post, "Dedicated to the dead girl who lives under our house. No, really" HaHa, that's all I needed to read to get me to tune in. But this is really a good song and put together really well. You're going to have to teach me how to do that spooky vocal effect you do at the end where it's breaking up, great effect. Good job.

DJ Big Fanny - Cool sounds, why'd it cut off the last word?

DooRite + Rankenstein - Cool synth sounds. Funny lyrics.......but his DOG??

Eddie Lance - This one is mildly interesting. The long piano parts indicate the waiting really well, but most kids can't stay quiet that long. But I picture the kids quietly squatting behind the bushes picking their noses and looking at bugs and such. So you did manage to make me use my imagination.

Fine Tuvan Dining - Uke and and vocals. Nice harmonies and effects. Very simple and cool. A didjerydoo would have added a nice effect too. Cool.

Flvxxvm Forvm - Old Greatful Dead vibe on this one. I like it! That heavy trebley guitar fits perfect. Cool lyrics too, just like the good old days. This song makes me want to go spark up a bowl. Cool song.

The Hell Yeahs - OK, I know I said this before, but I really like the writing in this song, as well as other Hell Yeahs tunes. The lyrics are clever, descriptive and trashy, for lack of a better word. I can't help but feel like I'm in a Quentin Tarantino movie every time I hear you guys. I gotsta tell you, you guys are learn'n me a new way of thinking about song word'n. Thanks for the inspiration, and great work. By the way, I'm writing this after the voting results have been posted, and I think you guys got robbed by yet another friend flooder. By the way, was that a volume pedal or a volume knob bringing up the volume for each note on the intro guitar, or just an FX pedal? I like it.

Hoosier Daddy - This is a really good song. Well played, good vocals and well mixed, plus my slow hand style of guitar playing, nice. I really like this one.

Klownhole - I'm off to pango pango, where bull dogs all wear pants! This is my favorite in the hard rock'n category this week. I've been playing the shyt out of it. If anyone need a good work out song, this is it. Plus it's a great drinking and sex song too. Great job you guys, you rocked my balls off this week. What ever you did on the final production this time really worked well, keep up the good work. Thank you for staying true to your style.

Masterhyde - I always enjoy your smooth sound. Do you know anyone that plays jazz guitar? Maybe you can collaborate with someone here at the SF.Good job.

MC Eric B - I like your new keyboard work. I can tell you're going to take this to new heights. You're a good writer Eric. You have a good lyrical style. You're vocals need some work, but you already know that. Mine do too. Just keep plucking away at it until you find your zone. Everyone has a zone out there somewhere. Maybe you can find an Elton John to go with your Bernie Tobin, unless you're bent on being in the spotlight. ;)

Melvin - That intro guitar ROCKS! The solo sound ROCKS! I miss doing heavy guitar distortion and feedback. Interesting timing in the verses, clever, I love it. I also like that you write about more than superficial issues. You seem to use a tried and tested formula of song writing to bring all of the right elements together for a complete song. Why reinvent the wheel if the wheel works so well, right? Great job.

mico saudad - Very nice. Good vocals, good guitar playing. You do that thing I like on the end of your vocals that I can never remember what the professional name of it is, lol, but I really like it. That drawn out last syllable with the varied pitch thingy. I need to practice that, I love it. Maybe you can give me some tips.

Phil's First Tambourine - Shweet! I can't wait untill Phil gets his first Tuba. ..........by the way, it could be worse. :P

PiGPEN - Good work, but it sounds really gay. If that's what you were going for, then good job. Cool sound though regardless. Very simple and straight forward. Is this straight edge?

Ross Durand - The intro sounds like Tenacious D at first, but quickly heads into a really awesome direction. I've been playing this song a lot all week. It has all of the right elements, great story, great vocals, great guitar work, nice groove. In my mellow song picks for this week, you and Caravan Ray were my personal favorites. Your chorus sounded a little like standard Dire Straights to me, which is great, because I love DS. Great job Ross, you are an amazing musician.

