a music
Entertaining, but I think it might be better off with a different beat, perhaps more of a reggae beat or 1/4 note bass drum hits. Or a raging overdriven techno beat to make us think of crazy aliens. And more craziness on the guitars (make 'em louder too) and I think I'd like to hear some weird beeps and blips or strange language, to go with the alien vibe.

Andy Balham
The theme cracks me up. I like the production, the way the instruments sit in the mix, and the guitar tones. It's a nice choice of instrument for that little solo (the wurlitzer-sounding instrument) but the notes seem like they could be developed more. I like the vocal turn around for the "feeling of freedom never felt before".

Astrolamb
Being a guitar freak and all, I like the parts where the a cappela guitar and vocal are together, at 0:27. I like that you threw that break in for the contrast and diversity of the song as well. Reminds me of an old Black Sabbath tune, "the Wizard" I think it is. I like the stops near the end too. I hear a different vocal melody happening in the first verse. Really like how you combine the punk and blues styles.

Bell Green
Why was the pink skirt getting covered in dirt? A little romping on the ground without a picnic blanket? I hope so. The "chant" style is an interesting direction at first, it gets a little repetitive for me. I think that the vocal melody could easily go in other directions and vary, instead of following the same sort of ups and downs in circular fashion.

Caravan Ray
Really like the the driving beat and how it drops out and comes back in. The surf guitar is great too, would like to hear it come up more in the mix, and maybe more often, with a repetitive catchy lick. There's a bit of synth melody off to the right speaker at about 1:30 that opens the door to some really dark cop chase kinda music. I like that part, the melodies. I like the madness of the vocal. My what a crazy x-dressing party. Very fun, wild.

comfort
Took a while to get me into it, I agree with Deshead about adding more reverse reverb, would make for something really out of this world. It's a nice classical guitar line and Thom Yorke melody. This belongs on Kid A (Radiohead). A lot of potential for some gut pulling music, but not really getting much of a Pink Skirt vibe...not that I really know what I expect a Pink Skirt to sound like.

Dark Liberty
This made me want to smash my window last night when I was drunk. There's a whole new level of dissonence going on here. I think you've written a whole new genre. More muppet voices may be appropriate.

Gert
Greasy black iron frying pan that hasn't been washed for thirty years, cooking bacon and sausage every morning. Songfight can inspire really fun things to happen, the internet is just such an amazing communication tool.

Hillbilly
I like the vibe of this tune so much. I'd like to hear it mastered. I really like the simple, laid back summery feel. I could hear more slide guitar going on, your voice goes so well. Aside from some additional production, this tune really holds it's own. I like the two chords right before you say the title line, too. Good vocal phrasing all around.

Kamakura
Really like the sad longing melody, really catchy and melancholy, sinks right into my soul. "That colour would be Gold" and the "whatever you do MAKES my world" are great. Such catchy lines. Nice minor turn around back to the verse.

Ross Durand
I like the story telling quite a lot. and the line "cause she lived in black and white". And how you move back to the root chord kinda quicker than one might expect. I almost could've gone for a clarinet solo instead of slide guitar here or just some kind of really mellow sustaining instrument instead of the slide guitar which sounded kinda sharp. I dig the comparison of pink versus black and white. I also like that I sorta expected a big chorus to break out at the end, but it didn't.

Sell Crazy
I like the drums' drop out for the chorus. There are some little things that are detracting from the song, like that drum fill on the toms (I think it needs some cymbals with it or, just to happen in a different place). Also there are few rhythms that the guitars do during the chorus, those chords that go down, not sure if they're really necessary..kinda give it a jerky feel. The line with the word "forever" is actually a good melody I think, but the performance struggle takes away from the actual good melody going on there.

Steve Durand
Is there a tuba in there? Need to hear more tuba in your tracks. This reminds me of something from back in the day where anything above an ankle length skirt was considered "dirty" or inappropriate. Like the bit of burlesque it makes me think of, would like to hear more burlesque to give it more of a pink skirt conotation.

E-Views.

