I used to like Korn and Limp Bizkit when I was a teenager, I haven't listened to any of their albums in many many years, but I'll admit that George Michael cover by Limp Bizkit was a guilty pleasure of mine lol

The Pannacotta Army: Nylon strings and whistles, here we go. I Fought the Law? Is that the song I'm thinking of? Maybe a little Born to Run? This is gonna kill me. Anyway, cut a lot of mids on that nylon string guitar. That might solve some of the mix issues. More oomph in the vocals. The backing vocal style feels too doo-wop. The drop chorus at the end was the best chorus. Cut the bridge altogether, do the drop chorus, and repeat with a final big chorus. Also prefer the clean guitar to the fuzzface. A lot of good pieces here, need work tying it all together.

You seem to know a lot of technical stuff regarding the recording process, or want us to believe you do. I figure it’s the former.
Yes, I record all together since I just don’t like the disjointed feeling of all the separate takes. Been there and had some other people doing all that. Very boring , to me anyway.
Sometimes I do a live take, just for fun, and submit that. So, yeah, sometimes I do play at dives...fun, actually.
The pan stuff I kinda learned on this site. Someone once suggested to not have everything in the middle. Makes sense.
The amped acoustic is a new Takamine my sweet wife gifted me a few weeks ago. Before, I used an Ovation with an aftermarket pickup. Someone suggested I use a mic for the guitar once before so, that will be tried on my next entry.
Now for the timing.....I know but, I have an excuse....I’m a drummer first and that’s it. I beat on the guitar like it’s a drum and when I do not use a click track, I speed up...a lot.
But you know, sometimes I want to do that to actually make the song go where it should, imho.
All in all, thanks for the review. I’ll certainly think about your suggestions. Not sure I’m smart enough to use that info, but I’ll give it a shot.

I haven't been around much lately; forgive me for not knowing your background. My notes do tend to focus on technical and performance aspects of recording (versus lyrics, musicality, etc.), but I understand that not everyone here has the same goals as me. Please keep doing what you're doing! If you pick up a few tricks, that's great. There's nothing wrong with letting your guitar and voice alone tell a story - don't let a bedroom songwriter tell you your business.

Your wife got you an amazing gift! I've own a couple Takamines over the years, and played a lot of them when I lived in Japan. Beautiful guitars. Looking forward to hearing more of yours.

I’m not sure how you made all the different sounds in your tune but, I like them.

The Pannacotta Army - Great sing-a-long...esp. the whistle part.
I love the tune and just wish the lyrics were as upbeat. Even Peggy Lee ended the doom and gloom with...”let’s keep dancing.”
This is a really good song despite the message. In fact, most listeners don’t really understand or listen to the lyrics anyway, eg., “...there’s a bathroom on the right.”
Great music, vocals and sadly for me, not a vote. Thanks.

Sweeny Toad - WOW... the lyrics are so well written and delivered it doesn’t matter the sameness, monotonous or, even lack of musical notes. Absolutely, imho, the best lyrics of this fight. Not my genre, not my wheelhouse, not my anything but,I do recognize a word man when I hear it (see it). Definitely a vote.

Brown Word and the Big Whine - Firstly, great instrumental solo spot. Enjoyable song. Lyrics actually push the song. Didn’t have to drag out much to get to the good parts. All good.
Again, not exactly my cup of tea but, kept me engaged throughout. Maybe a vote...maybe.

The Gross Tones - Very interesting. I believe the ding-dong thingy may be a little off key on some notes. I have one I used once and did notice a lack of descent sharps. I like the guitar harshness vs. the ding-dong.
As for the lyrics...you’re right, but don’t go tooting your own horn. Sayin’

Glennny - Right from the get-go, had me tapping my foot and rocking my head. Thoroughly enjoyed this!!
Please forgive my thoughts of The T-Bones meet Herman’s Hermits. ( Once shared a plane with the Hermits from Indy to Minnie. Didn’t know who they were at first. They were wearing ripped jeans and black leather ala the Ramones. Actually, nice guys but the lead guitar was definitely afraid of flying ... big time. His groupy, or whatever, held his hands the whole trip...both of ‘em... But, I digress...

I never expect to win any fight, for the record. I'm doing this purely because I enjoy it and to get better.

I bought a new violin bow a couple of weeks ago. It hasn't arrived yet, but I finally felt like I could use my old violin bow on my guitar and not be too worried about destroying it, so the was of sound is three layers of bowed chords on the guitar. I chucked a capo on and alternated between a g shape and an em shape, with some slight variation in one of the layers. I EQed all those differently and added a little reverb to get it sounding a bit more mythical.

The other two instruments are a tiny bit of midi piano, and a randomised midi trumpet that involved me just randomly pushing the keys on the midi keyboard lightly with my whole hands. I know that won't be everyones cup of tea, but I liked how much it reminded me of the swans back home.

