Simply putting effort into trying to prove a dubious theory doesn't make it any more accurate. That wasn't my point anyway. I just think that Spoons deserved a review that was more than just talking about me
But if you want to play that game, bucko, I have a comparision test of my own is Melvin the death of music? You decide.

No more Adderol for Melvin. --EDIT-- So is this a sub-sidefight now?

I think it's just that it's a ridiculously easy sub-genrej$ wrote:Kill Me Sarah - Comedy Country is a worringly popular sub-genre. If you like this sort of thing, this is very sweetly done, but that harmonica is a bit over-powering.

Sorry you were overpowered, I'll keep that in mind next time.

I look at stuff this way, (leans sideways and squints).
I can't sing, but so far in this fight I've had comparisons with...
Dave Vanian
Ian Curtis
Johnny Cashpoint
Which is (for me) way cOOl!
But I am English and I have an English accent, and currently on SongFight! unless I'm mistaken there is only Myself, Johnny, Pedro and Kamakura, who are British, so I guess at times we will be compared, but also it would be easy to say 'Hey you sound like Elvis' because you have an american accent to an american artist... damn! it's really early and I've forgotten where I was going with this (stares blankly off into space)...
Oh! Yeah... but I have seen this discussion somewhere before on one of the other forum/thread/page things and there is a genuine consensus that people from one country cannot differentiate between accents of another country, which is a shame but in a way great because either they think we all sing fantastic or at least I'm not as shite as I really am...
Umm does that make sense?
Anyway thanks for the reviews, and the kind comments...

Keepers for me: Beefy and Bewells (awesome acoustic guitar sound on this one), vote Bewells.
Just not my thing, stylewise: Dark Side, Marn, Special Relatives
For the rest, observations on why they weren't "keepers" - based on a single listening and some scribbled notes:
Damien: effects seemed unnecessary and overdone to me.
Sp00ns: started out interesting, but kinda fell apart for me as it went on. I thought about maybe hxaro'ing it, but I think the results would be a disappointment to many
Hangover Black: I get what you're going for, the performance just didn't do it for me. I'm a big Prince fan, I'd love to hear what he'd do with this...
Kill Me Sarah: I know this is the pot dissing the kettle, but... a little too cheezy for me...
Melvin: well done for what it is, just not my thing... though I realize that if I ever wanna actually win a fight, I probably need to sound more like this...
Middle March: could use a bass or something bottom-end... encode at a higher bitrate, I could hear the MP3 artifacts
Phillipso: I couldn't make out the words, and that's what I'm most interested in in a song...
Purdy Lips: see comments on Kill Me Sarah
Rabid: see comments on Kill Me Sarah
Ross Durand: I heard the first line of the lyric and I could pretty much predict where it was going, nothing surprised me from then on... if I was going to hxaro this, I think I'd rearrange the lines in the lyrics so that the AABB rhyme scheme becomes ABAB...
Stubby: I'd love to hear Neil Young do this one...
Meddling: performance just falls apart, rhythm-wise
Wages: there might be a good song in there, the performance just didn't do it for me...

soooo many... i'll just give a few mentionables:
beefy - sweet rhymes. "full bar of health but my mana is low". awesome.
the be wells - really nice tune.
j. murdock and the kid he ate - interesting and weird.
melvin - i like it despite it's kansas meets alanis vibe...

Beefy
+++ I like when the beat goes doubletime. Your voice has a good quality +++
--- Your phrasing is very amateurish. Too many simple eight notes and forced inflection ---
The BeWells
+++ Great production. Nice delivery. +++
--- Lacks a "chorus", some kind of memorable hook ---
Damien Verrett
+++ Reminds me of Hemorrhoy Rogers, one of my favorite artists ever! +++
--- But not nearly as interesting, or funny, or melodic ---
/// What's with the lame ending? ///
The Dark Side of Archaelogy
--- The dark B-side to a boring concept album about Indiana Jones' favorite topic ---
+++ which turns into a retarded death metal extravaganza +++
@eclectic spOOns
--- whoops, sorry. wrong channel ---
Hangover Black
+++ This is kind of nice in a creepy way +++
--- Not hip enough to carry the wack production ---
Kill Me Sarah
+++ Nice as a joke track +++
Marn
--- I'd rather hear most people tuning their guitars than this ---
Melvin
+++ Nice distant drums. Nice bass. +++
/// The whole mix is weird. Tinny. Not sure if I like it ///
+++ harmonies +++
--- yeah, this really could use a little better mixing for more clarity and punch ---
Middlemarch
--- Awkward rhyme in the chorus ---
+++ Decent performance. I like the harmonica etc. +++
--- You've got some really bad compression sounds on this. Try a different MP3 algorithm. ---
Phillipso
/// I once had a tumor in the corner of my jaw. It was like a little cyst about the size of a Skittle candy. I could move it aorund abotu a halfan inch in any direction. I would sit there in boring classes and play with my cyst, rolling it around under my jaw. ///
--- This song is so boring and awkward, I keep wishing I still had a cyst to play with. ---
Purdylips
+++ Starfinger!!! Production +++
--- J$ melody is weak, pitchy ---
+++ J$ outro +++
Rabid Garfunkel
--- I'm sorry. I thought I asked for this with no pickles. And what's this mustard on here? I thought I asked for mayo onion sauce. Geez, how hard is it to make a burger? Hm. Yeah, I'd like to speak to the manager, please. ---
Ross Durand
/// It's a hard title. I guess I can't really complain about how forced this story sounds. Not to my taste ///
The Special Relatives
+++ This is the best song so far. This is truly interesting +++
--- Some of the vocals are out of key, but they are mixed low enough ---
+++ Louie Armstrong +++
Stubby and the Dr.
--- Guitar is kind of lagging here and there. Should've done another take ---
+++ Vocals are surprisingly awesome. As is the wack guitar solo +++
Those Meddling Kids
--- The trick to chipmunk voices is talking really slow and then raising
the pitch. Your intro is almost unintelligible. ---
+++ The track is cool. Nice ocean (?) sounds. +++
--- The chipmunk comments are lame. Just not funny ---
+++ Drum and Bass breakbeats !!! Oh this makes the song, from 2:30 on +++
Wages
--- Have you ever met my sister's boyfriend's sister? Her name is Melody. She is very well known for making songs listenable ---
OK, folks. I think I'm a vote for Special Relatives, with honorable nods to Meddling Kids, Purdy, Melvin, Stubby, Bewells

