while we are talking about it, here's a link to the place we could have it...

http://www.riotheatre.com/

if you click the booking link and scroll down the page, you will see they have a performance space next door that they rent. this next door space would be perfect. and it's affordable. and it has WIFI access so maybe we really could do a real time stream next time....

like i said, i don't have a problem stepping up to organize this.
Dude that place is sweet....very nice location just got this aching that I don't want to wait til next Summer! Songfight! Winter Games anyone? ;-)

Anyway anytime would be wonderful for us to get together.

Umm yeah like the winter olympics or sumfing. When i saw the web address I thought it was called the Riot Theatre which would be a better name, but probably attract the wrong sort of crowd!

I really really want to make it out to this - if only for the potential of a Moelsen Twins live set (!) - but Santa Cruz (at the moment) seems a bastard to get to from UK (£950 return flight per person? Eep) Maybe there'll be deals nearer the time ...

J$ try flights to San Francisco. More direct international flights than connecting to get to San Jose or Santa Cruz. Sometimes you can get a deal hubbing into LAX and then connect to SFO/SJC. in there and then a little further to drive but not much. As we get closer I am sure we can do the rent Minvan's thing and get everyone to Santa Cruz that's flying in from far flung parts.

Also, Oakland whatever Airport, while a seething pit second only to Newark on the list of "US Airports Rabid Hates", is also one to target as an option, as it's in the general area.

And Sacramento too, for that matter, though it'll tack on a coupla-few extra hours of drive-time to get to youse to Santa Cruz.

And if anyone is phenomenally foolish enough to fly into Fresno Int'l, I suppose the Primitive Screwheads could help a 'fighter out, hitchhiker-style. But not only is the cost (to fly into FAT) prohibitive, you'd have to sit in a car with us for far too long, heh.

...as could Caravan Leaf.

Place is fairly irrelavant to me (though beachside sounds very cool - I had to look it up on a map - and close to San Fran. - I really liked SF when I went there years ago).

But the sooner a time is sorted, at least a 2 or 3 week window anyway - the more likely I'll be able to make an appearance

That would be fun...we'd just have to teach a band how to play all guitar and bass parts! I'd actually be up for it..but about the only part I could actually play and sing is that standard break part. But yeah, again...we could do it, especially with this much advanced notice...and it won't be too far for Glenn...maybe I could talk him into the guitar part or something.

Rachael and I WILL be there! We are not going to miss another yearly songfight live if I have anything to say about it.

And Yes, I will play for your whole set on the musical instrument of your choice. Just make sure you give me a lot of notice on what songs, so I can properly learn them.

ROCK!

hmmm.... 15 short tunes... 10 long ones. I'm assuming a set is the standard 40-45 minutes... right?

SFLive sets are usually more like 15-25 minutes. It is determined by an extremely complex equation, which looks like this:

Code: Select all

TIME_AVAILABLE / NUMBER_OF_BANDS + FUDGE_FACTOR
With this much advance planning it seems much more likely that we could make TIME_AVAILABLE a lot larger than in years past.

(FUDGE_FACTOR is a much more complex formula which depends on other peoples' sets being shorter, or them taking more time than they were allocated, and also setup/tear-down time, which for certain bands *cough*Octothorpe*cough* can get to be pretty big for various reasons *cough*can't find the lead singer*cough*.)

i'd say the set length is pretty correlated to the number of folks showing up. i've got no problems with booking the place for 2 days (friday and saturday or saturday and sunday for instance) if enough people committed to attending. also, i think it would be cool if folks considered how much they are playing with others and whether or not they really needed to do a solo set. for instance, should a santa cruz event happen, i would not probably play a solo set, but i would probably want to play a set with e money as brody. that would suffice for me. although, if the opportunity presents itself to do a bloody hams set, or a molsen twins set, i'd be very up for that.

food for thought. i'm easy.

Yeah, the multiband thing always leads to different ways of rationalizing things. Like, I'm sure a lot of people at SFLive Boston were all like 'WTF why do Loyalty Day and Ken's Super Duper Band and Stuff have separate sets? They're the same damn band!' when they're not really the same band at all. And now a very similar case could be made for fluffy porcupine vs. Octothorpe, what with the stage version of fluffy porcupine now essentially being Octothorpe minus Maddog and Crash, with whiny emo-rock instead of avant-industrial loungecore.

Spokane was cool, because I have a friend that lives near there = free place to crash.
Santa Cruz is cool because I grew up in San Jose/Cupertino, and we used to hit the beaches in Santa Cruz nearly every weekend during the summer = nostalgia :)
It's a long trip either way, but I'm going to do my best to make it to next year's SongFight! Live.

well, although ken and loyalty day i consider to be 2 pretty distinctly different songfight entities for many reasons, it could benefit the event to maybe just have ken's set absorbed into a loyalty day set for instance, to reduce the amount of setups/breakdowns and faciitate everyone that attends, maybe even with longer sets.

i'm not singling ken out here. it's just a good example.

more music. less breakdowns/setups.

Oh yeah, will there be an afternoon acoustic show like this year? Or is beach by day, SongFight! by night?

well, personally, i think the "acoustic" show should take place on pacific avenue. right in front of o'neills surf shop. we wouldn't even need a permit. hell, this is santa cruz. it goes on every night already. we are a busker friendly town. plus, songfighters could be "ringers" in the crowd, which would inevitably draw more attention from the street.

i'm completely serious. :)
