Vote sp00n. Vote s-p00n.

Yeah, I'm an Army of Darkness geek. So what? Wasn't the best in the fight, but I wound up liking it the best. Thanks, man.

sorry im late.

Hans Gruber-I really like this song a lot. I know you said you turn your vox down cuz you think they are out of tune but I think your voice sounds good in this song. Plus I think song fighters appreciate being a little out of tune sometimes. Great song!

Carpetburn- style is great, wow I love this song so far. It sounds disheveled a little bit, but I think that’s what gives it so much character. The guitars are awesome. Like what you did with the vox, and the music keeps is interesting all the way through.

Steve Durand-wow another song about RPGs. Your entries are always great. You use your obvious skills in a unique way , I always like hearing the full band. Solid entry

Spoonyluv-lyrics are interesting., you definitely have your own style. Music is put together well.
Another RPG reference. It drives and drives.

Cow exchange- hmm…I think this might be my favorite song so far. Production skills are evident. I love the vocal harmonies. The verses kinda remind me of soul coughing in some parts. This is a great song . I think you might win.

Jolly roger-I like the general idea. I really like the vocal layers.

Rabid garfunked-brave rendering of mary and her small baby sheep. Thump thump techno thump distorted vocals, I thought it was creative.

front little-well, its very thorough. I like the lines that you sing. I don’t really care at all about this whole role playing game scene, but that’s just my preference. Its kinda like listening to a math joke that im too stupid to understand.

Danyer-im sorry. I stopped at sandpaper.

Thanks for the Frisbee-me. I liked this song for the first hundred times, but I think im going to have to let it cure for a while before I listen to it again. I like how it turned out, but I agree with everyone who said it could use more instruments.

carpetburn or cow exchange have a good chance of winning this fight. Although this was a great fight all around.

Yeah, thanks...me too. First one, though... The vox down-mixing is force of habit. (As is all my production)

Hope you didn't glean that from my review. I feel just the opposite. I really like the simplicity. It has a sort of intimacy. If you develop it further, keep it simple and 'small' - maybe adding more stuff, but keeping the impact under the radar (like a knee slap). I really think that the music works well with the lyrics. You'll be pleased to know that your chorus has been stuck in my head for the past few days...very catchy, damn you.

Hans, I like how your avatar doesn't show below the waist...but I know what's going on there. That Hans, such a dirty bastard, in such an 80's way.

No keyboard stand needed! Like riding a bike with a missing seat...

BTW, nice little GERT icon. You guys should start a cult. Make some t-shirts.

I voted for Thanks for Frisbee - that elephant/relevant rhyme at the beginning was a beauty.

Also liked Carpetburn's Kings of Leon impersonation

Denyer - you're an idiot - "cat burning weather" heh!

Random and other thoughts today.

@eclectic sPOONs:
I like the drive and the bass, then the synth comes in -- nice. Weird vocal. The synth breaks are the best parts.

Rabid Garfunkel:
You ARE having fun, aren't you? Interesting, and good pace. Perfect length. I like the old guy. Finally read the manual for your sampler, or what? This is a cool direction for you. Make it rock next time, with timing or stylistic changes.

Jolly Roger:
Nice feel to it. A little over-ambitious on the drums, and the vocals -- probably due to being rushed. Decent changes, and enough of them, helps this along. Mind your pans ( vox harmony ) when mastering.

Hans Gruber:
Nice chords / riff. Over and over. The bass needs to follow or complement the riff better, IMHO. Well played. Just needs a twist or two, structure-wise. You know --something unexpected. Like a Buck Dharma solo.

Cow Exchange:
I like the energy flow and ebb. It kept my interest for 3:27. I appreciate the piano in there; not enough good, pounding piano in SF.

Carpetburn:
Nice Steve Howe tribute. The rocking parts are separated by too much fluff. Decent jam.

Steve Durand:
'Fancy Colours' meets Sergio Mendes. The vocal seems out of place somehow.

Frontalittle:
Not for me, but gotta be a record for sheer quantity of lyric.

Danyer:
This is getting a little too weird for me. Not in the right mood, I guess...

