ha, i can relate to the road warrior roy. many, many times i've pulled a similar long drive for the purpose of snowboarding at lake tahoe.

yosemite is best in the late fall. indian summer time. no crowds and gorgeous weather. tuolumne meadows is a much better summer option, and has the beauty of yosemite valley but it's about 20 degrees cooler because you are so much higher up (9000 feet elevation vs. 4000 feet or so in the valley). and it's only an hours drive from the valley up tioga pass.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm in SF for a week, and then possibly forever.

I'm staying with my sister who is right next to golden gate park which is also nice and central to many of the wonderful suggestions people have given me, and also it looks like just meeting up with people is already filling out my week.

When I go to a place I just like to be there. Like, I get up, eat breakfast, do some work on my laptop, go get some lunch, do some more work, maybe a little practical shopping, find a place to have a few beers, eat dinner, go find a place to listen to some jazz, go to bed, rinse, repeat.

In other words, I like to just see what it would be like to live there. I prefer NOT to do ANYTHING out of the ordinary, i.e. tourist oriented crap, unless I am going to be there for a very long time.

the other QOTD:

Normally, I drink beer in my spare time. When not drinking beer (or sometimes WHILE drinking beer), I administer songfight.org, ambrotoons.com, mightyoctothorpe.com, workshop3d.com/stargate/, etc. That includes writing some automation code here and there, adding more localization features to stargate, etc. When there is a studio available, I practice or record (while drinking beer). I am also writing a book, "Beer and Salad Days", which is a diet book, which includes a lot of research on beer and the drinking of same. Most of the time these days, however, I am building a house in my spare time. That makes me sweat, and I tend to drink a lot of beer to keep cool.

afterthought: actually, that is the stuff I do in real life. In my spare time, I try to fit in a little bit of the work that I get paid to do.

I like to go to old and familiar places and get drunk.

PS, that Beer And Salad diet is a vegetarian life style I could easily embrace, as long as I can eat steak, ribs and chicken when I'm drunk.

I'd rather not hear about "your salads" lmao!

I'm sure Spud's tongue in cheek reference is probably more along the lines of growing up drunk or something along the lines of learning while intoxicated. But I like the thought of it being more along the lines of a drunk vegan always falling off the meat wagon, lol.
I guess I'll have to wait for the book to come out, so that someone will make it into a movie so I can watch it. :P

In my spare time, I:

- write a webserial called Septemberian (see thread in Collaboration for details and to help me out)
- play videogames
- play music (including a noise band w/ my kids called The Yellow Crayon Is Missing)
- customize action figures
- play games with the kids
- do stuff with the girls
- lots o' crossword puzzles
- watch pro-wrestling

I knew it was a real thing from something I read somewhere on one of his sites, I just didn't know that it was a diet.
Sounds a little like my marijuana and snickers diet. The trick is, you have to smoke the snickers and eat the weed. You get a killer sugar high, but the nougat totally plugs up the bong. 8)

Let me know when the DVD drops.
