I've got no time for a full review today (as I work my ass off & listen to the every SF song from 2006) but I did get a chance to listen to this fight
My fave was Robots Do The Work followed closely by Glenn Case. Then 8 Legged Oedipus in third. Honorable mention to Cranial Biffida, BLT, Minty Handy, & Attention Seeking Luke.
Hey, sp00n, what program do you use for Cynthia. As you already know, i'm fascinated by TTS programs (as shown by my dear Nataly K).

Thank you for the review. From a mixing perspective, I can understand why you would think the songs are the same. It's a very templated process. But I am surprised that you think Glutton and Georgia's Hand sound the same musically. I'm not arguing it, I am just surprised. I wasn't expecting that.mico saudad wrote: Cranial Biffida The theatricality of the introduction and first minute are nice. You vary the music from time to time through the song, but it still has a pretty uniform feel throughout that I think you could overcome with some more work. You have a lot of tools going for you (some nice drums at places, compelling voices), maybe drop the rest of the music out besides those and then bring the rest in to get some contrast. I don’t feel this way now but I worry that I may end up feeling like I’m listening to the same song every week…

Ok, here we go. First I want to say that all of the Georgia's Hand entries are awesome. Everyone has their own style and sound which is my favorite part.
Cranial Biffida - Great movie music. I'm not sure what's sampled and what's original, not that it matters because it sounds cool. Would have been a great score for the movie "Hostel"
Cynthia Size and @eclectic spOOns - I actually liked this song. I am not the type to listen to electronica, but after finding out that Cynthia is a computer, I'm impressed. It's a good song and done very well.
Eight Legged Oedipus - I really liked this song and it is in my top five and moving to the top very fast. I'm not sure if it's the continuous riff running
through the song, or the comfortable groove I get from listening to it. It kind of has a "Cake" like quality without sounding like a style rip. That chainsaw guitar when you say "better let me steer dear" is very cool. This song is original and it's the reason I fell in love with song fight in the first place.
The Endless Attention Seeker - This song is also in my top five. Every time I hear a song by Luke, I find myself dashing to "Ye Olde Lyric Archive" to make sure I heard him correctly, and much to my horror and delight, I find I heard him perfectly. The vocals remind me of some early Frank Black bootlegs that I'd pick up around town, but with a true folksy groove and cool lyrics that sound like they come from a guy that could be a "B" movie critic if the song writing thing doesn't pay the bills.
Flypaper Orchestra - Front porch Hillbilly moonshine music. If you would have added a track blowing a jug or blowing a jug with some 21st century effect on the jug track, it would have been perfect. I liked it.
Glenn Case - Once again, an awesome entry in my top five. One of those songs that you like the second you hear it. Flows nicely, great bouncy melody and excellent recording. The lyrics are a simple story and easy for the general audience to relate to. I really liked this song.
Jacobe Lynn - Very nice song, good guitar playing and vocals. Very straight forward song with no surprises, just a good song in it's purest form.
Melvin - As usual, a great entry that can stand next to any song in your genre and it's also in my top 5. The lyrics start out sounding like an Elvis
Costello, but then goes into a nice harmony chorus that made me forget about Elvis and pulled me in. But the guitar is what I really liked best in this song. Nice, simple and full of feeing. Nice vocals, I like the way this song was recorded and mixed. Great job.
Mico Saudad - Excellent piano. I had to crank up the volume to hear it, but no big deal because when I burned all the songs, my Nero program equals all the volumes. Anyway, I really like how you mixed your voice because it's a nice contrast with the piano. With your name and sound, I'm picturing a lounge lizard. Very cool tune, I like it.
