yeah... screw the review

but

DANG! I like that hell yeahs song!

C-HACK..I dig on the tenderness you brought to the table... I like how intimate it sounds.

JOS... do0d..you make me want to shoot myself and give it all up. Your song is very catchy

I know I've said this already..but yeah...

Jack, ABOMB (I swear I meant ABOMB), J$.,...screw it EVERYBODY...KICKS BUTT

I am particularily psyched that ballstomonte joined in! He's like the rolling stones to King Arthur's Dire Straits.

Definitely. I was surprised to see it there, and I'm not going to vote. I couldn't decide anyway.

I'm not going to write reviews, but I may write a big post of praise for all that's praiseworthy.

As good as these covers are, what really stands out for me is the songwriting craft. Once a whole buncha different people are singing the songs, it makes the stylistic variety and consistent high quality stand out.

Yeah, the poll is unnecessary.

I also wanted to say that after hearing the Troublemaker remake, I am a huge H & the H fan. The song was so beautiful, it gave me chills.

Well I asked because I feel guilty not reviewing. Myself, feedback is the #1 reason I come to this site. Making music in the bedroom, it's really hard for me to tell what works or not. I find anything anyone says incredibly helpful, even if it's "you suck." So there's a blanket rule for me: I always appreciate any kind of review for anything I post. But I'm perfectly happy not reviewing other people's stuff.

As for the poll, I think polls are fun. I'll vote, but damn if it's not gonna be a really hard decision. Gonna take a few days of listening, at least.

The poll isn't to determine any winners or losers here. It's just for fun, to pick your favorite. It's not a contest. It's a LOVEFEST. There is one winner. King Arthur. So if you don't like the poll, ignore it because I can't delete it and if it wasn't there, someone would complain about not having one.

But honestly, I really can't pick one favorite so I'm not going to vote either.

Hack - I really liked what you did with "Blue Signal." When I originally wrote the lyric, it was cast in first person - "As it awakens in my mind, I sense as it begins its climb..." but I switched it to third person because it was just sounding whiny with me singing it. I think you could have pulled it off in first person and made it work (that's a compliment!).

http://www.charleswolff.com/SF/BSIG-1.jpg is the first page of the original version of the song... if anybody's interested...

Thanks! I'm glad you went with the 3rd person on it. I kept thinking of that scene in "The Sun Also Rises" where Lady Brett sees the bullfighter and she has to go over to flirt (and soon sleep) with him, and the lead character (Jake, I think) asks why she has to do that, and she tells him something like "I just have to. I don't have any choice in the matter." I'd been wanting to sing about that for a while now, and your song does it perfectly. And bringing in the color blue was just the cherry on top.

Jack-

I'm not sure if I was supressing a laugh, but if you listen close to that bit, you can hear my coffee pot on two of the three vocal tracks! It was, after all, a late night!

Ever since I was contacted by the Super-Hxaro Santa and told to keep this gigantic secret, I have been so excited to record the song and to see King Arthur's reaction to his gift! After a listening session with Phil last night, I have to say that everyone has done a fabulous job of interpreting their covers and of capturing the King Arthur vibe and spirit. A few of the songs that stand out to me are Glen Case's version of Duece, Balls to Monte's rendition of Red Flag, Abominominous doing Put Cindy Back on the Bus (and not just because I'm married to him!), Johnny's interpretation of Lavender Splendo(u)r... wow, I just realized that I could go on and on, which simply means that I agree, everyone's covers are great!

I also need to add that I had a great time listening to all of the King Arthur tunes to choose the one I wanted to do. I have to admit that every time I saw that KA was on the board since I found out about this super secret, I have wanted so badly to PM him and just say "hey". I decided against it because I don't normally communicate with him and it may have seemed out of plave.... but now I will say, Hey Charles, your songs are great. You deserve this and I am honored to have been asked to participate.

Besides reviews, this is the longest post I have ever written...

Was just listening to all the songs. With iTunes set to crossfade playback (which I don't usually like. I'm at a work computer), it creates a nice White Album kind of feel. I absolutely love everyone's entry, and if that makes me non-critical, then so be it.

I was thinking that the Donnas should do the Hell Yeahs arrangement of "Too Goth To Rock." I'm telling you, it has HIT written all over it. I'm quite serious.

All of these are great songs and whereas normally we're all trying to write and arrange a song in a week, you always come away with "Well, if I had more time..." Well, at least I have that feeling a lot. Anyway, this time around, all we had to do was arrange and record. The songs were already great. But everyone did such a great job of making them sound completely different from the originals.

Congrats to King Arthur.

Ok... This has been bugging me since you posted yesterday... Do you mean that if the Donnas were to cover the Hell Yeahs version of King Arthur's "Too Goth to Rock" then it would be a hit (if the Donnas did it) or are you paying us a compliment by saying that it is a hit now? Was it not a hit already as a King Arthur song?

Sorry, I had to ask! I totally not trying to be a bitch. :)

Not at all. I meant the original was brilliant, you're arrangement is more like a hit. I was complimenting you (The Hell Yeahs) slightly more. (Sorry King Arthur). I was saying your arrangement would be a hit for the Donnas only because they are a known entity. In my heart, it's a hit as is. It inspires me to start practicing more. The arrangement (unlike most of mine) is very tight and together.

I hope this cleared it up.

Hey...

Not that I'm among the great artists around here or anything, but since I'm gonna want to take this thing to show and tell on Monday morning, I whipped together a little CD cover art...

king_arthur wrote:And I don't want to turn this thread into an "I got screwed..." thread, it just seemed like an opportunity to, ummm, remind somebody of something...

However, since it got brought up... what I would really like... I did a song for the "Brown Boxes" fight, which turned out as a pretty awful performance of a song that I thought had some possibility, but didn't deserve the one vote it got... I played with it a little bit for the "Cover Thyself" cover fight, but didn't get the new version finished.

I'd be thrilled if somebody could give it a listen, figure out how to make it work better, and record a version... feel free to change lyrics (a clue to where I think it went wrong: I had recorded the song, then made some fairly major lyric changes in the lead vocal but never got around to making changes in the "echo" vocals, so some of them don't entirely connect), arrangement, instrumentation, whatever.

I realize that GoM is supposed to be about covering released stuff, but I don't even remember what I asked for last time...

Very cool - thank you!

This is, umm, very "in tune" for a Jack Shite production! Am I hearing some of the Loyalty Day folks helping out in there? Well, whoever, thanks for doing this! I like the way you've chopped out the extra bars of nonsinging between the lines in the verses, I think that helps the flow a lot.

Very cool.
