Gray, or is it Grey? (prefight)

Billy's Little Trip - I have tried many different beat making programs (Acid Pro, Beatcraft, etc...) but I found them to be too hard for me to use to create a really good beat from scratch, at least when I only have a week to write the song and the music and record it all. People have discussed making beats in various forum threads here, but most of those I would not consider real hip-hop beats. They are boring, strange sounding, or repetative. That is fine for creating an odd sounding song, but not for one like you would hear on the radio.

Masterhyde's beats on the other hand always sound great though, and so did the beat from Beefy (I assume DJ Snyder made the beat) , but I don't know if Masterhyde creates his own beats or has somebody in his band do them. If he creates those beats himself and wrtites the whole song in a week, he must be very advanced.

My point is creating good hip-hop beats is a very specialized thing, and usually the rapper/songwriter does not create the beat. In the future I will just hook up with other songfighters to write the beats for me, and do the song jointly with them. But, for now I want to play around with my new Casio keyboard to see what songs I can make from it.

Unless Casio's keyboards have changed a lot since the one that I got in high school, you won't find a way.

Mine doesn't have any concept of key velocity. A note is either off, or as loud as it can get. This applies to the drum sounds as well as the other instruments.

The drum/bass/chord patterns built into mine are cheesy. Most of them have names like "disco" and "rap" that sound nothing like the type of music they're named after. Not even like an 8-bit Nintendo version of those genres of music, even.

Mine has no "808" bass drum sound. That's a showstopper right there, innit?

I saw a new Casio at Target the other day. It did not appear to be more advanced than mine in any way, except for having more demo songs. My keyboard only has one, Paula Abdul's "The Way That You Love Me".

Jeff Robertson - Right, the Casio's "hip-hop" drum beats are really just pop beats. Funny you mention Target, because that is where I was when I decided to buy the Casio. I was there waiting for my wife to finish shopping and saw it and decided I wanted one. But, since there was a Guitar Center in the same shopping plaza, I walked over there and bought a little more advanced version with more beats.

Eric, I just saw this about 5 minutes ago. I not only programed an 8 count hip hop type drum loop, but I also took the same four tracks in this loop and added four more tracks with crap on my drum machine I'll never use but a hip hopper might.
...oh and uploaded both to esnips and posted them here in around 5 minutes.

If I were a hip hopper, I'd do cool fuzz filters and delay to these and change them around here and there through the song and use them as a base to layer other junk and nursery rhymes over.

Billy's Little Trip: Those beats are good, but they still remind me more of a rock beat than a hip hop beat. I think because as you said, it needs stuff added to it. But, that is my point. Without keyboards or a pounding bass rhythm or something else added, it sounds somewhat boring. It is a beat, but not really the full background music to a song. Layering effects on it like you suggested might change it enough to be what I would need, but no matter what I would do it still seems like it would pale in comparison to a real hip-hop beat like the one I used at

Also, the biggest problem I have is doing the chorus part. I can make a basic drum type beat like you did (it would take me much longer than 5 minutes probably) but making a different sounding chorus part is a lot harder for me, using beat software.

I was just giving you an example. But your song you linked up yah^^^ is the same thing as the beats I posted. Your "pimp my sleigh" song has a base back beat with bass synths over it.

You just like this weeks title because the first and second word have your name in them. Plus if you switch the first letter around from each word, you get Ray Gaymbo.