Minty Handy - This is a very cool song. I LOVE the straight up voice and ukulele. The light keys way in the back was a nice touch, but I would have liked this song regardless. I recommended this song to the members at my site. As some may have noticed, I love music in it's purest form and this song fits the bill. Great Job Minty.
Native.- At first I thought, damn, another cute voice, what's up with that? Then I quickly noticed you're the Thousand dollar girl. What can I say, I fall hard for a cute voice. Plus this again is a song in it's purest form so it automatically ranks as a keeper in my book. I think I even heard you turning pages and move a little and bump the mic, I LOVE that! So real and honest, something this world could use more of. I don't know how our voices would match up, but I'd like to do a duet someday, and your voice is what I want wrapped around mine. Great lyrics and song.
Robots Do The Work - This song is also in my top 5. I like the hard left and right panned guitar and voice on the intro, great technique to perk up the listeners ears and get'um ready for the song to kick in. The guitar work is cool and the melody is catchy and easy to like. You did a great job on this song.
Ryan Rickenback - Great song. Nice voice with great sustain that stays in key, very good, nice guitar playing. I would have like to hear the backup vocal from a different voice to make yours stand alone and be more unique. But I really liked this song.
Thank Glennny For The Frisbee - Another well written song. This is a very radio friendly song and can stand up to anything I hear on my local alternative station. The voice is happy, the guitar work is talented, the drums keep the songs energy high and in good time. But it's the guitar that puts this song in my keeper list, not to take anything away from the rest of the song, it's just that I'm a guitar guy first and when I hear a guitar that I like, I tend to focus on it for the first several times I listen to it. I could learn a lot from the style if I'd let down my guard once in a while and allow myself to try new things. Great recording and well done all around.
Those Meddling Kids - Every song I've heard from you guys since I've been here have been awesome. The lyrics are sung in a very important manner which makes me not even wonder what you're singing about, I just figure it's very serious because you're very serious about what you're saying. The added sounds running in the background seem to be proportioned just right and not over done like I hear so often from other bands. I like the bridge in this song because I'm big on adding changes to songs that sound like it could be a different song. This song is well organized and recorded really well to top it all off. Great job.
Wagaco - Without a doubt, this song is in my top five. I know I've got around 10 in my top five, but I really like what I heard on this fight. I laughed when you said, "play it Paco" and he played about 3 more notes, lol. Gave me a great idea for a future song, I'll say "take it Paco" and he plucks one note, LOL. But I really liked this song more than the past Wages songs I've heard. At first I thought it was because of the cool guitar work, but it was more than that. The song has a real original format and vocal style with a familiar feel, so it made it easy for me to like. Overall, I really like this song and I've been playing it non stop for the past few days. Good writing Wages. Great job guys.
Ziplief - I really like this song and it is in my top 5 also. Well performed. I find myself listening to the Zipline entries quite often because I'm a local music lover and I spend a lot of my time checking out local bands. I'm that guy that buys every bands demo CD when I go to the shows. Although studio music has it's place, it can be very sterile and artificial. I look at music the same way I look at boobs. I always say, fake boobs are fun to look at and really fill out a bikini nice, but at the end of the day, I want to play with a nice pair of God given fun bags. I like to hear recorded music that is as close to real life as possable. I see "leaf" in the name this week and I know members here seem to talk highly of him, so I'm guessing that would be the reason for the cleaned up sound on this one. But either way, I REALLY like this song and it is a good recording. Great job guys, this is a well done song.