Thanks For The Frisbee:
Good guitar, layout, and sound. But it's not reeling me in.

Hans and Cow were the most interesting / entertaining. Rabid and Carpetburn are next.

Hey thanks Stubby! The old guy is Thomas A. Edison, no samplers were used in the making of this, just theremin, midi sound module & keyboard, a Mattel Synsonics drum toy from the '80s, and me yelling through a guitar amp :P

And congrats FAL!

Awesome. That's how Thomas would have done it. That's either a lot of work, or you're a one - take wonder!

I'll have to dig up my Synsonics. Hmm... wonder if I can adapt them to MIDI?

i forgot to vote, but here are some reviews.

carpetburn: this is somewhat sloppy, but it works. i like it. you guys have a really cool sound. good song to start off the fight.

cow exchange: yeah. this is pretty cool. i like the weird timing stuff and the claps are a great touch. also, nice with the synth stuff toward the end.

danyer: yep.

@eclecticspOOns: this sounds like you've listened to a lot of j$. it's not bad, but it lacks that certain dirty energy that makes a j$ song enjoyable. i know you're not j$, but it sounds a lot like his music. the production is also way too far in the background. i think if you brought the song forward this would be a lot better.

frontalittle squad: you're well put together and all (except for some of the white boy rapping completely lacking in rhythm), but i'm not a gamer or a computer nerd so nerdcore goes above my head. though, i really enjoyed the chorus to your "space cadet."

hans gruber: i'm pretty sure that ivan drago is the ultimate villain. this is a cool, catchy song. the production makes it feel really hazy and drugged out. because of that it loses some necessary energy. i like that string sounding synth line that comes in after lines in the verses.

jolly roger: i thought you played the drums. this would be a lot better with real drums. and better vocal takes. i think it may be the meter in the lyrics that make it awkward. the short length is nice.

rabid garfunkel: this is pretty weird. that's all i can really say. i don't know what this is supposed to be.

steve durand: the trumpet is awesome. i like the dark carnival feel to this. i can picture a carny barker singing this in front of a tent in which nerds are playing d&d and getting totally fucked up on inhaler hits.

thanks for the frisbee: ooh. i can't stand the guitar tone. it's that plugged in acoustic sound that just bugs me. just play into a mic. other than that, this song is really lovely.

sorry, most of the time i record vocals and guitar at the same time.
its a bad habbit i know...especially when you remix ( which i never do )
and my problem is that i only have one mic....still. i'll try to fix it in the future. thanks.

and also thanks to all the reviewers for putting in the time and effort.

I do. I'm thinking of getting a sound board and microphones to record them, but I'm not sure where to start. Does anyone have advice?

i dont consider myself a drummer by any stretch. ive only recorded drums for sf once for'rate of decay' and i thought they sounded like crap because i used one mic, but i guess it was better than nothing. some others really liked them...still others told me i should have left them out, but i say if you can record them at all, even badly, they would still sound pretty good.
but im a production idiot. i just wanted to help if i could.

Hello again, Songfight. I know it's been a couple of....years....since I've posted or even competed...

...blah blah blah...

....I just wanted to throw out a word to Frontalittle Squad for their geeky rap song.

Because I'm primarily a producer (not so much of a writer), I've been hanging out at a community for producers called FutureProducers.

One idea that's been bouncing around in my head is to create a secondary "contest" on top of the weekly SF. The current idea is to have a monthly lottery of winning SF songs. Whichever song is chosen (method TBD) will then be "produced" by FP members, with the best production winning some kind of PR or exposure, maybe some schwag.

That's kind of the general idea. Foster some kind of community collaborations between already related parties; writers and producers.

Anyway, I hope you don't think I'm derailing the thread. A lot of the tracks were interesting, but IMHO Frontalittle's song was the most creative.

Incidentally, I've tagged a number of songs from SF in the last few months. :)
All your ear are belong to me.

In between Wormsweaters 'Convalescence' I had TFTF's Saving Throw swimming around my head today. Sure, you've got better songs but I couldn't get rid of the whole "Honey bee only gets one tryyyyy, to defend itself, it stings you then slowly dies". Brilliant
