Put up or shut up. If you think that other people don't know what emo is, then you have to name like 5 emo bands. I'll bet dollars to donuts that someone is going to laugh at what you think emo is.
I think a good start would be Husker Du, Fugazi, and Weezer. Fuck all that other crap that came along after them. That's only 3, I know.
Just chiming in here.

let them wear their stupid clothes. take lots of pictures of them. that way you can embarass them in 20 years...and also keep them out of political office.
am i the only one who thinks it dumb to categorize music by genre?

If you think that Weezer is emo, then you're just as much of a problem as the people you think you're better than.

I think Weezer fits into the "post-emo indie rock" (indie rock at least somewhat influenced by emo bands) catagory just fine, along with Jimmy Eat World.
If you want to go back a few years further back when "Emo" was newer, you get Hot Water Music, Rites of Spring and Fugazi. Go even further back (like the late 80's) you get bands like Clikatat Ikatowi (which I love by the way) and Embassy.
And if I am dead wrong, correct me. Don't just toss a nondescript statement out there...

to me anyways, the smiths are pretty emo. or the cure. which is not a bad thing as i like both bands alot. but for me, and my most likely misinformed opinion, morrisey better defines "emo" to me than henry rollins does.

Well, their first album certainly is emo. As far as i'm concerned, anyway. YMMV.

Post-emo indie-rock? Exactly what emo bands does it sound like influenced Weezer? Or what indie rock, for that matter? They sound like they grew up listening to like Boston and the Cars. There's like nothing at all edgy about Weezer. (I like Weezer.)
Their first album is power-pop, as far as I'm concerned. YOIB.

I am a little disappointed, I thought this was going to be a thread about Earth Wind and Fire.
I always thought of Fugazi as punk. When I think emo, I think of Cursive.
Is that part of the problem? It all seems so vauge, anything that is emotional rock could fit.

I think that
is the problem... I hereby resolve to not use the phrase "Emo" for anything anymore.
I'm gonna feel so old when VH1 makes "I love the 00's" and some trendy comedian says "Emo. What the hell
was emo?" then the scene cuts to some actor saying "Wasn't that where you cut your hear into a reverse mullet?"

Pop-punk isn't an oxymoron, it's just an overused and incorrectly applied phrase.
No - Mike is right. Pop-punk is an oxymoron.

Is 'emo' seriously a term that's been around for more than a few years?
I've only ever heard it applied to these mtv wankers with all the stupid facial piercings and wussy angst.
ugh.

Song-and-dance-men.
