singer certainly displays talent, and you make the most of the lo-fi production, with some nice harmony vocals. guitar sounds a bit out of tune. but the main vocal line coupled with the busy arrangement really requires alot of effort to follow. this kind of sounds like lo-fi JB. this would have been more effective too cut in half time wise.

this is pretty good. real solid production and arrangement. rap is pretty good too for what it is. it's got good flow, it kind of lacks the sarcasm of frontalot but it's still really well done. i wish you'd added some other vocal elements to support the verse flows, or throw in some horns or scratches to kind of break up the drums, synth and bass. yeah, pretty solid effort for nerd rap. not something i'd buy a CD of but you did the genre well.

i'm digging this, especially the arrangement with acoustics, congas, and casio trilling. and the accordian or concertina or whatever that is is nice too. arrangement gets pretty repetitive but you break it up ok with dynamics. now if the casio started riffin stairway or watchtower after the breakdown, you'd have nailed my vote. but this is ok for a stoner jam tune, maybe a bit long.

this is a really beautiful recording. i hate to sound grinchy but i'm not big on christmas tunes, so content wise and lyrically, the song's kind of meh for me, but the recording and playing on this is really excellent.

i like this. the mix is pretty solid for techno, but it has a real good old school/analog/cure feel to it, and the vocals do too, as you accent that nicely with the reverb and delay. lyrically, it's not doing much for me but the package sounds pretty good.

really excellent in a john prine sort of way. i like the arrangement alot, how you bring things in at different times to give it dynamics while keeping a nice simple feel to it. lyrically, i'm not quite sure what you're going for, as the verse seems to list thing that are possible and the chorus just reinforces that with the title but maybe i'm missing the point somewhere. but i'm usually not that big on lyrics, more on hooks and you've got a nice hooky chorus so good for you.

ah yes, love the horny durand. this is pretty cool, has this sort of talking heads 77 feel to it with the guitar and quirky vocals in the verse. but man, i'd love to hear some horn fills in the verses. yeah, singing is pretty good, and confident which makes it better i think. nice job steve durand.

Actually ran through all the songs this time... First time in weeks. From the top:

Ballstomonte - Apparently the technology does not include ID3 tags. Vocals are a little low. Is the didactic anticonsumerism ironic?
Big Mountain Fudge Cake - Short and sweet. Reminds me of R Stevie Moore, but not enough to get my vote.
Boss McGravity - Like the harmony vocals, section from 2:10 - 2:37 is great. Might be best to end it at 3:06. Like the film of the Unbearable Lightness of Being, everything after a certain point doesn't add much for me.
Caravan Ray - Again, great while it has that spy/swamp thing going on. Then that high pitched noise starts and it goes downhill.
Chuck Chuck Moose - Not latching onto anything here.
eclecticspoons - Same here. Like the thumping noise, but this isn't really aimless enough for my taste.
The Ill Cricket Crew - Like the chirping synth. The rest seems a bit forced to my ears.
IPA - Love the bells. You should have more bells. This perked up my ears. Cheesy in all the best ways.
Johnny Cashpoint - Best lyrics thus far. Well put together. A fine song.
Jordan Seavers - Not working for me.
Klownhole - Except for the fact that it's too fast, I'm really happy with this. Not the best song in the fight (sigh), but the Stan Ridgway vs. Sebastian Bach over Sleep vibe works as well as can be expected. Also, note the wall of basses in the chorus. Who needs guitars? Apparently not Klownhole.
Luke Henley - Hmm. Like the rumbling noise.
Mankind - Where is Randy Newman when you need him? I had really high hopes for this, but the lack of vocals lets the piano down. Love the horn, but more of a ditty than a song.
Melvin - Another great entry, but like some of the other entries this seems to have an extra part that just slows it down. Can't read my note, so I'll just say the spare bridge.
Phunt Your Friends - I love pirate songs. So this moves up. But it doesn't do much for me beyond that.
riomondo - Reminds me of the Landfills, and will stick around a while. But pales in comparison to
Ross Durand - Works all the way around. Great recording, a good rerun of a topic that is addressed several times in the fight, but manages to remind me of two of my favorite records at once (Pete Seeger's Rainbow Race and Sheik Yerbouti by Frank Zappa). Easily the best thing.
Sevateem - Reminds me of Jean-Michele Jarre. Not in a good way.
Starcommand - Doesn't get moving as often as it should. Some of the sounds are great, especially the patch that comes in at 3:20 or so. Like those last two minutes a lot.
Steven Durand - Love the horns. The guitar sounds a little muted - a little compression and a little push on the click would make it a lot funkier. The call and response is a good idea, but just not as good as the other Durand.

No question here. Ross by a decent way.

Steve Durand...this reminds me of the Movie "The Brave Little Toaster" the way the song is written and the way the voices come in...

Balls to Monte-I loved the intro to this song. It took me a couple listens to figure out the arrangement of the song. It seems like there's two extra measures that take away from the flow of the song after the "yeah's" at the end of the choruses, but that's being pretty particular. This song is <good>.

bigmountainfudgecake-Cool bass at the end, but not really a song.