Saint Cale - Another beautiful song of the Dire Straights vibe. I really like this song and you have a beautiful voice. The tremolo guitar is great, the distorted guitar is a perfect compliment to the tremolo guitar. Well performed, well mixed, Good job.

Shael Riley - Nice keys, nice up beat song, nice melody, good vocals. I love the chorus. This song makes me want to strip down to my BVDs and sing into a hairbrush.
Friend flooding (getting your friends to come vote for you just to boost your vote count) is shunned upon here. Your new, so you haven't had time to learn that Song Fight here really means Song Patty Cakes. Not 36 votes good, but good. I hope to hear more from you in the future that actually is written for the given title.

ShoehornTC - Nice guitar, cool melody, nice harmonies. I enjoy the dream vocal sound. It has a relaxing vibe. Good job.

ShotPounder - I LOVE this song! This is the stuff we did years ago under the band name Circle Of Influence. When people think of punk, they think Sex Pistols, or mainstream pop punk like Nirvana. Not many knew there was this whole underground punk scene going on. We weren't anarchists, but we'd be happy to participate. We weren't full of angst, but we went to their parties because they have the best drugs and depressed girls are easy. We didn't even hate our parents, but we were more than happy to steal their car. We just liked to party, fight and have a good time. I think that's why I've been playing the f**k out of this song all week. It brings back great memories. Are you from the old school, or are you young guys bringing it back around? Keep me posted even if you don't enter the fights here. Good job.

signboy - Interesting video game background. The verse vocal delivery reminds me of Primus. The lyrics are pretty good, haha, I like this just because the shit your saying is funny and interesting. Ummm...flip it, cut it, poke it in the eye? hahaha!

Superteen - HaHaHa, sorry, but this song is so funny and sad at the same time. Did you look around your room for the names that would have been better then Superteen? I'm drawn into this song for some damn reason. When I first heard it, I was just scanning through to hear all the entries, but this song came on my ipod a couple days later and I had my hands full, so I had to listen all the way through, and much to my chagrin, it's oddly entertaining. Where are you from? I'm thinking of that Kevin Bacon movie, "the air up here" for some reason. For only having a casio and a mic, pretty good job.

Unfortunately, our entry for Gray Rainbow doesn't sound as good. We were late so we just submitted a rough take. I added some reverb to the vox and submitted it. So Gray Rainbow will be the closest representation to what we sound like live.

Maybe there's a reason the lyrics weren't posted :)

Bill'y Little Trip - You wrote "Maybe you can find an Elton John to go with your Bernie Tobin, unless you're bent on being in the spotlight. "

Actually, his last name is spelled "Taupin", which is somewhat the point. He is probably one of the most famous songwriters ever (who is not also a singer), and the vast majority of music listeners have still never heard of him. Also, unlike Bernie, I write both the lyrics and the music for my songs. On his songs, Elton writes the music.

So, I have 3 choices:
1. I can write both the lyrics and music, and have a good singer perform it. The songs may go on to become massive hits (on Songfight), but I will hardly get any of the credit since nobody ever remembers who wrote and arranged the song.

2. I can sing my own songs, but my singing sucks so it is unlikely I will ever win.

3. I could just give up. No, this is not something I plan to do, but if I did not pre-emptively add this choice, somebody else would probably post it as a suggestion.

As you suggested, #1 (having somebody else sing) would be the prudent choice. But, for now I am trying option #2, with the hopes that I might keep improving. I have only been writing songs for 9 months, and the constructive comments from Songfighters (like Billy's Little Trip) help me out a lot to try to make the next song better. I am sure eventually I will also try some collaborations with other Songfighters.

Thank you for correcting that. Poor Bernie can't even get his name spelled right by idiots like me that reference him. I was going to look it up, but damn, the reviews were so long on this one and I type with one finger.
But I think you are right to keep at it, because you can only get better. As I said, you'll find your range.