The Pannacotta Army: Sounds great right off the bat. Digging the whole vibe and sound and loving the whistle. I like the organ or pennywhistle sound in the second verse. Really nice instrumentation changes there, it mixes things up nicely. That trumpet-y synth sound or whatever in the bridge is not my favorite. Only thing I don't like though. VOTE!

Phlebia: This one's also got a really cool vibe and style. It's really repetitive but sets a great mood and keeps things interesting with the vocals. I like the vocal echo freakout part a lot. The bass and drums feel so driving that I can just zone out and let it all wash over me. VOTE!

Pigfarmer Jr: Solid song. I think the melody and instrumentation are good, the arrangement is good. For me I feel like there are a couple things that would take your songs to the next level for me. One would be getting all the vocal pitches on the spot. The other would be getting your drums to sound bigger and beefier. The guitars sound good. The bass is kind of non-distinct in the mix, like it could be tighter and punchier. Anyway. I don't love the long instrumental outro.

Pork Producer Jr: Same core feedback about this one. This really needs a bass guitar part (I don't think there is one at all?) to tie together the music and the drums. I think I like this song more than the other one though. It's pretty. I think the guitar playing is really good and the acoustic guitars sounds great, and the instrumentation choices are really good. I like the synths and keys.

shrts: Alright, that's what i mean by big beefy drums! The guitars rock. Wait, that's it?!?! Not even a minute? What a tease!

I didn't get my bass.. erm, I didn't get both of my bass guitars back until this past Friday. They were in the shop getting set up. I shall probably have more bass in the future.

Pork Producer: There's a low organ that's serving as my bass in this one. Either it doesn't work (as a bass) or it was mixed too low.

Appreciate it <3 and yeah, that's a Gretsch square neck. Maddeningly difficult instrument for someone with shitty rhythm and pitch.

Wholeheartedly agree with the harmony note. I did the same thing on my last entry two years ago - left out some much-needed harmony parts. Will be mindful to include in future. Thanks for the notes!

Things I really like: the half time beat. The guitar tone, that ascending organ riff. The skippy triplets. The general psychedelic vibe. The melody doesn’t really stick with me but if there’s one thing in my music tastes that’s generally constant it’s that I rarely care too much about that. If this song were a color it would be forest green. It floats along vibing pleasantly and like so many of your tracks I’m a fan.

Berkeley Social Scene: 5/4 time wee. The drums are a bit low in the mix compared to the bass, a minor tiff. I enjoy the chord progression in the chorus. There’s this keyboard tone that I really enjoy after the first run through the chorus. I dig all of the nature imagery in the lyrics. The solo for some reason feels like it launches really abruptly, even though I like it -- it kind of feels tacked on? But I enjoy the rest of the song enough to not really care. Maybe it’s just where it’s mixed really high that it bothers me. Trailing synth note at the end is very Yoshimi.

Brown Word and the Big Whine: Bassline is groovy. But muddy. Turn up the drums. EQ the bass. I like the general rhythm of this a lot. I like the change when the “no one ever sees the mystical creature” part comes in. Story is compelling. For some reason it seems like a Mighty Boosh episode. But maybe it’s cause it reminds me of the Hitcher. But it’s bigfoot. Is that Spongebob samples? The cool breakdown is neat. Kind of wish the song ended after the “oohhhhhh” part.

Far North Daylight: I kind of like the generally spoken word vibe of this. Standing in circles in fun. I think that might be my favorite shape. Triangles are cool. I want this to grip me more than it does. There’s parts where it sounds like you’re almost singing and almost talking, but the melody in those parts would work better if it was a little bit better defined. But then again that might kill the vibe. I like that kind of dinky synth horn. I kind of wish this built more. The most exciting thing that happens is the synth horn.

Glennny: At first I got to trying to follow this as a linear story, and then I stopped and began to appreciate it for what it was a series of vignettes! I like the swung bounce. The chord changes in the bridge are nice. And I like what you did with that instrumental break, though I’m not entirely sure the synth works for me. I mean it’s not bad but I think I would have liked more guitar. And one verse didn’t make the lyrics page! The ending is interesting, ending on a different key than you started on.

The Gross Tones: I like this more than the past few gross tones songs. I’m glad I’m not the only person who used glockenspiel in their song this week. Some aspects of it are kind of blues travelerish. I kind of like the whammy bar guitar solo, but it doesn’t really mesh with the glockenspiel. This needs more whammy bar. I dunno. I like your drummer.

Hostess Mostess: Cool chord progression. I like the optional challenge being bet in the main vocal line. The restraint in the drums is a big plus -- less is really more some times. The vocal harmonies that are introduced sound great when they first come in. There’s some pitchiness in that cool bridge before the “put your hands down!” bit where you say something about monsters that I can’t quite make out. This has some intense 70s yacht rock vibes. But that’s a good thing. I like Bread.