McGravity-The guitar on his sounds like crap, but once I got over that I realized that this was a pretty good song. Like the harmony and the background "ahh's" a lot. Work on getting that guitar to sound more alive. I think it sounds like you're strumming too hard, as well.

Caravan Ray-You're mixes always turn me off, especially the way you do your vocals, but it sounds like that's intentional seeing how they're always that way. I like the chorus a lot, but the verses are pretty dull. This is <okay>.>

Chuck Chuck Moose-I did the instrumentals and the verses. Chuck #2 lent his voice to the chorus, as usual. I thought this was one of my better fights, but no one else seems to be a big fan. Go figure.

Eclectic Spoons- This is a pretty cool groove, but that's all it is. I like the vocal samples that sound like talking over an intercom or something.

The Ill Cricket Crew- Man, this is funky. The lyrics seem pretty ridiculous. The mix and production are pretty awesome on this, and I love the weird key change at the end of the second rapper's verse. The first and last guy's are my favorite rapper's, but the third guy has that awesome line, "What's the use. Technology's got nothin' on Dr. Seuss". This is <excellent>.

IPA-That acoustic sounds nice, and I also like that synth/organ in my right ear. Extra points for the Rock n' Roll robots who will "rock my face", but negative points for that annoying, out of tune instrument in my left ear. This song isn't bad, but it's outstays its welcome. <okay>

Johnny Cashpoint-Pretty good, I think this is my favorite song of yours so far that I've heard. You're vocals are less appealing because of all that processing. This song is <ok>, but it's a little too sing songy.

Jordan Seavers-Why'd you leave that noise and throat clearing at the beginning? That being said, I love when you bring the rock all of a sudden. You know how to write a great pop song, and you have an extremely likeable voice. This is <excellent>.

Klownhole-What's a blumpkin? I appreciate the intensity, but the song doesn't really appeal to me at all. <below average>.

Luke Henley-This recording is really noisy. The guitar playing is also pretty sloppy. I like how emotional the vocals are, though. That's about the only good thing I can say about this. Don't blow on your mic, it can damage them (unless it's a moving coil, then not such a worry). This is <below average>.

Mankind- The piano sounds great, I had really high expectations at the start. Then the horn came in, and I got a little worried. Then nothing else came in, and I gave up. This is <below average>.

Melvin-Usual good mix and production, but the songwriting just isn't as good as I've heard from you before. It's not grabbing me. This is <okay>.

Phunt-I listened to the whole thing. I don't know, sorry, I can't think of helpful to say.

Rio Mondo- This is hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh. This is <good>.

Ross Durand-This is well recorded, mixed, etc., I just don't really like it. Sorry if that's unfair. This is <okay>.

Sevateem- Quit it with the creepy German girl! This is really repetitive, I guess that's part of the style for this music, but I just can't really abide it. This is <below average>.

Star Command-Oh yeah. I love the instrumentals. I feel like the vocals sit on the fence between sung and spoken and you should make up your mind which you're doing. The mix seems like everything is just at the same level, which detracts a little. This is <good>.

Steve Durand-That guitar sounds a little sloppy. Horns are always cool, though, and I like the vocal panning a lot. This is <okay>.

Big Mountain Fudge Cake

I was looking forward to this, because I really dug your God Hates Penguins. And this is good, but in the context of your three songs (New Sex) there’s not a whole lot of variety. I know that’s the point, but still. But you’ve got the trashtalking down, I think.

Boss McGravity

It’s too bad the recording quality is low, because the song is pretty good. Very Barenaked Ladies. Nice.

Caravan Ray

The music is really buried, and the whole mix is really muddy. But I dig the chorus. I wonder what this song would sound like a little faster? Faster, I bet.

Chuck Chuck Moose

That long intro almost lost me, and I don’t think it’s really all that necessary (the intro, that is, not to lose me.) This is really great. Love it. Some variation in line lengths in your vocals would make this even funkier, letting lines carry onto the next line, etc. The vocals also need to be brought forward a little bit, too, because they’re a little hard to hear. But I really like this. Dig those crazy instruments and blips. The chorus lyrics seem a little obvious and blunt, but hey, it’s a good sentiment so why not? It would have been nice to hear the chorus more than once.

IPA

Nice synth mixed in with the acoustic. Or is that a accordian? Was this recorded live? Good song, and it would benefit greatly from a better recording. I don’t love this, but there are some great parts in here. Rock and roll robots would rock your face, wouldn’t they?

balls to monte - that voice is annoying me. And now there's more than one. The music sounds just fine. The voice is more palatable around 1:05, I'm not really sure why, but it sounds more honest and less put-on. Overall, the music is nice, but I don't care for the song.

boss mcgravity - sounds kinda cheesy, like a salesman with a guitar. I hope this was intentional, what with the shoo-wops and all. Kinda funny.

caravan ray - I like those noises, and I love your voice in this setting. This song has a gritty feel that I absolutely love. Cheesy lyrics for sure... but they sound just fine here, I don't know why. Maybe because your delivery is so honest-sounding. Love it, possible vote.