3 weeks ago I finished work to stay home with my baby for 5 months. I've had less time than ever for music and songfight. So it's with great pleasure that I sit down with one of Ontario's finest lagers, Creemore Springs, and together sort through the music you've all worked so hard on.

you did, right? worked hard on these? Please say yes...

a music
This is funny. This is creative. This is simple. This is a one listener.

Andy Balham
This kind of strikes me like a crossdressing bar's drunken theme song...at midnight all the "boys" are on stage belting this out. Glasses raised..the whole room is joining in.

That said..I didn't really dig it that much, but it's well played. Mix was pretty good, I could hear everything. Didn't really get my attention though.

Astrolamb
DeVo DeVo. I'd like the vocal guitar break if it was better sync'd up. Great idea though. I'd like to hear more synthy stuff in here and bit more edge. Not bad though. I bopped.

Bell Green
Nifty...kind of like late 50's space-pop/kitch with Zappa! This really reminds me of something..second time this fight. But I can't place it right now. Hmmm. Also a one listener.

Caravan Ray
Caravan re-inventing himself again! So which part of this was born of alcohol? Great guitar tones man. Great synth..too bad it disappears. This song is missing a nice thumpingmychest bass line. I like the dynamics of the track. Those are some nice break beat loops man. Or if you programmed that stuff, way well done. That is not easy stuff. This is an interesting hybrid of styles. I'm thinking it's a bit of a bunch of music and also some lyrics....I don't see an obvious connection. But I could be blinded by your crazy ear shattering filter ending.... Creative man. Creative.

Comfort
ooh...like the moody stuff at the beginning...mmm. This is really sweet. Reminds me of The Books. I couldn't really make out alot of what you were singing, so bummer there. Neat piece of atmosphere/connecting music for a film.

Dark Liberty
The pitched vox don't score you any points. Except to maybe seperate characters? clipping all over the place gets me down. Pretty not good all around actually. The song barely works musically to my tastes, and it's poorly recorded and played. I'm sure there's a place for this, but it's not on my playlist.

Gert
dirty greasy bastards. heh. ;P

Hillbilly
Echoing TT's direct acoustic feeling....doesn't do you any favours. I find it really bassy, and it's hard to here the articulation of your playing as a result. I like your vibe though. It works with your vocal well. I'd like a more intimate sound to your voice...a bit closer to the mic and of course very well controlled delivery would give me that 'right-next-to-you' feel. And of course and nice condensor on that acoustic..both slightly compressed...it would be a great feeling and sounding tune....but it needs a better ending. Did not like that.

Kamakura
Awesome! I'm glad you chose to submit Kamakura. I like the retro feel the hiss gives it. Nice chords. Nice voice for this type of music...bit Rod Stewart in there..nice. This is fantastic as a demo, and I for one would enjoy hearing the rerecorded, properattentionpaidtoproduction version...because it's screaming for that. Nice work... melancholy and it works for you. Nice selection of voicings for the various parts...possible vote.

Ros Durand
Ever heard "The Weight" by The Band? I think you have. :) Like the slide guitar, nice tone. The playing was a little shaky and pitchy though. The guitar left side is too quiet. Some of the vocals seem a bit rushed..I think you could have hung longer on some of those words. Mix is ok..kind of flat for my tastes..no sparkle, no rumble. The piano sound was really dull. I'm sorry that I cannot get The Weight out of my head. Your melody and chording are way similar to it. Not a bad song.

Sell Crazy
The drum roll every other line is a bit distracting, but quirky. Like the soloing. Not really digging this song, personal preferences only. Maybe if those toms were panned around a bit, it would be easier for me to listen to here. The hats seeem so isolated way out on the left side it's throwing my perception of the 'space' off. I don't mind the chorus...costello and xtc ish... it's catchy in some ways. This song works. Quirky summer song. The vocals need a bit more something...practice to eliminate little pitchy moments and work on mic technique...but otherwise not a bad tune at all. Oh, I didn't like the guitar sound...very boxy.

