Carol Cleveland Sings Where you mention David Rees in the last line - are you referring to my mate that I went to school with and used to play in a band with - or is there another one? Unfortunatley that was the only thing I found of interest in this - it was all a bit too twee for mee.

HateflowerThis sounded really good for about the first 15 seconds - then it started sounding like a couple of pimply 15-year-olds with a computer.

Johnny Goes to Balham I like this a lot. I like the sloppiness of it - but sometimes it's slightly too sloppy. Great guitar. Not sure about the lyrics - but I'm definitely enjoying it

Ken's Super Duper Band 'n Stuff Very good. Not quite great. Poppy - but not quite poppy enough. Needs to be sharper - maybe a few stop/start bits. In parts the vocals drag ever so slightly - just not quite hitting the beat

King Arthur This is very clever. At first I was thinking "...this is a pretty dumb idea", but by the second verse it had me hooked. The TV show sounds just bad enough to be real! Great guitar and well executed all round. You may just have inspired me to go back to spending more than 10 minutes on my own lyric writing

Link vs. Music Not doing much for me. And the vocals sould a bit like you've got a carrot up your arse.

Sandcastle Surgery This really isn't very good

sankyu ruckystar Great name. Nice music - but not reaching any great heights for me.

Smalltown Mike Sensational! Your vocals are just perfect. I don't like the ending though. Happy endings are bad. It should have ended in carnage.

sonofsupercar I like this. Very much. Love the meandering melody. Wonderful guitar break. This will be very hard to beat

Caravan Ray...remember kids, Caravan Ray says "Alcohol is fun!"

I will have to think about this one - my vote will go to SOS or Smalltown Mike - but Ken, KA and the Poms were also worth the price of admission.

Actually it's all sequenced to death after initial recording, so any sloppiness is intentional. Does that count as sloppiness?

Not to get too into the "deep meaning" of the song, but I don't see the ending as happy. I mean, how comfortable would it be to return to your regular office chores after calling co-workers a bunch of thieving bastards, talking about how large one of your co-workers' craps are, and telling them you're going to come to work with a shotgun?

Sounds like just another day at the office to me

I'm sure it wasn't a waste of anyone's time, and didn't add at all to the burden of maintaining a cool site where people try to make good, free music. I mean, I'm sure no one begrudges having to shine through this trash every week. Thanks a bunch, cocksuckers.
Whoa, I didn't realize SongFight is a satire-free zone. My apologies. I just wanted to do something silly, and, boy, did you make me pay for it! The most hurtful part of your comment is the fact that you merely copied and pasted what you said about Hateflower. So long, I've got to go write a song that will profoundly affect the collective consciousness of the universe called "Rockopolousaninjananophone".

Clip Art reviews.

caravanray: This one's got a cool feel. I'm not catching many of the lyrics though. Oh, at the 1:00 mark it gets easier for me to discern. Pretty cool tune, definitely relistenable.

carolclevelandsings: That's cute. It's funny, and I don't even know who David Reese (EDIT: Rees?) is. Wonderful instrumentation.

hateflower: Not much here for me, I'm afraid. Sorry.

johnnygoestobalham: Feels a bit harum scarum at first, but I'm getting into it by the time that lead guitar bit comes around. My wife, in the other room, just asked if this was XTC. Neat! I guess those chords in the chorus kind of remind me of the boys from Swindon. I like the ending of this song.

kenssuperduperbandandstuff: I think that synth thing is a little overbearing. Just a little. And that's about my only criticism here. I like the words a lot, what I head of them anyway. I hope the lyrics are posted. This sounds like a clever tune. Nice work!

kingarthur: I can always count on an interesting story from you. This is fun. Sometimes your guitars remind me of the Dead. This is one of those times. Man, you're a smooth lyricist.

linkvsmusic: Sounds familiar. That said, this is pretty funny. And the joke ends at about the right time, so you get points for that.

sandcastlesurgery: This one doesn't do it for me.

sankyuruckystar: that name cracks me up. Oh, I like the sound of this a lot, but I'm getting nervous that it's an (eek!) instrumental. Oh, there we go. Phew! This song may not have a whole lot to say, but it does say it well. Pretty cool. Nice end, too.