Hot Pink Halo: As I’ve said on more than one occasion, I like your more artsy songs, and the honking horns as an audio representation for the swans is kind of neat. Honk! Every time there’s a little honk I grin a little bit. The background music sounds a little bit like something I’d hear in a guided relaxation video. Honk. Squeak. Honk! Keep with your artsy fartsy songs I like them the most! Swans are cooler than geese.

James Owens: One criticism that I’ve seen leveled at your stuff is that it sounds kind of dramatic. But it does. I just like that aspect of it, it’s refreshing because most people here don’t write songs this...solemn. I like all of the dangerous mythical creatures. And I also usually love 6/8 time. I don’t wanna hang out with that tribe, they don’t sound a whole lot of fun. My wife says you remind her of Bob Seger. I’m not familiar enough with Bob Seger to tell you whether or not I agree.

Paco del Stinko: The most extreme example of quarter notes in the fight. So many quarter notes. You don’t sound like Jonathan Davis to me. Not tortured enough during the whispered parts. Your harmonies are on point as usual. I’m usually impressed by your command of harmonies and chord progressions. This song is pretty good. Nice transition into the ripping guitar solo, as short lived as it is. I kind of wish it was longer. My wife says “this is the best one so far!”. For what it’s worth she’s been in the room with me since Far North Daylight.

The Pannacotta Army: I don’t know if you meant to do this but this vocal rhythm sounds a LOT like Livin’ La Vida Loca. Something something black cats and voodoo dolls, mystical creature. Are you as sexy as Ricky Martin? You’d better be. Okay the rest of the song doesn’t sound like that, but the wife and I both thought it. I read through Antichrist and Uebermensch once. Neither of them brought me any closer to happiness but they were interesting.I hope your protagonist succeeded in their request for happiness. This is well done, though it doesn’t quite do it for me.

Has anyone else here read the book “Momo” by Michael Ende? It’s damn good. I wrote a song about the grey men. Cause they’re mythical creatures who steal your time and smoke it in cigars.
Pigfarmer Jr: Hmm, the guitar riffs sound pretty good. While I too wish Trump would shut the fuck up, something about hearing it spelled out that directly in song lyrics just doesn’t really work for me. Too on the nose I guess? I like my political anger in songs to be more hidden! The riff at the 2:20 mark is really good. I just want it to rip into something way more HARDxCORE than we get! But I do dig that riff.

Pork Producer Jr: Oh hey, it’s you again! I like this song a lot more than the Pigfarmer one. Is there a conceptual difference between these monikers, or is it just how you differentiate between multiple entries in a fight? Anyway, I think half of my enjoyment of this one comes from that cool synth line. And the chorus of this one is really strong!

shrts: RAWK. This is giving both the wife and I Weezer vibes. I actually really enjoy this. But as soon as it starts it’s over! Come on, give me another verse or something. You’re the king(s) of super short songs that just about get going. Except sometimes they do get going and then I really end up digging them!

Sober: Not twangy enough! I don’t know why but I think it’s growing up in Appalachia where I hear music like this without a super thick hillbilly accent. (Wife says “Come visit my hometown in southwest Virginia and hang out for awhile, it’ll rub off on you really quick!”) Anyway, enough of that. This song is really good and your voice is good and your picking is deftly executed. I actually really enjoy this song, my nitpicking is entirely in just and I don’t have anything bad to say about this.

Sweeney Toad: My wife says the sung part reminds her of this one guy Jack Hartmann who does kids videos on YouTube. Only I don’t think he ever writes songs about Adderall and siphoning gas outside of Texaco. Your flow is really good as usual, and you’ve got this particular style of evoking completely ridiculous imagery that I like. I still wanna do something with you at some point...I’ll just have to find time to make it happen!

Tim Hinkle: My son (who enters as “Seaweed Delete” on here) says “it’s too loud but I like it!”. Continuing with my theme of comparing songs on here to various children’s media I’ve found, you have the right voice and songwriting style to write tunes for some kind of educational kid’s show set 500 years ago featuring animated knights. The fact that that’s what came to mind without paying attention to the lyrics -- which effectively are that, a timeless reading rainbow esque vibe, means you did a damn good job.

toby roktot: Something about this chord progression sounds like a bunch of songs I’ve heard before. The chorus of this is really well. I like the “sheeeee’s a mystery” melody. The build up at the end of the second verse with the making love under the moon also builds pretty well. If it were me I’d have mixed your vocals a little bit louder, but all in all this is a pretty decent song. The “talk for awhile bit” is a nice transition and sits in the mix pretty well. The “but I don’t know, yeahh” seems a bit abrupt?