Billy,
Thanks for the kindness!, minor correction: 1st off I spelled Leif wrong should be L-E-I-f, 2nd, this is a different Leif than the Leaf of Songfight fame. I've been dying to get this Leif in on the whole songfight thing, I just love his voice and he can crank out tunes. This song was a bit of a reunion for us, we used to write tunes and jam 3 years ago. Since then we both got married and had kids, was really great to play with him again.
Everyone: I can't get enough of this fight, spent last night playing board games listening to the fight repeatedly, AGAIN.
My only complaint is I miss Paco's zany vocals!!! (The Wages collab is awesome though)

+++ Groovin' intro. Nice punk pick-up. Good vocal expression +++

I've said it before, but now it's for sure, best review ever! If it weren't for Paco, this would have been "just another Wages entry". I really feel that the credit is due to Paco.Billy's Little Trip wrote:Wagaco - Without a doubt, this song is in my top five. P.S. No, I did NOT tell people to come to songfight and vote. I sure would hate to get unfair votes, vote spamming and all. I did, however, plug songfight as the reason for the song, so anyone serious about it will venture over. That is, if anyone ever read my blog, but that's another story altogether.

Ah man, a jug would be awesome. I need to find a jug. Anyways, thanks for the comments. I'm glad someone other than me enjoyed it. I wasn't sure how everyone would respond to this due to its sloppier than usual delivery, high room noise and noodly, improvised guitar and ukulele.Billy's Little Trip wrote:Flypaper Orchestra - Front porch Hillbilly moonshine music. If you would have added a track blowing a jug or blowing a jug with some 21st century effect on the jug track, it would have been perfect. I liked it.
BLT: This pretty great. Catchy and rocking – nice. After being digital for so long, I kind of like hearing that slightly warbly tape sound again too.
Cranial Biffida: Sonically, the heaviness is cool, but musically, I can’t get into this at all. It seems schlocky to me.
Cynthia + Eclectic: You two make a good pair. This is pretty cool. Also somewhat hypnotic.
8-Legged Ode: Beats, guitars and vocals all sound great, but the song never really lifts or goes anywhere, so it gets pretty boring.
Endless: Really like the vocals and lyrics. Is this the song someone compared to the Violent Femmes? The comparison is apt.
Flypaper: mumble mumble mumble
Glenn Case: Your stuff is consistently amazing. I hope you’re not insulted when I say this track reminds me of the Goo Goo Dolls. It’s pretty much perfect radio-pop. I hope it’s not too late for you to sell nine million records.
Jacob Lynn: I like the dry, unaffected vocal delivery on this. Good song, I’d say.
MC P. Denyer: That pitch shifter not only sounds irritating, it totally obscures whatever lyrics you might have written. I’d re-think that move.
Melvin: I have to admit, when I was recording this, I thought it was going to be super-awesome. Yet the end result seems a bit flat. Another sign of age.
Mico: Damn, I like this a lot. The melody and vocals totally grab me. The piano and slappy bass are combined in a very novel fashion. At 2:03, I want you to drop a super-heavy beat onto this and rock it out for the next minute or two. Actually, I feel like downloading this and imposing my will on it right now. Don’t try to stop me…
Minty: Jaunty, that’s what this is. Mixed with a bit of cute. Not bad – I like it okay.
Native: This is not at all jaunty, but it’s extremely cute. I try not to objectify women and all that, but I’d like to have you inside a tiny glass case mounted on a little brass pedestal, and keep you on my nightstand. You know, respectfully speaking.
Robots etc: My mom still thinks Elvis is the best singer ever, and I still think early-to-mid-90s rock is the best rock ever. Fuckin-A, dude(s)!
Ryan R.: Yikes, that’s some hot singing. Very good performance, though the GnG format rarely excites me.
Thank G for the F: Another great melody from the Fris, and it’s great to hear it backed up with some really awesome guitar stuff. Speedy guitarmonies! Yes! This is great. It’s an obscure SF fact that I also turned a Frisbee song into a rock spectacular one time a while back. What a pleasure - you write great songs.
TMK: Werd. This track takes some great turns, and as usual, I think your vocals are easily among the best in every fight. By the way, you’ve picked up another fan recently – my wife thinks you’re hot. Just don’t let her see your face. Harhar.
Wagaco: Yeah, this is The Most Appropriate Collab of 2006. Actually, the way Paco spits out the riffs and licks, I could see him becoming the official session dude of SongFight. Wages – I think it’s great that you’ve found a match for your singing chops. Good job, fellas.
Zip: This sounds like the music teenagers were listening to when I was 6 years old, and I’m really starting to dig these sounds – the chorusy (I think?) guitar, the smooth vocals, the extended solo section. This is totally sweet. A+.
Cranial Biffida: Sonically, the heaviness is cool, but musically, I can’t get into this at all. It seems schlocky to me.
Cynthia + Eclectic: You two make a good pair. This is pretty cool. Also somewhat hypnotic.

Fodroy,
I really enjoyed your song! However, I have to say that I put it at the end of the playlist. That doesn't mean that I've listened to it any less than the others, I haven't. For me, where it defaults alphabetically disrupts a certain flow of the fight. It strikes me as being like a hidden track. I didn't enjoy it at first, but once I made the playlist change it really grew on me. I dig it!

It's funny how you said dated or "retro?" hahaha. It reminds me of a story I just made up.EightLeggedOedipus wrote:Billy's Little Trip

I went to the PhilHarmonic Amphitheater to hear the orchestra. Everything they played was so dated. So I went up to the front right as they finished playing a Mozart piece and I said,....hey orchestra dudes, you guys are so dated, it's time to move on, my home slices! The whole theater went so quiet that you could have heard a pin drop. Then as I turned to leave, one of the Chinese violin players stood up and yelled, "It's Retro..Bitch!"
I was all >>

Anyway, as the security guys were pulling all the violin players off of me, it all started making perfect sense. Don't fuck with violin players, those fuggers are pretty good with a bow.

i'll make my point out with this little story.
A young guy from Alberta moves to Vancouver and goes to a big "everything under one roof" department store looking for a job.
The Manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?"
The kid says "Yeah. I was a salesman back in Alberta ."
Well, the boss liked the kid and gave him the job. "You start tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did. His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the store was locked up, the boss came down. "How many customers bought something from you today?
The kid says "one".
The boss says "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 customers a day. How much was the sale for?"
The kid says "$101,237.65".
The boss says "$101,237.65? What the heck did you sell?"
The kid says, "First, I sold him a small fish hook. Then I sold him a medium fishhook. Then I sold him a larger fishhook.
Then I sold him a new fishing rod. Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast, so I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him a twin engine Chris Craft. Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4x4 Expedition."
The boss said "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a BOAT and a TRUCK?"
The kid said "No, the guy came in here to buy Tampons for his wife, and I said, "Dude, your weekend's shot. You should go fishing."

