Here's an article from WFMU about the history of yelling "Freebird".

Like most musicians, I'm pretty tired of the cliche. Though a well-placed "freebird" at an inappropriate time can still be funny. (The first comment on the linked page, about the dude yelling it at Mamma Mia ... That's comedy!)

And as to which song is better, Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse summed it up best: "life is just too f***ing short to hear or play Freebird."

What? Maynard's bloody embouchure, or yelling Freebird at him? He was pretty awesome in concert, though by the 80s he was sorta drunk and coked out. When he came to do a workshop at my high school (I think in 1977) his band was doing lines backstage!
