SF Live 2011: New York City (June 11-12)

Update:

I still haven't found a new spot for the Sunday show. I have sent out booking inquiries to Crash Mansion & Public Assembly. I await replies. I do feel confideent we can find some place, so I ask the question of which night would you more want to play on? The SpaceonWhite show is the more lowkey show. I have a feeling it'll be a very fubu affair (For Us By Us) while whatever venue we get for the Sunday show will be the one with a larger audience and thus a perfect place for the live fight.

Speaking of SpaceonWhite, the donations have helped to completely pay off the space for the show. Now there are a few things we need to figure out for that show. We have about 200 bucks (plus whatever I throw in) for the drums. Should I pick up a junior kit or go on Craigslist and pick up a used full size. Either way, we need to pick up something because a lot of these venues do not include cymbals or have partial kits. I have no knowledge for drums so I need advice. Another question for the SpaceonWhite show is a PA. Where do we get one? Again, not my field of expertise so I don't know exactly what we need.

As long as the weather is good, Sunday afternoon will be a picnic and jam on Governors island. Bring some food or drink, acoustic instruments, and let's do some Songfight covers.

I had planned to ask to play at Sidewalk so pencil me in for whatever Sunday venue is procured.

I was hoping for Sidewalk as well. Out of karmic debt I should go on immediately after Frankie so that after he has a great set the place clears out and I have only three people in the audience.

As far as drums go, I think the following is enough, if a bit minimalistic: (incidentally, this is what the cheap kiddie kits seem to come with)

- kick drum (of course)
- snare
- low or floor tom (having all three is best of course)
- hihat
- one cymbal (ride, splash, or crash, in order of descending preference for me)

Anything else is gravy.

I'd prefer to play at the Saturday show; my Sunday travel plans are still up in the air.

My set will be loud and fast - I'll play at whichever venue is more appropriate for that. However, all other things being equal, I have a slight preference for Sunday.

I hope to have an electric band, but would also prefer Sunday. Either way, though.

Also would like an early slot, as my wife and kids will be taking part on at least two songs.

though it pains me to miss the free coheed & cambria show in brooklyn this night, ill play at the white space saturday show. my set is gonna be relatively low key, with no other instruments but me singing and playing guitar.

ill be playing drums for a few people and i agree with fluffys list, only i would put a crash above a ride... or better yet a crash/ride. Ride cymbals sound like crap when you use them in a fill like a crash... crashes on the other hand, can be played softly, or on the bell to sound more like a ride. just my opinion.

I don't really have one. But since that I'm aiming for a full-band, amped-loud set, perhaps Sunday would be best.

A speaker and an amp (with a power cable for the amp, and a cable to connect the amp to the speaker) and at least a mic with a cable and a stand, and probably more mics, cables, and stands, and in an ideal world, probably two speakers, and and maybe even a monitor speaker or two, with the necessary cables. A 4-channel mixer/amp would probably be good enough.

I think minimally, you'll need a powered mixer and 2 speaker cabs. And a stage monitor or 2 so singers can hear themselves. And some XLR cables for the mics.

I've had this PA powered mixer for about 15 years, and this baby is a true workhorse. It's even been to Burning Man for the past 10 straight years or so and it's still going strong. And it's portable, 6 channels, and has (2) 300 watt amps, so you can use one to power the cabs and one for the stage monitors.

$325 is a great price for this. I think we paid about $600 new.

I looked on Google and craigslist and PA rentals are expensive, about $300 per day. For that much, you could buy this and then sell it after the show and get all or more of your money back. Of course, you'll still need a couple speaker cabs to go with it. But that ebay link is a store in NYC, so it's logistically feasible.

EDIT: Check out the return policy for this on ebay (bottom of page). You can return it for a 25% restocking fee. 25% of $325 is about $70. So you could in theory, buy it and return it after the show and the rental would be about $70.

That was part of why I suggested not too long ago that you consider making Saturday night an unplugged night, no drums, no PA. It is in fact a lot of stuff, and you have to find it, pay for it, transport it, set it up, tear it down, etc. If you can find a new place for both nights that has a PA, that would be great, but as roymond said, that seems like a tall order on four weeks notice. At this point top priority should be finding a new venue for Sunday night. Without a venue, we don't really have a "concert" we just have some folks hanging out. PA/drums/new venue for Saturday should all be secondary to new venue for Sunday. If we have venues, and nothing else, we can make do. Once we have venues, next priority is making sure we have a PA of some kind for both nights, even if it's just one mic, stand, cable, mixer/amp/speaker.