Steve Durand
Yah! Bring it. Nice horny horn. This sounds like it could be from any Ween record. And boy oh boy, nothing says, "Pink Skirt" to me more than a couple of horns jamming on the Casio CPS201 backbeat. Instrumentals don't really work for SF, imho. Too bad you didn't have time to try to connect the music to the title.

Good to be back after too long of a break. Thanks for the tunes all.

Special thank to Dre for the time saving review form that supplies the names and formatting to get your basic review rolling...sweet. For those of you who may not know where to find it, click here.

Hmmm - it actually had one! but when I played it in my car stereo it almost made the speakers crap themselves - so I cut it way back.

One of these days I might get the hang of this mixing stuff - gotta still keep lookin for that brown note.

Very enjoyable fight and here’s my ha’penneth’s worth:

a music
The music’s not that interesting, but I enjoyed the general whackiness. Not overly long for such nonsense either

Andy Balham (me)
Thanks to J$ for the backing vocals. Apologies for the slightly wayward vocals. I started to redo them, but couldn’t quite capture that original feel. I shall use Eb again. I only used it this time since Cm Blues in one of the two scales I can play on the keyboard.

Astrolamb
Oddly reminds me of The Dead Kennedys up to a point. Fun and short.

Bell Green
I like the experimentation. Reminds me that I should branch out a little myself. More interesting the first time than on subsequent listens. Good to hear your voice again.

Caravan Ray
Inspired chaos. The line “put some money down my pants” made me laugh out loud. Contender.

Comfort
Reminds me of Radiohead unplugged. Pleasant but never really grabs me. I like a dynamic in a song and this is too one-paced for me.

Dark Liberty
Not fond of the processed vocal. Some bits don’t seem to fit together too. Again there’s little change or surprise.

Gert
I prefer the verses to the chorus. They build nicely, but the denouement leaves me wanting. All very professionally done though.

Hillbilly
I like the laid back groove, maybe that’s the wine and hot weather talking. Sort of doesn’t really go anywhere though.

Kamakura
Glad you submitted it. Love the hiss ;) Fine rhyming and use of ‘synesthete’. I’ve always liked you voice, it has a wonderful vulnerability to it. The cheesy keys are top too. Another contender.

Ros Durand
I like the fact the lyric fixates on the colour aspect; I think it is a nice take. It’s all very well done and the overall feeling of familiarity works in its favour for me. I guess it beckons to my country leanings.

Sell Crazy
The verse is, perhaps deliberately, somewhat choppy. I really like the chorus and the overall garageband sound. The third contender.

Steve Durand
Two words that have been mentioned before. Benny and Hill.

Shall cogitate on my final vote, though Ray’s lunacy is leading the way at the moment…

It's NOT Benny Hill, though what it is is driving me crazy. I think it's from something like 'Doctor In The House' or 'Man About The House' or 'On The Busses' or... Help.

wait.

I'm confused. There are two Durands... Brothers?

Thanks. So far It's been compared to "Might Quinn," "Signs," and "The Weight." not bad company. I guess, however, that for some familiarity breeds contempt. I was going for a sort of contemporary country ballad type deal, but some how it came out more like classic southern rock ballad. Either way, I guess I accomplished the mainstream-sounding thing.

...so my buddy Mike who is in my band is hanging out as I review..so he's beaking in with his opinions... and I take no responsibiliy for his comments... he doesn' t have internet...pity him. This is not smalltown mike. I guess he's... smallisland mike or something...then Dana showed up for a few songs...

Sell Crazy:

MIKE: <stares blankly at screen>

LEAF: Reminds me of something...punky and...british.

MIKE: kinda reminds me of snfu.

LEAF: Not bad. Theh production is good. I don't mind this.

MIKE: The cheesy "Queen" bridge.

LEAF: Solo is not bad... The thing is, the song itself doesn't hook me. The drum part does a bit..mostly cause I 'm a drummer.

MIKE: I find the overall mix thin...

