Deerhoof is great. I haven't seen them live, but uh.. yeah, the fact that I vouch for them probably reinforces whatever opinion you have of them after that last post.

I'll vouch for Deerhoof too. They're pretty incredible. A bit uncomfortable at first, but as soon as you acquire the taste you'll be glad you did.

Yeah - chicks have their uses I suppose, but music-wise (Bjork and PJ Harvey notwithstanding) most are pretty ordinary. I like video-clips where they shake their tits and that, though.

Kim Deal will always be a Pixie to me. And Deerhoof makes some beautiful songs. I think they're gorgeous.

Bow wow wow.
X-Ray Spex.
The Plasmatics, feat. the Toughest Woman In the World, R.I.P.
Juliet (Lewis) and the Licks actually rock too.
The Selector.
Jane County and the Electric Chairs—well, does she count? She started out as Wayne County before the sex change.

Jen Trynin has released two great albums. Unfortunately, her first "Cockamamie" released about the same time that Alanis was getting all the attention.
Martha (sister of Rufus) Wainwright's debut has been a constant listen for me since it released.

The Spazzys
Christa Hughes
The Widow Jones
all awesome Aus female singers and songwriters.
I also got hooked onto Avenue D, two female singers and some guy who writes the music.

Tanya Donnelly (formerly of Throwing Muses, now solo)
Siouxie Sioux (formerly of Siouxie & the Banshees, Creatures)
Some French punk band named "La Doubt" (or maybe that's just one of their songs. I'm useless, memory-wise, and they only put out vinyl, the fiends. Spelling possibly incorrrect)
Hazel O'Connor (punk, her "Breaking Glass" [1980?] album is fucking brilliant, IMNSHO)
Laurie Anderson is god, though listening-tastes-wise, for you she may be one of those small volcano gods that throw pumice all over a mexican farm's back forty, as in, way distant and removed from your daily life. Rent "Home of the Brave" if you can find it, for the best possible introduction to the magic that is she.

Add
Throwing Muses to the list.

Egg is right... Without any guidance as to what you like, it's hard to pick for you.
That said, I'm happy to throw some heretofor unmentioned double-x folks into the ring
(Where they can wrastle in jello and pull eachother's hair):
The Geraldine Fibbers Raucous w/ interesting instrumentation... Cellos and whathaveyou...I prefer their first album / eps
Nina Nastasia Folky w/ evocative lyrics... also uses great instrumentation. I like "The Blackened Air"
Veda Hille Can be all over the map, musically, but tends toward the folky...(But, dude! She played with DOA! So she must rock, too!)
Meredith Monk Uhhh... now I'm pushing the definition of "Rock" but since y'all have already thrown in Diamanda, Deerhoof, and Laurie Anderson, we ought to include her. I don't love everything she does, but the song "Gotham Lullabye" (on "Dolmen Music" I think?) is fabu.
The Places or Amy Annelle I actually haven't heard Amy's recorded solo stuff, but her stuff with the Places was fantastic. Folky with full band. May be hard to get though... start here:
http://www.hushrecords.com
The Dresden Dolls Surely everyone knows about these guys already...
Quasi gets my vote over Slayer Kitty (heh) for best band featuring Janet Weiss.
Mirah I don't love most of Mirah's stuff, but her crazy wild-western tinged "Cold Cold Water" deserves attention.
I know I'm missing people... and I'm primarily picking bands where the gals are up front... with the exception of Quasi. If I think of others will amend.
I also second many already mentioned-- K. Hirsch, J. Mitchell, etc...