WreckdoM: These lyrics are completely ridiculous. But this is WreckdoM, that’s pretty standard. I like that spazzy horn that comes in periodically. I’m curious about how the canary felt about that. This is a peppy little number. It’s weird hearing the word opossum pronounced with the “o”. Usually I just hear “possum” and not a whole lot else. This was short and memorable. Great joeroeoeorb.

wreckdom - i just realized your name is like rectum, lol. i used to have a funny stage name very similar to that, but it was mc wreckshin. get it? lol we're like brothers from another mother. your song was short and i liked it, i still get that beat happening vibe from you, i really like your weirdo lo fi indie rock style.

pancotta army - cool intro, this song sounds like something beavis and butthead would hate and would just relentlessly make fun of you for being a hippie or something. i like it though. i like the whistling even though you clearly jacked it from a whistle sample library. lol jk. this song did offend me though because i am a very religious person. lol jk again. i really did like this though! good job!

james owens - reminds me of a johnny cash song, not that you sound like him, but it just sounds like a song he'd make. i've only heard a few of your songs so far but this is my favorite one so for for sure. i love johnny cash and i really love this too. mermaids and sirens are cool too. i used to love that story by homer and it makes me think of that too. good job on this one man!

hot pink devil horns - a lot of cool intros this fight, same with this one. you really do super remind me of raincoats, do you ever listen to them? just curious. this song is a good follow up to the james owens song, they kind of compliment each other i think. i feel like this song needs to break into some really weird experimental break down about 2:30 in and then slow back down at the end. i felt like that was about to happen while listening but then it never did. still a pretty cool track though, i liked it a lot.

brown word big whine - another cool intro, great vocals, reminds me of early 90's riot grrl stuff. it's really cool that people are still making music like this. i could see you doing tour with bikini kill if weren't in the middle of an apocalypse. actually, bikini kill would probably do a tour in the middle of an apocalypse. make it happen guys. cool break down in the middle of the song there. good stuff guys!

berk soc scene - the chorus is so nice on this song, i like it a lot. i really like this fight because every song has really cool visual imagery, i'm not saying i like thinking about unicorns but i like thinking about unicorns, they're majestic you know? cool guitar solo, there's that chorus again, you guys are really good.

toby roktot - all i can think of is you performing this in a dive bar, i shouldn't have read the reviews first. he's right though, this just reminds me of something i'd hear while i'm waiting at the bar to get a beer. that's not a bad thing though, i like dive bars and the musicians that perform at them. drinking is so boring without music. this was pretty cool. i miss going to dive bars, i miss going outside.

pigfarmer jr - i love this intro riff. this reminds me of a theme song for a sitcom from the really early 90's. damn that solo is hot. but yeah overall i just picture this song being in a 90's tv show, like maybe the ben stiller show, probably a scene with janeane garofalo, rest in peace papa stiller!

paco - the intro has me in anticipation. you have a cool voice, somewhere between david bowie and pulp. i get a little rocky horror vibe too, this song is really freakin cool man. i love when it winds down and picks up again. another hot guitar solo. short but sweeeeet. i bet you would be really cool to see live. i really liked this a lot!

phlebia - makes me think of the movie desperado right away, like i could hear this playing in a scene where antonio banderas is having an epic gun fight in one of those shitty little dive bars in mexico. the vocals are getting trippy, i love this. reminds me of something i'd listen to on shrooms in my early 20's, after the song was over i'd probably be blown away that only 4 minutes went by. i don't really miss shrooms tbh. awesome song though!

grosstones - i like the little xylophone in this, i don't know if that's actually a xylophone but it kind of sounds like one. your singing also kind of reminds me neil young. i like the guitar solo breakdown with all the little xylophone chimes, it all sounds really nice together. good song!

far north daylight - i like the drum machine or the programmed beat or whatever. are you talking about a lord of the rings thing here? i like the little solo, what instrument is that? sounds like an organ i used to play in my grandmas house in the 80's, whatever it is i dug it at the end there.

shrts - yeah! yes! rock! see now this is a song that beavis and butthead would totally rock out too! just picture them head banging for the entire length of your song, that's my review of your song. no words, just them head banging.

sober - this reminds me of the kind of music the dashboard confessional guy started making after he got tired of being emo. i personally liked his emo stuff better. i could just never get into this style of music. this is well done though for sure, i definitely respect what you're doing here. please don't judge me for admitting to liking emo music, or do, idc lol

glennnny - i like the vocals a lot and the humming in the background, it's a happy little tune and i really dig it. i really like the break down solo that comes in at 1:55, what instrument even is that? it sounds so cool. i keep thinking this would make a cool music video with puppets dancing around, or maybe just you performing it on sesame street, that would work too. good work, rad tune!

tim hinkle - i like those fake claps. this is a good 80s jam, again, it's really cool that people are still making music like this. keep the dream alive, another cool solo at the end. beavis and butthead would hate it i think, but i like it. good song man! and good fight everyone!