LEAF: I don't know if I've heard these guys before. It reminds me of new wave in highshcool.. uh...that falsetto bit... I dunno.. I like it, I wouldn't click next if it came up on shuffle... it's just not a stellar SONG. but I'm liking the band for the most part...so I'll keep listening for more stuff. You've probably done stuff here that I just havent' heard before...I think this is the first one of yours I've heard. I honestly think the drummer needs a LITTLE variety in the fills. The repeated roll is kinda cool...it's like a melody moment...but it gets a little thick...maybe sparser. Anyway, good, no vote.

MIKE: I dig some of the elements of this song..... but I think the execution is a bit weak. Good arrangment, and I like the dynamic between the drums and the guitar, but once again I think this could be a lot better with a thicker mix. And if you are going to sing high harmonies you need to NAIL them.

LEAF: Drum groove..I like.

ROSS DURAND:

LEAF: I honestly don't like this. Damn.

mike:< is amused.>

LEAF:Sorry man, but I just don't ... the playing is ok, the production is really good. The song doesn't do it for me. I've sat in enough sappy country clubs... and this .. . Sorry.

Mike: It's like I can't put a word on it.

LEAF: It's just total cheese. No vote.

STEVE DURAND:

LEAF: I like this way better. This is aweome elevator music. I'm not actually being sarcastic. I mean, if I was in an elevator, I would be quietly boppin along. ...uh...where are the lyrics? No matter... I don't mind that this is an instrumental...cause it's nice and short, fun and boppy.

MIKE:I feel like I'm walking down the street in a small midwestern town in the 50's and everyone is waving at me.

LEAF: I 'm at a shopping center... It's the fairview mall and these old dudes are groovin out in red vests.

MIKE: I am very happy.

DANA : It's a viagra commercial.

CARAVAN RAY:

LEAF: I checked this one out earlier... I kinda dug it.

MIKE: It's like Darude colliding with Rob Zombie...

DANA: I like this one...

MIKE: Yeah I like this too...reminds me of Rammestein too.

LEAF: <everyone starts groovin..chatting...enjoying>

MIKE : it's sex with a german dominatrix...(Leaf is typing for him,...thus the spelliing error....)

LEAF: Yeah. I like this. Now I know why you thought Gert wasn't your thing....cause yours is so good...yer all slutted out on your own tune... very good. Vote worthy. I really like the ending...

AMUSIC:
LEAF: It sounds neat. The recording sounds pretty good on these speakers...

MIKE: uuhhh.....I don't know what to make of this. Sort of interesting.

LEAF: What does this have to do with pink skirt.... ah... weird take on the lyrics. I don't really beleive it. eh... it's ok. But no vote.

Andy BAlham:

LEAF: I swear that guitar is out of tune... the production sounds good.

MIKE: Reminds me of "they might be giants"....

LEAF: you're into that whole "you sound like " kinda reveiwing eh?

MIKE: <snickers...>

LEAF: I dunno... I like this guy...but this tune isn't doing it for me.

MIKE: A little bit sedated...like Roy Orbision on qualuudes..

LEAF: have you even ever done "ludes" before man?

MIKE: heh heh... yes. It's a horrible drug.

ASTROLAMB:

LEAF: Johnny!!! (sings) you're....so....pretty.....PINK SKIRT!

MIKE: I like the singing and harmony line...

LEAF: It's goofy...but I like it. I want to swim. That sounds like smalltown mike doing the backups....

MIKE: strange...the two parts sound like two different songs...uh...not that that 's a bad thing, interestingly done...

LEAF: Would you vote for it?

MIKE: ...ehh...........no.

BELL GREEN:

LEAF: It's cream. very psychedlic rock sounding.

MIKE: shaking head.....I....I don't know.

LEAF: I like the 60's psycho vibe. some of the notes on the vocals are weak...they warble...

MIKE: I imagine steel drums in the background...

LEAF: you mean timpanii??

MIKE: Yes.

LEAF: lol... I thought you meant go all reggae!!

MIKE: hahahahahahaha....hehh...hehh.....no.

LEAF: it's alright.