smalltownmike: Hey! My kids are in the other room! ...seriously, this is pretty funny. Like the office version of Institutionalized or something. Cute.

sonofsupercar: Had to stop and just listen to this one. I especially liked the instrumental bit in the middle. This is a strong contender.

i'm sorry, are you seriously offended that you submitted a fucking john lennon song and got called on it?

if you had even attempted to self-reference the fact that your song was, itself, "clip art", i'd have given you a pass. but no, nothing. just a dumb, very obvious lyric about google images.

you don't have to alter anyone's conciousness, but you do have to WRITE A SONG. really, you have to. that is the rule. you write a song. the rule is not perform a poor john lennon cover, altho sometimes that might be the rule. if that is the rule, the rule will be clearly indicated under the title.

but if you can't even be arsed to write a song, where do you get off being offended? take your medicine and stop sucking.

Carol Channing Sings

I like this, though not as much as your Going Away for A While, which I loved. But it’s clever, even if I don’t know who David Reese.

Hate Flower

The hard-panning makes the main voice tough to listen to. I enjoy the idea of the vox, but I don’t get the point of the story.

Johnny Goes to Balham

I find most of this quite grating. Too much going on, and not enough of it seems to go together. The rhythm is really sloppy at times. The electronic blipping I do like, though.

Ken’s Super Duper Band and Stuff

I like the “cut and paste/without any wasteâ€

ken - fun! i love the synth. good vox, nice and catchy.

caravan - "a man is not a camel" heh. that's the best part. also funny. good vox there. i also love the weird noises/bizarre choir in the background. title use is a little reachy.

sandcastle - too quiet. what's happening? blah, don't like the vox and this is too meandery.

sank - i'm enjoying this. nice sounds. can't really tell what you're saying, though... dunno what this is about.

smalltown - cool, kinda king missile but with different vox. i can't really support it, but i enjoy it.

johnny - not too fond of the high note on the end of the lines. "we should give pieces a chance" is a great line. pretty fun! definitely enjoying the guitar solo.

sos - i always love the sounds... guitars and vox and whatnot. this one is no exception. are these computer-generated lyrics, or what? automatic writing?

links - sooo, do you enjoy being a plagiarist? next time, write a song!

carol - great. "store-front" and "more blunt" is inspired. i like the tailor multiplied image. cool.

king art - had to do this one, eh? :) bit of a grateful dead vibe, good sound, good lyrics. i like this! good bridge stuff.

hate - hmmm lyrics are a bit graphic for work. the bad wailing is too quiet but that's probably a good thing. i'd probably like this ok if it was only the first part and it was about something else.

favorites: ken, caravan, sos, carol, king art
runners-ups: sank, smalltown, johnny

possible votes: ken, king

this one's a close one too. hmm, it's after 1. hopefully i can still vote... for king arthur - because he posted his lyrics and i like them a lot.

are they really that obscure? to me they seem to be a story about a sucessful artist who is struggling with the fact that his job requires more rote "follow the leader" art and doesn't allow him to create anything expressive or original.

it reminds me a lot of Randall Jarrell's poetry.

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/maps/poets/ ... arrell.htm

i'd be curious to hear what Bort thought of the lyrics.

maybe it's not that obscure, but it sure felt that way to me when reading... and even now. it certainly fits the general genre - lots of obscure lyrics in those kind of songs :)
i'm not that literary, myself...

ps wow, "the refugees" is pretty intense... masks and such.

Yeah, congrats. Sorry I didn't get to reviews for this fight (I haven't even listened yet, but I didn't vote, either), I'm gonna try to do better. Thanks to those who voted for me... this was one of those weeks where I had to talk myself into actually sending in the song (I, too, thought "this is a pretty dumb idea..."), but I decided that if I got mostly positive reviews and at least three votes that I could call it a success, so... thanks!

Blue & others: I have deliberately been working on making stuff less cluttered of late; I couldn't resist tracking a second guitar part, but I made m'self mix it low. Still figuring out how to make sparse sound good. On the drums, when I mix them loud, people complain about them being MIDI drums, when I mix them low, people complain about them being mixed too low. This week, Blue, you were supposed to appreciate that I'd kept them quiet :-)