Georgia's Hand reviews
8LO: I think the 'poopy demo' suffix is unneccesary, we know you've only had a week or so to do this and in spite of that this sounds pretty damn good. The intro guitar made this sound a bit like Tortoise, then as soon as the song kicked in it slips comfortably into the Beck-style indie-hop you seem to have a knack for. This is cool, and I would probably keep it but it doesn't seem to stray from the main refrain at any point and after 4 minutes I have most definitely had enough. All the parts are good though, just not enough ideas I think, it needs a middle or something.
Everybody look at Luke: I liked this one, I think I prefer your sweet folky stuff (bad cat, stone palace etc) over the blues action but this one is cool, I like the structure and stuff, the way the sections lead well into each other and crescendo with the 'eat out of her hand' bit. I went back and listened to your robot baby entry earlier, I missed that fight but I'm glad I went back cos that song is really good too.
Frank & Glennny with a Frisbee: This is so unfair, first 8LO, then Luke and now this. How the hell am I ever gonna get a look in? Frisbee rarely if ever has songs that are anything less than lovely and with such a strong arrangement behind him I fail to see how you can lose this. It also brings to mind the Melvin mix of Shoot for Tuesday; I think that was a better song fundamentally, and mel's production and dynamics were great, but this has a hidden depth. There's definitely more to get into on repeated listens which don't necessarily hit you at first. It's more like Pinback. So, great song, definitely a keeper, slightly more head music than heart music compared to other TFTF songs. I'd like to hear more from this collab.
Cranial Biffida: Nice sample at the beginning, I might as well admit right now that there's no way I'm ever going to get excited over music this gothic, but that said it seems pretty well done and there is definitely a lot to keep me interested here. I like the way it shifts effortlessly between the sections and doesn't dwell on a part for too long. The atmospheric sounds to the trick, and the vocals do sound like they're sung by a dark overlord of a shadowy realm, so if that's what you were going for (thinks to himself, what the hell else could you have been going for?) then it worked. Intelligibilty issues on the vox but then that would be me missing the point of the genre really wouldn't it. good effort.
@eclectic Sp00ntangs: Man, Cynthia really sounds like Nico on this track, and also reminds me of some of LonBobby's vocals. Also the vocals remind me a lot of Slowdive and MBV, there are parts when the meter is a bit dodgy, just odd syllables sound a bit out of place, a minor quibble. This has quite a shoegazy feel overall really, very ethereal and I love all that, the sounds you use are sweet, but minimalist so there's plenty of space. The drums are persistent, and I would have varied a bit myself, but honestly they don't annoy me at any point.
Zipleif: Right from the beginning I thought this had R.E.M. written all over it, It sounds like it could have been lifted straight from the 'Reconstruction' sessions. It's probably the chorus on the guitar. This is a lot more rigid and focused than the Zipline stuff, what with your choruses and whatnot and it's good. There are bits when it reminds me so much of the 80's I love it, but the thing that stops me from wanting to listen to this a lot is probably the vocals, or not even the vocals but the lyrics, or maybe a combination of both, and mainly in the chorus. They're not bad, but it's like they don't make sense, and they don't have to make sense but they should be nonsensical in a way that sounds good; I guess they sound like they were written because you had a chorus to write and not because you really wanted to sing those words, know what I mean? and the vox are a tiny bit hammed-up for me, personal taste. anyway, good song, probably a bit too long but I like it anyway.
Ryan Rickenbach: don't hear you much round here these days. Always a welcome addition to a fight though, you tend to provide well written songs that are also well sung and this is no exception. Very hooky but not in an irritating way and I like the overall mood. I like the way you rhyme, sometimes it sounds like you've not done it but then you slip it in there subtly on the next line. The thing I really love about this is the arrangement (not praise often directed at gngs) It's like it was a conscious decision rather than just using what you had lying around, the quiet ride in the background adds a really nice bit of swing, and the layering of the vox at the end is a great dynamic addition that actually makes the song go somewhere rather than just sound nice and stop. Keeper
Mico Suadade: You're name reminds me of the Mice Parade album 'obrigado saudade', dunno if there's any connection, but I love that album. I'm gonna need to ride the level a bit for this one. Yeah, I can dig this, it's got soul and I like some of the plinky-plonking. Overall though it feels like a jam or the beginnings of a song and the fade-out was where you ran out of ideas. With some development this could be cool.
denyer: I know, the lyrics are the only thing worth listening to about my tracks, I'll make them completely unintelligible! oh balls. hows about a non-pitch-shifted remix? yeah? yes. no
Mikey: I prefer you jangling than harmonising but hey. The bit in the 2nd verse, where you say 'Georgia's heart', what's going on there? maybe my ears are being weird, sounds like 2 takes pasted together, forget it. Aah, now there's the chorus we've all been waiting for. I'm gonna need to take some time to let the whole song sink in a bit, but I'm starting to like this, I don't think I'm listening to it in the best environment (that could be said of all these songs) but I think this is worth more effort (on my part), It's probably just the right tempo for walking down the street and I can totally see myself getting weird looks singing those backing vocals. I look forward to the day that happens (with this song, it's happened shitloads of times with other songs).
reviewer fatigue....back soon
