Yeah, I'm looking for more range and sensitivity, for a broad range of applications. I'm going to be doing acoustic guitar (plus mandolin and uke), vocals, auxiliary percussion, a couple of wind instruments, and it'll probably see some use for drum overheads until I get the set of small-diaphragms (which might do better on the mando and certain vocals and whatever too). But for now, the limited frequency response of the PG58 is killing me. For whatever reason, I think it makes my kick drum sound really good, if I place the mic a certain way. Mind you, this is a bad-sounding kick drum. I think when it comes to audio engineering, two wrongs can indeed make a right.fluffy wrote:The V63m comes with a carrying pouch, and if you get the one without the shockmount it still comes with a regular microphone stand mount. The 990 does definitely come with a nicer set of accessories though, yeah. For a general-purpose recording mic, I'd say go with the 990.

This is way off topic, but I have no idea how to use the search function to find my answer. When and why did you stop recording? Perhaps more importantly, why aren't you famous? Aren't there any labels stalking you in the park?Puce wrote:When I start recording again (aka never) it will be an AT4040.

Good lord. I've been on Songfight for over 3 years, and when I started, I had crap gear, but I've put a huge portion of my income into developing a kickass gear closet. Some of you guys I've known the whole time HAVEN'T BOUGHT SHIT. Sven is a very notable exception. It's 2007 guys, get a condenser. Jesus.

Funny. Octothorpe used to have a V63m before fluffy got here. It was stolen in the whole studio break-in thing. We got the 990 after that to replace it, and I really like it. The shock-mount is a real visual stimulator. The more professional-looking the setup, the better Mad Dog sings (or whatever you call it).

So, what exactly are you trying to say here?Spud wrote:Funny. Octothorpe used to have a V63m before fluffy got here. It was stolen in the whole studio break-in thing.
I use a Rode NT3 primarily.
I used the MXL990 before that but it broke.
My other one is an AKG C 535 EB which is used in tandem with the Rode for guitar recording.
I have a really old Shure SM57 which I should just use sometime. It's been silent for about 15 years.

All I have is an MXL 2001 courtesy of Ken (thanks Ken!) and a couple SM57s. It's easier to make due without a lot of mics when you don't need to record a drum kit, and also when you don't really care that much. (And don't really record that much. I think we're not the only folks with lingering Nur Ein burnout...)

What kind of gear did you have when you started? The Sober Irishman wrote:I've been on Songfight for over 3 years, and when I started, I had crap gear, but I've put a huge portion of my income into developing a kickass gear closet.
As most of you know (from my previous whiny self), when I started submitting, I just had a computer mic. Now I've got a pretty decent set of mics. Buying them all at once was a poor choice though.