COMFORT:

LEAF: I'm waiting for Vincent Price....

MIKE: It reminds me of "call of ktulu" by metallica

LEAF: after the cheesy intro...(sorry ....that was .... I was having images of Iron Maiden ....) then the guitar is pretty cool. The singing...is too loud. I 'm not diggin the singin.

MIKE: Very dreamy.

LEAF: Where is antonio banderas? I NEED ANTONIO.

MIKE: Like a .... <long pause> Like a silken clad woman riding a white horse through a mist filled forrest.

LEAF: Quite smokin that shit man. You're out there. fuck...

MIKE : I just didn't want to use another band analogy.

LEAF: There is no way this is about a pink skirt. It's kinda cool... it's weird. IT's creepy; I like creepy, but I would not vote for it.

DARK LIBERTY:

LEAF: no.

MIKE: Simply awful.

LEAF: I like the heavy guitar just cause it's heavy. ug...that transition... basically, no vote.

MIKE: drums speeding up and slowing down... guitar is dischordant...

LEAF: You sound really young... that is a bonus..

MIKE: ouch.

LEAF: NOT MY THINGATUDE.

HILLBILLY:

LEAF: the rhythm guitar is not doing it for me...but that little lead was sweet....

MIKE: I like this....

LEAF: The singing is good. The bass is good. is that a bass or ....seems like a bass. Or a octave pitch shifted electric guitar.... or not.

MIKE: It's true..the rhythm guitar could be a little more bright...

LEAF: and not so mufflly.Good song. Definitely one of the better ones.

MIKE: Yeah... I like that song...

KAMAKURA:

MIKE: I gotta gather it in for a second...

LEAF: I like it. Reminds me of a rock opera sentimental depressing moment...

MIKE: Yeah! David Bowie!!

LEAF: I'm thinking Phantom of the Rock Opera... or whatever that weird movie is called...

MIKE: Nice whiskey and cigarette blues voice.... for real.

LEAF: It's pretty good. See...good thing you did submit this one... cause it's a nice listen, and it's well recorded... and basically good.

MIKE: Yeah.

GERT:

LEAF: The Gert is satisfied.

MIKE: All hail the Gert.

LEAF: I really really dig this song. It's quite the compliment, (allthough it kinda reads dismissive...but whatever) when people say "sounds professional" cause we're not...we're six lads from liverquadrottawastontopool who met in a smokey internet message board one rainy winter day to forge a unit with style and ....

MIKE: This song is almost sickeningly catchy........ God damn I'm going to be humming this later....... and I have no internet!!! curse your horrible heroin like properties Gert!!!

LEAF: Really. I am amazed we did this. I spent two hours tryin to get something cool for the bridge... and the guitar playing...the bass...the keys..the lyci.s..lfdsajdsfa.dsagf. overload.

MIKE: heh heh heh....awww......done sucking your own dick man?

LEAF: gurgle.

James:

LEAF: I like this. It's pretty good. Nice story, nice voice, nice playing.

MIKE: Yeah. Very smooth delivery...didn't we hear this already.?

LEAF: I can't remember.

MIKE: heh heh heh.

THE VOTE:

LEAF: So...who would you vote for?

MIKE: hmmm....

LEAF: Gert is displeased.

If it was then this time at least it wasn't from lack of effort. I used the Pod's tuner before each set of takes after getting a pulled up on the subject by Blue on my last solo outing. It may well be my ropey old voice making the guitar sound bad.

Thanks for the review and from now on I shall bill myself as "like Roy Orbision on qualuudes".

Have you checked the intonation? That when the strings are in tune open that they're also in tune at the 12th fret.

Pink Skirt Reviews

Post by Bell Green »

Reviews from the Bell Green jury (just some geezer in South East London who hangs out with his cat). Who will get the douze points?

a music
Queer Aliens. Interesting spin on the title. Obviously quite friendly aliens. This sounds like a TV ad of some kind, maybe for a car or a soft drink. Some nice melodies. I would robotize the voice even more. Not bad.

