HeuristicsInc wrote:niv, you overloaded the mic a bunch of times, so you might want to re-do the vocal, and also i feel like it could use some sparse percussion, but it's enjoyable.

Overloaded the mic?? As in clipped?? Please clarify.

As for the percussion thing...I'm a drum idiot so I have no clue how I would add percussion on this one.

um, yeah, like you were singing too close to it, is what it sounded like on my monitors. when you got loudest, the speaker had a clippy sound.

Hmmm, it didn't sound clipped to me. Hmmm. But I did want to redo it again anyway to play with the delivery. Expect another version coming soon.

Well, it's more than one song, and none of them are new, but I have collected together some of my punk songs from the last year, as File Under Uneasy Listening. There is also a stream.

These are all indentical versions of the mp3s that can be found elsewhere, but i've tidied up the tags and done a pretty front & back cover.

"The Day of the Devil."

I spent all afternoon on this after thinking about Ann Coulter and Bill O'Reilley a lot and worshipping Nick Cave. Here are the lyrics.

The name of the devil on the children's lips
The antichrist bouncing on a mother's hip
The war chief's goblet when he takes a sip.
A little crack in the side going drip drip drip.

The words are running down the wall.
The blood is the water in the waterfall.
Black tar crucifix seals your lungs.
Brings you back to where your father's feet swung.
News radio blaring through his skull.
Resonating still when his blood won't flow.

What if there's a hell and it takes me in.
Laps me up when I meet my end.
Never see my mother and father again.
Never feel your hair on my chest again.
News radio blaring on again.
World blowing up in response to sin.

Give women guns and don't let them vote.
Says the stupid cunt on the radio.
Bad skin spin doctors suck up hope.
Got papa wide-eyed lookin' for a rope.
Couldn't find one so he broke the glass.
Coulda fought off the devil with the bones of the ass.
Stead he stuck an edge and pulled across his throat.
Spilled his tears out of his neck like a goat.

Let me out let me out let me, etc.

Luke,

Very good song. It really falls apart at the end though. Keep it tight and it'll be a great tune especially live.

Chris,

Prometheus & I is a neat song. I like the piano sample. But why the band name change? (There are at least 2 other bands with that name that I know of)

Luke Henley's "Heal"

Been listening to a lot of Townes van Zandt. Here are lyrics:

I weren't born, but thrown to life
They said, "pick his bones, his sins are rife."
Now I may not be worth a damn.
But I try to be a goodly man.

I know a girl who drives me crazy.
Reached through the fire and the smoke so hazy.
We shrug our clothes off in the water.
Was baptized in the youngest daughter

Chorus:
Healing light hadn't ever shined on me.
Even when I used to kneel and pray up to the trinity.
So darling if you'd like to dance with me.
I'll hold you close and drag you down.

They think I'm broke, I don't wanna fix it.
Just want rum and Barq's to mix it.
Got an asshole but no opinions.
I pick fights with no plan to win 'em.

Church man said I am a warrior.
He said, "son, I've nothing for ya."
But I never touched the hilt of a sword.
Except to cut to the center of the gourd.

Chorus

Shake the sugar off the gumdrops.
Fill the glass with Barley and Hops.
If it breaks, just fill another,
but drink to me, your fallen brother.

Chorus

This is a song I did tonight. It's basically about all the people on songfight who critisize my style of vocals. Hope you enjoy it. The song is called Breakin' Da Rulez

Lyrics:

You can't/ Do that/ It's just not done here
You are/ A rebel/ No one will ever listen
Sing it/ Bring it/ You can't just speak it

No flair/ Who cares/ It's not inspiring
What do/ You know/ About being entertaining
Too bland/ Not a fan/ You should just quit now

Breakin' Da Rulez/ That's me
Speakin' Da Words/ That's me

They hate/ On me/ But it doesn't matter
I'm here/ To stay/ Speakin' is always my way

I'm Breakin' Da Rulez you can't tell me how to sing
I'll keep on bringing it until you find me worthy
This is my style it's who I am and who I'll always be
Singing is for sirens and rapping for thugs but this is me
If you don't like it that's not tough for me only for you
I'm Breakin' Da Rulez you can't tell me how to sing[/u]

Not so much new songs, but I recently got some mp3s of a show I did in June(Bands For Belize). There's quite a bit of talking inbetween, 'cause hey, what better way to pad your set than talking a bunch?

1. I'll Be Right Behind You Josephine (Josh Woodward Cover)
2. Don't You
3. Method of Delivery
4. Three Lions (Lightning Seeds Cover)
5. Better Man (Robbie Williams Cover)
6. Baby One More Time (Britney Spears Cover)

I think that Don't You, Method of Delivery, and Baby One More Time are the best, personally.

...aha, no really. erm, what to say....
1) I know you like hiphop and stuff but you always sing about yourself. get a new subject. I guess you set your stall out pretty clearly though, and I'm not big on self-referencing.
2) The music (and this could apply to most things you've submitted - I don't know why I'm saying it again); it's more like beat poetry with sound FX than music. seriously, I don't know how you manage to create so much music that is totally devoid of things like rhythm, melody, and other basic concepts. That sounds really harsh reading it back but that's what your songs are (with the exception of Don't You). I'd not normally say this but I still think you've got a lot to learn technique-wise; if you wanna be good at what you do then imitation is the best way to master the basics. It doesn't sound good to say it, but Van Gogh, Beethoven, all great artists learnt their trade through imitation and then developed it themselves. Obviously you don't really want to do that, but as Lenin once said sometimes you've got to take a step back so you can leap forward more vigorously. you dig?

good luck.

good job Luke. I'm gonna listen to some Townes when I get home, I think I'm mising a reference point :)

You're going to have to be fairer than that! That's exactly what I said. Rone was like No it's YOUR opinion I don't have melody and it's YOUR opinion I don't have rhythm FUCK YOU I'M EXPERIMENTAL.

Yeah but he wasn't an ass about it. And he didn't go to 10 different topics to trash me. Thanks Pedro.

Thats really cool advice FP, mind if I hi-jack it? do you think it would be a good idea to imitate your influences, or start with imitation of globally acknowleged maestro's, I'd tend to go with self-influences...

But yeah take some time out and practise what you do really hard, I've got one or two projects to complete then that's what I reckon I'm gonna do... anybody got a spare voice box they don't want...

It's all yours. don't believe I figured that stuff out for myself
as for what to imitate - whatever you love. Just don't forget to take it further (or in another direction) when you're ready!

I can't wait for the day when Rone drops a fresh slice of hotness on us (possibly with a guest vocalist  )

So I borrowed a keyboard from my friend, and I really wish I had my own now. I threw together a few keyboard based songs the other day, since I was inspired to do them. You can comment on them, but I won't be able to read the reviews for a long time since I'm leaving to work at a camp for a lot of weeks. I might get a chance to come on the boards somewhere in there, but not necessarily. I probably won't even be doing mroe songs until September, and maybe not even then, since I have to get a job to pay for my new equipment. Whatever happens though, I'm posting the songs, and if you want to review, go ahead.
