My two cents:

I feel like some out there are overthinking this. The directions were to pick four songs we like that we would like to hear covered. Some songs we love, we wouldn't like to hear covered because of our affection for the original in some way, others, we'd like to hear covered.

Besides the overthinking, there seems to be some measure of "distrust" or "underestimation" of the potential coverers. I for one feel like the spirit in which this was offered is "throw it out there and see what comes back." Klownhole doing "cuts like a knife" would be very entertaining, I think.

Anything you get back is a gift, after all - why look it in the mouth before it is even offered?

How fucking cynical is that to try and criticize people's motives for picking certain songs? If you're all going to be such fucking sobby bitches about this shit and analyze every twist and turn, why the fuck would you do it? It's like "Hey, what do you want for Christmas?" "Man, I really just want that new 2-disc set of whatever-the-fuck-album-DVD-whatever." "Man, you're just trying to show off to me." Or, the alternative, "Man, that album/movie/whatever sucks ass." Either way you're not fucking getting what it's about and you're being fucking annoying.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could always get what you want?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone was considerate of others?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone liked all the same things?
Wouldn't it be wonderful if life was fair?

All this bickering is totally sucking the fun out of this. IMHO you ALL have some valid points, but GOM is what it is - kinda like life... just try to enjoy it.

Exactly. I plan on doing whatever song I get, my way. That's actually the best gift you can give.

Oh yeah, true. I was not of sound mind last night.
Every Christmas we have big family get togethers where we exchange presents. Last year, it was at our place. The presents were given out, and I was sitting next to my Grandmother. We were unwrapping our gifts, and I got to my Grandmothers present. Before i get to unwrap it, she looks across at me and says "Oh, thats for both of you (myself and legs). Its a doorstop".

I just kind of stared at my Grandmother, and my brother had to stifle a laugh.

It was indeed a doorstop.
Good one Grandma.

So... what I'm really saying is: all the bickering...it reminds me of Xmas! Boy I can't wait!

FYI I'm forecasting that whatever list I get, the song will be re-invented. Unless it's Bob Dylan, because he's easy. :) So if I happen to get a 10 minute opus... let's just say, there's nothing like a progressive acoustic folk rock instrumental with David Lee Roth singing like Bob Dylan. oh baby!

The GoM is one of the most enjoyable things for me at SF. And being an old man cover band guy, it sort of plays to my strengths, I guess. Anyway, if anyone is in need of assistance on their GoM song, I'm happy to pitch in.

Same Great List! Now with 400% more links!

Animal Collective - Did You See the Words?
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
My Bloody Valentine - When You Sleep
the Crystals - He's a Rebel

Or.. maybe? For whatever bizarre reason, if I put these URLs into my browser manually then they function just fine, but following the links always fails. Hopefully I'm the only one experiencing this (my computer does some odd things from time to time) - if not, try copying and pasting the URL. Sorry!

Oh absolutely. How terrible that would be. Too bad there are no other songs in the world to choose from.

Stop being such a whiny brat and just pick four songs already.
Maybe you should stop being such a frankie bum face and cover "Sixteen Going On Seventeen" already.
Put it on your list and we'll see what happens.

Yes! They performed this when i went and saw them a couple of weekends ago. Rocked it hard. Nothing like I Sucked A Lot Of Cock To Get Where I Am to grind hips with hot nerd-girl strangers.

Pretty sure I've doomed myself to getting billy's little trip's list at this point. And backed myself into asshole corner for all sorts of other reasons. But at any rate I've been goaded into it.

I. Roy Orbison - In Dreams
II. Rodgers and Hammerstein - Sixteen Going On Seventeen (but only do it if you can get two different people to sing the parts, because if it's good enough I'll put it alongside the others at the Rolf Is a Nazi page)
III. Tullycraft - Glitter and Twang
IV. Wilco - More Like the Moon
