schindler's list and saving private ryan are 2 of the best movies ever made. neither fun to watch but hugely powerful stuff.
for the art of interpreting a story to screen, he is untouched.*
*m. whatever shamalmadingdong can't carry spielberg's jock.

Great list. Maybe with fewer entries: Orson Welles, Roman Polanski, Sergio Leone.

Oh Sergio, little else satisfies me more than Once Upon a Time in the West.

Speaking of epics, David Lean is becoming one of my favorites after having finally watched Doctor Zhivago. I had seen Lawrence of Arabia and loved it, but Zhivago is worlds beyond it.

David Lean also did the magnificent Bridge On The River Kwai. Besides the great Sir Alec Guiness, it also starred William Holden, who was in 2 films by excellent director Billy Wilder. The 2 films, that I know of are: Sunset Boulevard and one of my very all time favorites, Stalag 17.

Anything by Hitchcock will have me riveted for the full extent of the film. But my all time favorite director is Richard Linklater, a good ol' Texas boy. Before Sunrise was a great, great movie and his first trips into the mainstream with Dazed and confused and School of Rock were awesome too. Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly are two of the most innovative films of recent years. Sadly though Bad News Bears blew terribly.
but we all make mistakes, ever seen Spielberg's 1941?

Francois Ozon is easily the best living director. Although Almodovar comes close.

Digging up an old thread.
I second Almodovar.
Also, Inarritu.
