I'm not planning to be in this coverfight, but if anybody has a specific song (of their own) they'd like to hear a KA hxaro of, PM me, and I'll see what I can do. Chances are better if it's a song from a fight I was _not_ in, and also if it's something that actually sounds like something I might do...

Hey All,

I'll be taking on "Covermaster Pro Tem" duties for this in a few weeks. Please spread the word as I will be making pretty short deadlines to keep things moving. Let's say signups start September 1st, when I will start a new thread. The deadline will be two weeks later to say you are in and then a week after that to submit your list of requests. Then perhaps the deadline will be the end of the month. We'll see. You must include everyone in that list, even if the same song is listed for each. I will make a master list based on whatever mystic voodoo I choose to utilize. Then perhaps the deadline will be the end of the month. We'll see.

Okay?

As and when we have to say yes.... then yes!
though I'm not sure yes to what, is this covering other songfighters songs?
or would it be more general covers... or.... I'm not making sense am I??

Yes, you would cover another songfighter's songfight song. Read the first post in the thread.

I'd lke to join this if it doesn't scare anyone off. Are the songs to be self hosted? I don't have a site although I've been flirting with the idea of a vanity type site. Would the songs be submitted to SF "officially"? Thanks!

It seems like, if we wind up with 40 people in this coverfight, that having to go through and identify which of my songs I would like each of 40 people to cover is going to be a lot of work just getting this thing started.

If we still want to preserve a bit of the mystery, but still have fighters suggest which song they would like to have covered, maybe we could do something like this:

- once all the names are in, covermaster chooses who will cover who, but keeps it a secret

- covermaster sends a list of five songfighters to each participant, and says "one of these five people will be covering you..." Participants identify which of their songs they would like each of those five people to cover. Or better yet, chooses two or three of their own songs for each cover-er, so that the cover-ers have some options... the "four additional songfighters" for this part of the process could probably be assigned by a moderately clever perl program...

- Covermaster then goes back and notifies the cover-er (and only CM knows who that is at this point) of who they are actually covering, and what song(s) the cover-ee suggested for the cover-er to do. CM could also pass on the other suggested song info, so at this point I might get an email that says:

You have been assigned to cover Jack Shite, who suggested "Mission Accomplished" or "Shreds." This is your assignment.

Your name also appeared on the list sent to the BeWells, who suggested that you cover "All Tan" or "Pasty White Man" - this is optional.

Your name also appeared on the list sent to MC Frontalot, who suggested that you cover "Gonna Be Your Man" or "Bad Cat" - this is optional.

etc. etc. etc.

This is a bit more complicated for Covermaster, but saves a lot of work for the coverees - for me to figure out which song(s) of mine I would want 30 or 40 different people to cover is going to be a lot of work, if all I'm getting out of it is one of my songs covered.

Having these "optional" covers might also motivate people to pick songs the person really might cover. If somebody knows that King Arthur is covering them, they might pick something really un-Arthurian, just to make me squirm. If King Arthur is one of five people who might be covering them, they might be more likely to pick something more appropriate, just in hopes that I would go ahead and cover their song too, even if they aren't my official coverfight assignment. I.e., participants could enter up to five covers in the fights, but they HAVE to do their "assigned" cover.

Charles (KA)

p.s. - I am not "in" yet, and if it comes down to being assigned one specific song by one specific fighter, I will probably pass...

Coverfights have been traditionally self-hosted, and then the URL for each song is emailed to the covermaster.

I would love to see us work up a proposal for songfight! to host the songs for coverfights like this where the songs are songfight songs, tho I think the idea has been suggested in the past and turned down. Self-hosted stuff tends to disappear after a while, and I think that cover versions of songfight songs would be a worthwhile permanent addition to the SF canon... but I'm not the person putting up the money or doing the work, just somebody asking for something for free :-)

Wouldn't it be easier to just pick 3-5 songs of ours that we would like to hear covered, have the Fightmaster assign one person to cover each other person, and who ever is doing the covering can choose from the 3-5 songs of their liking?

Or, we could eliminate the song choosing on behalf of the coveree altogether and just say, "you are assigned to so-and-so, go pick a song of theirs from the archive that you would like to cover".

That's how it usually works, but that doesn't seem like what's being proposed at the start of this thread. I'd be okay with "you're covering Kill Me Sarah, go pick a song and cover it." But I got the sense that somebody wanted to make it complicated, and that's sorta my specialty...

Absolutely - but what is proposed at the start of this thread was proposed just under a year ago, for last year's coverfight. I was wondering whether there was any flexibility under this new and terrible reign ...

IN
whatever format it takes; one (not very good) possibility for this is that if somebody submits what the community may deem to be a sub-par cover (no idea how this would be determined either, maybe a poll) then the recipient could have somebody else have a crack at the song (or a different song of theirs). This isn't necessrily fair, but hopefully everyone would get one good cover that way.

DO NOT COMPLAIN. If this idea doesn't interest you, do not participate.

I posted this a long time ago because it was swimming around my head as a fun idea. The "original flavor" coverfight is where everyone puts their name in a hat, picks a different songfighter then picks a song of theirs to cover. We have also done "covermaster's choice" where JB assigned everyone songs. This is just a slight variation on both where it seemed that people would have to consider both their own songs and other people's abilities to try come up with interesting combinations. Yes, it could be easier with less songs, but I think we are up to this challenge.

You have been assigned to cover Jack Shite's "Mission Accomplished". This is your assignment.
This is how is will work. Jack picked this song for you to cover.

I don't mind doing my part if everyone else does theirs. If you don't want to put the effort in, just pick songs at random, or put the same song for each, or just keep quiet and don't play.