Andy Balham
Your voice has improved since I last heard it. Sounds more relaxed, confident and a bit more powerful. Good mix, nice and open sounding. Drums good as always. Kinky. As in Ray Davies.

Astrolamb
Feargal Sharkey. Like where you have matched the vocal melody with guitar. I'm into that this week. Good voice. I think you have a bluesy voice. Ok.

Bell Green
Got in the shower, out popped a tune. That's what I heard, that's what I recorded. Where do they come from, eh?

Caravan Ray
Smack my bitch up. Love it. Great use of the filter. I would say make it even more aggressive sounding, grittier. Vocals could be a touch louder. Nice. Could easily listen again.

Comfort
If I were an A & R man I wouldn't have listened this far. Do like the radiohead style vocals, but can't understand any of it. Maybe it's just too avant garde for me. Hmmm. Dunno. Won't listen again.

Dark Liberty
Can't understand the vocals, so that puts me off immediately. But maybe that was intentional, I don't know to give it a goth sound or whatever. Hats are a bit too in yer face for me. Sounds like it's not really finished. Doesn't groove well and doesn't make me want to listen.

Gert
Rock on. Got that student garage band sound. Great drums. Very tight and well mixed. Vocals sound a bit lazy to me. Meaning that it sounds like the vocalist is capable of more power to fit the song, but can't be arsed this time round. Something lacking, some very small thing, which would shift it up a notch. Don't ask me what that is though.

Hillbilly
A bit on the quiet side. Nice laid back vocals. Mix let's this one down, and perhaps tightening up the rhythm a bit. I could listen to a whole album of this.

Kamakura
Your cassette sounds a lot cleaner and brighter some of the others, so glad you put it in. High cheese factor, but I like that. Sort of Rod Stewart meets Barry Manilow. Nice tune. I'm gonna listen again.

Ros Durand
Like the sparse arrangement. Vocals sound good and fit the style of the song. Well performed and recorded. Yeah, really good.

Sell Crazy
Sounds like the Clash or SLF. Cor that takes you back. Hats sounds a bit separate from the rest of the drum track. Good song. Good nostalgia value for me.

Steve Durand
Ooh, I'm grooving already. I'm still grooving in my chair. I can't stop. Try not grooving to that. I think a fruit pastille may be easier. Great horn playing. I'm sure it has something to do with a pink skirt somewhere.

Kamakura dix points, Caravan Ray douze points. Bon soir mes amis.
so . . . when was the last time you backed up?

Gert has enjoyed this fight.

Gert is satisfied.

Gert has a personality disorder.

Gert6 has enjoyed the work of Caravan Ray and Steve Durand among others.

Gert is also a verb.

Gert is shooting his chances of winning in his sixty-toed foot with each self-referential aside ....

I think all the Brits need to form their own swedish supergroup...and the Aussies.

A commonwealth of Swedish supergroups.

I look back at my reviews...and wonder if reviewing with friends whilst "hanging" out is neccessarily a good idea....

Standouts: Steve Durand, Kamakura and Caravan Ray. Really, quite a few entertaining pieces, and a few not so entertaining ones.

Gert appreciates the post-policing of J$. It's a tough job. Who better to do it than the self-crowned king of posting, where it isn't always quality...quantity will do just fine.

Gert is killing him/herself laughing. Gert realizes Gert might be alone in this.

The dirt that is Gert will never lose. Voting means nothing to Gert. Merely a sign of better things to come.

Gert's fine third person shenanigans remind me of Grumbleduke from Ducking Stool. I wonder what happened to them. Probably awaiting another witchy title.

Seriously. Losing just for having fun on the boards? That seems....bitter.

Let's lose for having a crappier song than others..not for politics.

**The opinions of Gert are not neccesarily the opinions of all of Gert.

Last night we had an on-line party... photos of us drinkin and stuff were swapped... pathetic and beautiful all at the same time... so. Bring it on. If you don't like the song, don't vote for it. But if you don't like the good time we're having... but LIKE the song...well.