Those Meddling Kids:
Should be in a South Park episode with Jesus singing the 'normal' vocal. I like the way the parts work.
Kill Me Sarah:
Good ol' down home performance -- toe tapping. Belongs on an outdoor stage amongst the apple trees.
Stubby (Phillips) and The Doctor (Water):
Yeah, we should have made it shorter (dump the 1st verse) and a little faster -- maybe thrown in a piano. And King Arthur -- I don't know if you were joking or not, but I can hear Neil Young doing this.
The BeWells:
Nice atmosphere with the modulated guitar (that is a guitar, isn't it?) against the fine acoustic.
Wages:
Nice intro. I like your voice, except the slightly off tune stuff. I assume you're doing that on purpose. This would be great as a rock/pop with some strings on the refrain.
Phillipso:
Bring your vox up -- I want to hear it! Nice guitar interplay in the solo. Good sound overall -- except the vox. Should have ended it with the nice 3 chord out at 3:27...
The Dark Side of Archaeology:
This is cool. Man, I had to go watch a few minutes of Teletubbies to cleanse my soul after that one, and I still hear voices everywhere I go...
Rabid:
Good sound / production. Love that bass sound -- why can't I get that? I that mic'd or direct? What kind of bass? I know I'm doing lots of things less than idealy re: capturing sounds, and bass is one of them. EQ? (can't be my playing... Ha!) Anyway, fairly good song -- could use a change or something.
The Special Relatives:
Amusing. Pleasant enough. Hey, Satchmo -- thought you were dead, man! What up?
Purdy Lips:
This sounds good except the lead vox should be more serious, I think. Backing vocals sound GOOD!
Damien Verrett:
Nice guitar. I like the verb on the vox here and there -- and the doubling.
Nice out. But the vox is a little too sweet. I like my applesause without the sugar.
Ross Durand:
Clever lyric -- "middle of her forehead..." and "reversed...". Yeah, Jim Croce -- and about as good, too. Nice job.
Marn:
Well, that was different. From the 'White Album' school of short filler songs ala 'Honey Pie'?
Middle March:
Nice harmonies. Competently played and recorded. This belongs in the same orchard as KMS.
Melvin:
This is GOOD! I didn''t even listen to the words -- sorry. The 'wall of sound' was right on, man. Excellent post-production. Tight. Full. I like it.
Beefy:
'Applesause and Christ' -- right on. Good lyrics. Good sound. Yeah, it's good.
Hangover Black:
What? Can't hear you. Nice changes / variety. Good groove. You have good voice(s?), bring it up a little.
@eclectic spOOns:
Get serious, dude. Your voice would be much better off 'less goofy'; the rest of the song is eclectic enough to get the point across. Nice panning vocals.
Melvin and Ross and DSoA are tops here. Man, I had to check to see if I left a TV on -- those fucking voices!
EDIT: After thinking about my review, it occurs to me that I used the word 'serious' twice without really meaning serious. If there's one place we don't need to be serious in this world, it's in SongFight! What I meant was that purposely goofy, cartoonish vocal styles -- at least in the songs I referenced, add an annoying detraction to the songs, at least to me. That's all. I've heard it used to good effect elsewhere (Oingo Boingo, for instance), but not here. Of course, if opinions were like assholes, mine would be all puckered and smelly. Oh, wait...

NIce, J$. I should have made it clear that these were two different comments - one that Starfinger's appearance pleased me, and the other that the production pleased me. Either way, good entry, and I look forward to more of this collabo team.j$ wrote:Actually I produced it.EightLeggedOedipus wrote:[+++ Starfinger!!! Production +++
