I could use some advice from New Yorkers... I was planning on driving into the city, but now I'm reconsidering. My hotel in Jersey City (Westin) is real close to the PATH station. Our practice space is real close to Penn Station. There's metro near the park and I think near the evening venue. It may be easier to take public transportation. Opinions? How long would it take to get from Newport to Penn on Sunday morning? Also a consideration is the confusion of NYC subways vs. the crazy drivers

Thanks for any advices...

There is a great supermarket on 6th Avenue between Bleecker and Houston. It's got everything!
That is about all I can help you with though sorry. I have only been a New Yorker for a few hours.

The PATH is gonna be a little crazy on Sunday morning. Over at WTC, they will be doing an emergency (read- in case of attack) drill. That drill is lasting until about 11AM.
NYC weather is crap right now but forecasters are predicting it'll clear by showtime. Cross ya fingers.

hmm, bad timing. are they actually using the path for the drill? if not i may be ok... our practice space starts at 11 so i should be past there by then. i'm guessing i might want to be getting on around 10?

Just in case anyone cares, because I haven't seen any more talk about it, but I am definitely going to bring a big fraction of drum kit, which any us of can use if it turns out we need it.

Yes, they are practicing for a bomb attack in the tunnel. What fun!
"...emergency officials will be conducting a drill that will suspend service on the PATH train at the World Trade Center station. More than 800 first responders are expected to take part, and as a result the station will be shut down between 6 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
It's expected to simulate an explosion in the tunnel between the station and New Jersey."

So far so gloomy in NY but heading out now to meet Bill and then onto Prospect Park. mere meterology will not defeat me (not when lack of musical talent can do that all by itself!)
We're rehearsing to 12.30-1 ish and will then head down. Subway permitting should be there round 1.30

For those who are in the park, if you can get to the carousel, there is a path that leads down through a tunnel and then down to the pagoda. Ask the park rangers for help or give me a call. My # is on my facebook.

Hey everyone,
Much excitement on the train! Apparently, another train "struck a trespasser" resulting in a 1/2-hour delay. Then, later, another 1/2-hour delay for "track work" and I am finally home. Nice meeting and re-meeting all of you and I'm sorry I couldn't stay longer!

Well I made it home safely!
Minor detour en route though. 3 doors from my apartment, there is a bar and there was a bluegrass band playing "Muleskinner Blues". They were awesome!
I HEART NY!!

As always, I love putting faces to names. It was good to see everyone from Wayne, PA again, and I'm glad to have met the rest of you. As FBF said, I'm sorry I couldn't stay any longer than I did.
Alas, my train ride was completely normal and uneventful.

I had a great time at the show (as anyone who's my facebook friend probably knows as I gave a twitter-esque rundown of the show as it was going on). I have CDs of the night show (thanks to BenK) and I'll be listening to them and posting the songs this evening.
