Oh, sure. It definitely wasn't my first listen to Consolers of the Lonely. Just happened to be what I was listening to last week, and felt like writing about it. Haven't heard the Dead Weather stuff yet; is it good?Eric Y. wrote:Jon Eric you are way behind the times.

I say "behind the times" though, because last week they released the new album from his new band, Dead Weather.
What are you listening to right now?

Bought it for the wife as soon as I located a copy (most record stores around town -- that are in walking distance of my work and/or bus stop -- were sold out or didn't have it when I checked), but I've only heard it once, myself. Will get back to you on this.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
You know, usually when I hear Melvin being compared so matter-of-factly to Weezer, I don't really get it.
But then I heard Weezer's new single on the radio, and I swear I thought Melvin had finally landed a deal with the majors.
Weird/sexist music video aside... I haven't liked a Weezer song this much since I was in high school. Must be that Butch Walker production job. Fun stuff.
I also noticed their MGMT/Lady Gaga mashup. That's pretty cool, too.

The Micachu & the Shapes album, 'Jewellery'. Got it when it came out, didn't think much of it on speakers, happened to listen to it on headphones - road to damascus moment. either the production is too subtle (or just plain bad) but talk about transformation! Stunningly bonkers.

Apparently it's Cornelius' music, but Deez makes some great videos.

Re: What are you listening to right now?
I just picked up some new non-Songfight music for the first time in months.
Mumford and Sons - Sigh no More - Only about halfway through it, but it's really great. I'd recommend it to fans of Ross Durand or Josh Woodward. Heavier emphasis on the folk, less on the rock. Great, lush harmonies. Good use of folk instruments (banjo, mandolin, guitars). Nice phrasing. Beautiful songs. Check out the lead single: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLJf9qJHR3E
Spoon - Transference - Excellent, as expected. It seems Spoon can do no wrong, and even when their songs threaten to veer off their grooves (like "Written in Reverse"), they keep their cool. For somewhat self-evident reasons, it's even more impressive to see a target being hit when the arrow is coming from what seems like an awkward angle. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLHF5VxcEmg
Crash Kings - Crash Kings - Haven't started in on this one, yet, but I'd heard about a third of the album on the radio and Youtube anyway. These guys made a name for themselves at SXSW. Drums, bass, and electric clavinet. The lead singer is a wizard on the keys. There's a lotta soul here, but he's got a way of screaming out his vocal delivery in tune that makes me jealous. Plus, he's got a good ear for phrasing his melodies. Who needs guitars, anyway? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcTlbi-dCjI
Bonus: Crash Kings promotional video with some really impressive keying (when the camera isn't too busy looking at the effing drummer...

That new STP single is stuck in my head, and I am magically transported back to 1993. In fact, they directly rip off "Stay Away" by Nirvana for the bridge... Kinda looking forward to hearing the whole album.

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by the new STP as well. Probably not going to pay money for that, though.Märk wrote:That new STP single is stuck in my head, and I am magically transported back to 1993. The new song "in between the lines" doesn't even sound like Scott Weiland singing.

Mumford & Sons seem to be flavour of the month in Aus at the moment. Little Lion Man came in No. 1 in the Triple J Top 100 for last year. They seem OK, but to my old eyes very much just a poor mans Weddings, Parties, Anything (Australian folk/rock band of the 1980s)Generic wrote: Mumford and Sons - Sigh no More - Only about halfway through it, but it's really great. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be much WPA on UTube - just some dodgy recordings of recent performances.
This is good though. A song from their 1989 album The Big Don't Argue - the greatest true-story cannibalism ballad ever:

A Tale They Won't Believe
EDIT: Watching that song again - if W.P.A were in Nur Ein, they would have totally won Round Zero by renaming that song "Time To Panic". It's got the counting and fits the title perfectly.

I've been sampling a lot of the bands on Band Camp, a really cool net label.
Ben Walker is a little Flight of the Conchords, a little Jim Tyrrell and a little Josh Woodward.