chuck chuck moose - the sound at the beginning is pretty neat but the toybox percussion was pretty annoying until that bass and synth came in... now it sounds like drive-by music. That's a compliment. I don't particularly care for your rap delivery but this is still ominous as hell. Are you really a crack dealer? I like the sung verse quite a bit. I like the song, it's just all-in-all a bit repetitive.

the eclectic spoons - this is neat-sounding. I feel like it captures the spirit of the title in some sense. Ultimately it's just too samey all the way through. Good noises though, sounds quite professional to my untrained ears.

the ill cricket crew - sounds fine. Nicely produced and humorously rapped, I guess. But whatever, it didn't do much for me.

ipa - goofy. I'm getting tired of goofiness. I guess the title invites it.

johnny cashpoint - I like your voice. I don't really care for the toybox drumming, especially when you make it blazingly obvious with that snare drum all the way to the end. It's catchy and I like it, but again, too cheesy for me.

jordan seavers - The intro is nice but that drumming is pretty annoying. The song sounds just fine and I like your voice just fine. Thanks for not mentioning robots. The song's just fine.

klownhole - more authentically cheesy than anything else I've heard just yet, except for caravan ray. A fine effort but damn, this is just way too long for what it is.

luke henley - finally, a serious song in this fight. I like the chorus a lot, your delivery is perfect for it. The microphone explosions are annoying, maybe put them lower in the mix or cut them out entirely, it doesn't really need them.

mankind - I don't really know what this means. It sounds just fine, but the piano is getting on my nerves without anything to take my mind off it except a drunkenly mumbling trombone.

melvin - get some new chord progressions. You have a very specific style. Catchy enough. Also, perhaps your voice doesn't need to duplicate the bass guitar line for half of the song.

phunt your friends - the non-pirate-y voice seems kinda out of place here. It ought to be more pirate-y. I love the other voice though. Kinda funny but it doesn't hold my interest enough to get a vote.

rio mondo - this is the first one to actually get a chuckle out of me, kudos. Quite a few chuckles actually. I can't in good conscience vote for this one ahead of caravan ray, but it's definitely funny.

ross durand - hey, mr. piano man. A fine song, actually, though I don't really care for the lyrics. A bit plain-spoken, perhaps, for my taste. It all sounds just fine, anyway, just not doing much for me.

sevateem - interesting noises all, and it's produced just fine. Kraftwerk occurs to me, although that's probably mostly the accented vocals at the end that's doing that. It's a bit boring though.

starcommand - I don't really care for the voice in this song, doesn't feel like it fits, perhaps because it doesn't sound very honest. The music seems kinda empty as well. I don't know, I kind of like a lot of the individual sections but the voice is turning me off.

steve durand - The call-and-response sounds kinda silly. I think your voice could stand to be a little bit more clipped, it feels to me like you're hanging on to everything a bit too long. I don't really care for the lyrics, but then, I don't care for a lot of lyrics in this fight. Good song, but it's all a little bit goofy, and goofy is really getting me down right now.

Caravan Ray, definitely. For the number of songs in this fight, I was a bit disappointed overall. I think the title lent itself well to goofiness.

EDIT: I find it kind of strange that I'm the only one who digs that Caravan Ray super-reverbed sound. I just wanted to reaffirm my diggage. I dig.

caravan ray - hey. nice song sorta. i know that other guy liked the reverb but i think it is a little too much. its sorta drained out with the reverb. i think that giving it a more full sound would have helped. the song itself isnt that bad. but i think that it seemed a little empty to me. i think that with a few tweaks to the production it could sound a little more full and grab my attention more. good job though.

the ill cricket crew - i think the first 5 seconds of the song sounds awesome. im not a big fan of the rap stuff, but i think that you did an alright job with the song.

ipa - the organ and bongos are cool. same with the solo thingy at like 3 minutes. the accordion isnt in tune with the rest of the instruments, but i think you dont care.

johnny cashpoint - the beginning of the song sounds really cool. the effect you used on some of the vocals doesnt really sound that cool. i think overall you did a good job on your song.

Ok, I'm about sick of people whining when they get a comment that's not an in-depth analysis of where they went wrong in their song.

If you get a review that says only "I don't dig", SUCK IT UP. If you really want to use your reviews for something other than ego-stroking masturbation, then look at the songs the reviewer DID like, and analyze your own song accordingly. If Drunkenshakespeare usually likes one sort of song over another, and yours fits into the category he doesn't like, then you can say "hmmm, this doesn't transcend genre bias". If Drunkenshakespeare usually likes the kind of song you made, then you should think about what's different this time that he may not have liked. Lyrics? Melody? Production? The answer is probably obvious.

If you don't want to do that work, fine, I understand. I probably won't either. But stop fucking complaining. EVERYBODY, stop fucking complaining, when you get a short, "useless" review. It's ALL TOO OBVIOUS that you're just whining because somebody didn't like your song and said so out loud. Nobody has ever complained because someone said "AWESOME" about their song. Don't be a punk.
