In my opinion, Michael Jackson best represents the sound (and progression) of the 1980s.

The last album of the 1970s was London Calling by the Clash. The first album of the 1990s was Nevermind by Nirvana*. In between these two milestones was the musical wasteland we call "the 80s". It was horrible. I was there.

Luckily, there was a small renaissance of Auustralian pub rock in the early to mid 80s, hence the soundtrack of those times generally consisted of:
East by Cold Chisel
Mars Needs Guitars by the Hoodoo Gurus
Human Frailty by Hunters & Collectors
Gossip by Paul Kelly and the Coloured Girls
10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 by Midnight Oil, and
Sunnyboys.

If you went to the more arty-farty parties, you may have also heard Born Sandy Devotional by The Triffids and Tallulah by The Go-Betweens. (there may have been other music - but I have blocked the bad stuff out of my head)

No music of any significance was recorded outside of Australia in these years. The only possible exceptions may be Life's Rich Pagent by REM and The Smiths.



Crimes from the 1980s which remain unpunished:
Puffy shirts
Big permed hair
Dire Straits
Designer stubble

(*I would accept arguments that that distinction may alternativley go to Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth or Dolittle by The Pixies)
