I thought it was a good idea. Or at least, it wasn't a bad idea. I voted for myself. Twice.

That's what's awesome and terrible about the Internet: you can do anything you want and there will always be people who think it's a good idea. I'm just not one of those people
this time. Maybe next time!

I think maybe that would be better phrased "you can do anything you want and there will always be people who think it's a
bad idea", at least when it comes to the boards here.
And I wasn't accusing you guys of elitism, I was honestly using that as an example of people who are friends doing something fun together. There isn't and shouldn't be any obligation to try to involve the whole world. I don't really see how the activity on the boards is really all that different.

Technically, no, because this poll is based on msgboard username, not IP. Your computer nerd friend would need to make a crapload of useraccounts instead... not all that different...

OK, I would like to "officially" change this to a
Pro. If someone actually wanted it so bad that they made 35 user accounts, well hell, just give them the darg garn win.
Thanks Heuristics, you are always up on ways to beat the man.

I think I'm worth repeatingrepeating. Exit polls were a neat idea when we started doing them. Somebody would have to willfully ignore the meaning of "the true winner of songfight" in order to say that a board poll determines the true winner of songfight. Because the vote is what determines the true winner of songfight (except for Prayer for Pancakes where everybody was a winner except for Attack of the Show).
On the other hand, there are people willing to ignore the defining characteristic of a songfight winner even without this poll, so they exist. But it's not this idea's fault.
Life philosophy lesson: Each thing should be equated to what it is. The results of this poll are the results of some of the board readers voting in a system where they can see who is winning as the week goes by, where friendflooding is technically difficult. The results of the vote each week are a tally of all the votes from various IPs that picked a song and clicked vote, presumably after listening to some (and often all) of the songs in the fight. Both are interesting. One, very strictly, determines the winner of the songfight.
Wistful devolution: Knowledge is neat. More data is rigorous and good! Knowing what a thing is can be neat too. It's sad that people might start equating, overvaluing or devaluing this poll and the main page vote in any combination. They're different things.

Hm, the poll results so far are not at all what I expected, interesting...

Seriously. Considering that this is a rarified poll of only the elite board users and not those autonomous flood-friends, I expected to be winning hands down.

concrete proof that everyone just votes for themselves.

This is great, now some of us can feel bad all week instead of waiting until vote day comes around.

Yeah, I completely forgot about the poll results being available to you as soon as you vote in. That doesn't quite match up with what I had in mind, but to get around that I'd have to host the poll somewhere else, I think. That would probably make it even less likely that anybody would bother with the poll, which, considering the significant negative reaction so far, might make the whole thing a total wash. Oh well...

HaHaHa!!
...Hey, I just noticed that someone voted for me, woot!
Damn, I need to pick one, but it keeps changing day to day. There are so many good songs this week.

Hey now, that's not the Lunk that stood on his box a week ago shouting for equality. Also, I think there have been just as many positive posts as the negative.

I voted for you this week, BLT. I dug your song a lot, and it stuck in my head a bit more than the other ones in the fight that I also really liked. It was a tough choice, though, there are lots of good songs this week. Maybe the poll results reflect that? Who knows. Either way the results will be interesting, even if they're not what I expected.

Unless I'm mistaken, the "true winners" of songfights are those fighters that get useful feedback (and got motivated to write in the first place), and those visitors/fighters that find new music that they like. Nothing about the voting will ever change that.
Or am I pulling back the curtain too far?

this is also a weird fight, with a handful of really good songs and no one standing out above the rest.

I couldn't agree more........well, actually I could, but then I'd be a more whore. But this week has been so tough for me, because each day I hear something in each song that fits my mood at that part of the day. Some of the mellow ones really hit my "getting ready to start my day, and the sun is shining and it's a beautiful day" side, but some of the wild rockers hit that, "work day is done, on the way home" side. Great week for good music at the SF in my opinion.

Well, Results are up and this appears to map basically not at all to the actual results.

Well, it's probably not what anybody expected. It's definitely a different take on the fight than the real votes, and it doesn't seem like any kind of threat to the real votes, either, considering the much much smaller participation. I guess in the end it's probably only as meaningful as the real results, which are in turn only as meaningful as someone wants them to be.
One thing it made me think about is how many people enter only once, and win. Of the 1883 artists in the archive, a full 1200 have only entered once (with that same band name)! Sadly I don't have an easy way of figuring out how many of those one-offs have 100% victory records. I do know some of the one-off winners are from regulars, like the Tinski Robotnik song. Anyway, I'm curious if Shael Riley will return and continue winning? Or if he'll take his victory and run? Or if he'll come back to mixed results? It'll be interesting to see.

I can't quite put my finger on it as to why, but I think I like this poll better than the real one this week for some reason.
Shael Riley's song was "ok", but I think the Hell Yeahs got robbed.
