QOTD: Mac OSX. I learned mac as my first os in the early days and have stayed with it. I have also used windows a fair amount and at this point honestly feel the overall arrangement is a bit sleeker. I also think that the Unix shell makes solid as heck.

I don't believe there's anyone forcing you to 'upgrade' to Vista. (the reason I put the single quotes around 'upgrade' is because it's actually a pretty good way to make your computer run horribly. I know, I beta'd it and ran the release version for a couple months. Till some update detected that it was cracked and shut me down. I was almost used to my computer running slow, then I re-installed XP and it was like having a new computer again!)

Anyway, XP is so bugfixed/stable at this point, you'd be a fool to get Vista. And if you need a new computer, and you can only find ones with Vista pre-installed, don't buy from them, and tell them why. Vista is the new Windows ME, basically- a P.O.S.

Addendum: I guess I neglected to actually say anything that wasn't already said (I should read a thread before replying to it) so:

QotD: I prefer XP over anything else right now. I have several computers, including an old G3 Mac running OSX. It sits in the closet (much like many Mac users) where it's been for a long, long time. XP is a pain to update after a new install, (last time I did a clean restore, I had 160MB of critical updates waiting for me to download... I'd slipstream them if I could, but I only have the restore discs that came with the computer... including about 700 bullshit 'bundled' software abortions that I don't want on my computer... but that's a rant for another time) but once you get everything in it's right place it works like a dream, providing you're not an idiot who opens executable email attachments from unknown sources. Intel Macs are just PCs running a specialized unix now anyway... why pay the extra $$$? A while back, OSX86 was cracked to bypass the TPM authentication, and I tried it on my PC. I was not blown away. It was pretty much exactly like any modern linux distro I'd tried. Maybe with a prettier/gayer interface. So I have to ask- why do Mac users defend their platform so strongly?

I started using a computer around the time that windows 95 came out. Every time a new version came out, I bought a new computer that came with the latest version in the bundle. I'm about to by a new computer because vista came out, well, also my computer kila'bites. From the things I've heard about vista, I am in no rush. I have no problem waiting for them to work out the bug, and I'm sure they will. My only computer gripes are when I'm making either music or movies. If one of you were to say, you know, your computer will never freeze again while making music or movies if you switch to a Mac, I'd switch teams in a second and bring the f**king lube.

At risk of sounding like a bigger nerd than you, I have to say that a 3rd party PPC board running a fancy version of linux with an emulator for classic Amiga apps is *not* an Amiga. Amigas have Buster and Gary and Agnus and Denise and Paula and sometimes Alice to play with, what's YOURS have? HUH?!

I have XP on my desktop PC and Vista on my laptop.

I haven't really had any real problems with Vista other than getting used to it. It's been very stable.

And Sonar 6 on my laptop runs better than Sonar 4 on my desktop. I use the laptop for doing my music stuff.

I think I'm going to switch to a laptop for strictly my music. When I first started recording on the computer, I chose my desk top because I figured I need the HD room. I have already added an external HD, lol. I could do the same thing with a lap top, just plug in an external and achieve everything there.....cha!

Update: The folks over at Belmont computers claim that M$ is about to release an "update" that will seriously "Vista-fy" XP. They were not happy. I think I may turn off auto-updates. Are they smokin' crack, or is there any truth to this rumor?

I started off as a Mac-gal... (All the way back to the Apple II! And the IIGS! And then a mac classic) but I switched to Win2000 after having no end of problems with OS9 on a G3. (It used to belong to Art Alexakis! So maybe it was just a case of bad juju.)

I haven't looked back since switching... well, until now that Vista is looming. I really like XP. I also like that Windows machines are cheap and easy to upgrade. (Meaning that technically you shouldn't have to get a brand new machine every time a new OS comes out.)

Cartoonmonkey swears by the Amiga OS.

If I could get all my aps (ie Wacom tablet pressure sensitivity) to work in Linux, I'd consider going down that path to crazy town.

...unfortunately no one knew the "blowing" technique on the cartridges back in the TI days.

OS9 was the shittiest of the shitty. OSX completely reverses that. I always appreciated, but disliked, the Mac growing up, but when 10.1 came out, I switched to it - from Linux.

Well, sorry to disappoint, but I'm pretty much done with the OS wars. I say use whatever works for you. I wouldn't run mission critical systems on anything but Solaris on the big side, have had lots of luck with Macs running pretty heavy asset management systems and such, and hated having to reboot Windows servers every week. However, much of the video transcoding world is Win2003 server based, though some are now porting to Unix since Windows doesn't scale well at all.

There's an amazing company called Agnostic who makes grid transcoders and uses blocks of CPUs to attack very fine grained high res video processing. The code genius was comfy with Microsoft, so there it is. But they've had to build in themselves the error handling, memory management and disk management that sucks so bad in Windows environments and works so brilliantly in Solaris. They are porting to Solaris now, slowly.

In the end, it all just happens however it happens, right? UI is a personal thing and everyone has their hot spots. It's like national elections, the candidates really aren't all that different (at least they all are somewhat qualified in something), but we love whoever supports our main issues, and hate whoever rubs us wrong. It's natural.

So that's my wimpy answer. Aside from the fact that I still miss OS7. The reason I lean toward Macs is that they're designed for the things that most inspire me. Postscript is part of the OS. Graphics and audio were there from day one in 1984. But then they've fucked up with certain things along the way, too. So it's a lot of the "that's my people" thing going on. Which I guess is valid. Why fight it?
