how much gain should I be using for a dynamic mic?
it's very different than dealing with the condenser mic.

i have my preamp set at about +15dB but then I have been cranking up the audio files another 7-8 in the software. i guess i should just crank the preamp to 23 or so?

this seems high, but i dont' really have anything to compare it to except the condenser.

Don't worry about the number, just worry about the sound. You will have to crank a dynamic more than a condenser.

23db is still pretty low gain, even for a dynamic. the older ribbons want ~90, which is why you have to have nice, low-noise pres for them.
