I don't know, I copied 'em from Amazon.com. *shrug*
It's OK, I was just funnin' on his tendency to replace "you" with "U" and so forth. He didn't start doing that until later in his career.

I thought about a Prince coverfight where the winner would be the first one to get a cease and desist notice. But I like this idea better.

If the dude feels so strongly about this sort of thing, and y'all think he's worthy of at least a little bit of respect, why not accept his wishes?

Because now and then it is much more fun to parody such behavior.

Because I think the music industry currently has more than it's share of lawyers, money-hungry record execs, and greedy artists. It is also my opinion that there are not nearly enough musicians that make their craft for the love of creating music.

Because Mr. Purple's attitude about copyright is but one example of what is wrong with the music industry in it's current state.

ROCK!

But wait, bzl, they ARE repecting his wishes. They are doing original songs, not covers! They point is that he really shouldn't have a problem with it, and if he does, he really is over the top. It's a test, see...

I could not have put this any better.

These are going to be original songs based on previous song titles. As of now I don't believe you can copyright a song title.

If we receive cease and desists on the original compositions that come about as a result of this project, it will be further proof that the lawyers in charge are not paying attention, or that Mr. Purple is a bigger control freak than we think he is.

ROCK!

Are you going to make pages with (for instance) the best of each title, all arranged as an 'album', with the album title being the Prince album title? Because that would be frikkin' awesome, and I'd be into that.

This comes so close to asshole-baiting that I can't think of another word for it :)

I had considered this very thing, but we haven't fully discussed how we would implement a voting system yet, or if it would be necessary. On the plus side, it would certainly give people a reason to want to make the best entry so it could be on the "winner by vote" mix.

Keep in mind, this whole silly project was conceived yesterday, and the majority of the planning has happened today.

At the very least there will DEFINITELY be a page where you can listen to all of the entries, and make a decision on your own favorite mix of the titles.

ROCK!

Voting would be great!

A suggestion that will help you get at least one tune for each title: keep a running tally of which songs have been turned in at the beginning of the thread. I would love to check every few days to see what hasn't been done... or even what has been done the least. Ya know, 50 people may do "Purple Rain", but only 2 "*some other song*", so I'd be down with writing a tune for some other song. :)

Oh, and I'll submit as many tunes as I can every month! Great idea.

The voting thing is cool, win or lose, because we all seem somewhat competitive.
The losers may very well be the winners in this fight if Mr. Nelson decides to sue.

I fancy "For You" as a title, in case people are filling in the gaps.

30+ days... 9 titles... I'm leaning towards... (optimistic bastard that I am, and completely, utterly, absolutely ignoring Nanowrimo staring me in the face for that very same month)

The whole damned list.

Hmmm... can I kill two birds with one stone?

BTW... need I actually verbally say "if anyone need vocals to do any songs, just ask me, I'm down with the sickness"?

A good argument for including the word "Prince" in your MP3 tags somewhere, along with the song title being a Prince song title is that those crazy kids in Japan love to scour these internets for MP3s. I get thousands of hits from whacky Japanese search engines for my covers.

Here's October so far (over 6,500 site refers from Japanese MP3 search sites such as mp3.baidu.com):

Big Prince fan, I may just try to do this.

Out of curiosity, other than his recent "request" to YouTube to remove all unauthorized videos of his concerts, can somebody point to some evidence that Prince is obsessed with copyrights and hates it when anyone covers his songs? I have an old tribute CD by Bob Belden, called "When Doves Cry" and in looking around for info on that, I found listings for a lot of other presumably legal Prince covers. I know that he is weird about a bunch of stuff, but when I search on Prince Copyrights, I'm not seeing a bunch of articles about him trying to keep people from covering his songs...

Thanks,
Charles (KA)

It's a combination of things, actually.

Mr. Purple doesn't just go for the small battle, he goes all the way. Whether it's changing his name to a symbol and writing Slave on his face and performing with a mask on; or going after YouTube, Google, European soccer leagues; or not letting Weird Al doing parodies of his songs. It's Mr. Purple's prerogative to do so and we respect that. This project came out of a desire to parody the overblown nature of the whole thing. It's not protest, it's parody. And a playfully mischievious desire to see what will happen.

To be clear, Prince can't prevent Weird Al or anyone from doing parodies of his songs. There is specific language in copyright law that allows this type of "work" (under the Fair Use clause). However, Weird Al, being the nice guy he is, generally doesn't do parodies unless he requests and receives the artists' blessing.

Yes - I heard an interview with Weird Al a while ago who said just that. And he does sound like a nice guy.

If you want to hear the interview (he was sitting in on "Get This" - a very funny Sydney radio show) - go here and listen to Podcast #63
