I can see that this is definitely going to push the quality of the listening experience through the roof.

Yeah ... I think you nailed it there. I'd say - multiple titles, and post them all! :D

Just like the good ol' days! If there was a 2-title fight, I would be in without question ... it's really nostalgic. I'm pretty pumped for this now.

Well, my attitude toward competitions of this nature, even as it is quickly getting more conservative, remains controversial. But the reaction to my Purple Reign material has made an impression. Although my background suggests that "a bad song is better than no song," I will certainly do my best not to submit garbage.

This week, there will be multiple titles.
On the due date, we will randomly pick one for posting.

There were three titles per week when I showed up so I must be the ultra nOOb. The giant fights can be intimidating to listen to, but there were also some skimpy fights under the multi titles, no? I'd hate to have a good song (if I wrote one, that is) missed because it was in fight number 2 of 3, or whatever. But I guess there's no difference if nobody is listening to the giant fights anyway.

As far as titles go, I perhaps unhelpfully state that I like either the choice of titles or the forced to do this one/skip the fight scenario as well. Either way, more J$ please! :)

Maybe this time around there will be enough fighters to make this relevant.

Just adding my $0.02 : IF we do go this route, can we just make it two...not three titles?

I still like Spud's idea of posting three titles but only posting one. Ha. Awesome.

What I think would be the ultimate, would be added fight sections. As I said, I like the choice of the weekly'ish fight, as well as Purple Reign and other side fights. I think each section would need it's own Moderator, or this would become a full time job for the fightmasters.

Here are a few ideas to pick from:

Fight Discussions and Reviews

24 hour challenge - Once a week a title is given and you have 24 hours to complete a song. The songs are voted on through the week.

Weekly fights - This is our traditional fight. A title is given about ever week and you have about a week to complete a song.

Pick a title - Several tiles are given and the fighter can write to any one of the titles. Titles are given every two weeks. Voting is one week.

Monthly fights - A title is given on the 1st of each month and you have until midnight, the last day of the month to submit it. The voting poll one week from the time the songs are posted.

Cover fights - About once a month an album name by a famous group is given. The fighter can pick any song from said album to cover.

Seasonal fights - Create a song to fit the season. A title is given and the song challenge starts and is voted on before the start of the actual holiday they are written for. The winner is announced on said holiday.

Battle of the bands - Each song fighter will submit a song that they have previously recorded, at the beginning of each month. The songs will be voted on throughout the month period by a panel of judges with varying musical tastes and judged on several different categories. At the end of each quarter, the band with the most votes is the quarterly winner. At the end of the year, the four quarterly winners will then be voted on for the best of the year.

The writers guild - No music. Vote for your favorite song lyrics, short stories, poems, etc

Lick my riffs - This will be broken up into subsections. Each section is dedicated to a certain instrument or vocals. Every week, a musician has 30 seconds to do a solo with no other accompaniment. The musicians are voted on for the hottest riffs, solos and a cappella.

There would be some tweaking needed, but I think a few of these could be cool. I really like the idea of "Lick My Riffs" :P

the monthly fights you describe are already happening (albeit in a much more haphazard way) at tuneflow.com.
i think your ideas sound great in theory, but in reality i think it would dilute the functionality of songfight.
i still like the one title every ten or so days thing that has been going on.
if you don't like the title, write what you want and call it that.
check out the song catalog of the (horrible after gish) smashing pumpkins for examples of loads of songs that have no reference to the title in the lyrics.
i think if the other ideas you mentioned could be picked up by other people and made into webpages and a link page was made to all of them, it would both preserve the current songfight experience and allow the other concepts to develop more organically.
just my thoughts.

don't forget the Radiohead fights page for mcwino

edit: actually, i always thought it would be cool to have a counter in the "next week's fight" part of the front page that would track the number of submissions currently received for the upcoming fight. and maybe then if you click on it, you'd get to see a list of the submitters (perhaps simplified to be just the file names of the submitted mp3s). i understand that this is probably not time effective to program and update, but i still think it would be cool.

I have an idea!

Why don't we needlessly dilute the site with all kinds of added fights, features, and links and all kinds of junk so that we can take away from what the site was really all about.

Lets add quizzes and all kinds of neat stuff!

Lets water it down and keep on watering it down!

...

See...I think it has already been pointed out that you can write songs on your own you know...you don't have to actually be challenged. Keep the sidefights on the side ya'll ;-)

Thanks, Hoblit. I wanted to say something like that but couldn't figure out how without coming across like even more of an asshole than usual.

The main Song Fight site should remain Song Fight. Maybe a different fight structure would be okay but the multiple-title structure has been used in the past and worked well (while complex multiple-fight things seem that they'd have many of the same problems as the one-fight format while also making it WAY more work for Spud).

Sidefights are NOT the answer. There are three basic kinds of sidefight:

1. Cover an artist/genre/etc. - ANATHEMA TO SONG FIGHT

2. Write a song in a particular style - ALSO ANATHEMA TO SONG FIGHT

3. A different sort of structure for a traditional song fight (skirmish, purple reign, etc.) - okay but adds confusion and generally doesn't solve the main problem of making the main fights not so gargantuanly huge. Plus, things like skirmishes are short-term challenges which by their very nature do not affect the flow of a weekly contest.

Having a collection of sidefights is all well and good but Song Fight itself SHOULD NOT be turned into a collection of sidefights.

There are probably ways of adjusting a single-fight format to make it easier for people to listen/review (e.g. present a subset of the songs, or even make it Just Fine for people to review a selection or whatever), or the voting format could be fundamentally changed (like do a GarageBand-style "here's two songs, which one do you like better? okay now write a review for both of them") but either of those options will completely change the nature of Song Fight. A multi-fight format, however, does not (unless you end up with like 50 titles at once anyway but I think there's quite some time before the site gets THAT big).

I should mention, I am a go with the flow kind of guy, and I like to take whatever is presented to me, and creatively get the most out of it as I can.

All those ideas up there were after my second cup of coffee, and that's when my best ideas flow and I tend to get a bit wordy. Not that they were great ideas, or that they should even be implemented. I was just throwing out some ideas as if this was democracy or something.

I still like the 30 second solo fight idea. But I'm afraid that it would get boring as a regular thing. It probably should just be a once a year thing, like pumpkin pie.

Whoah Hoah... slow down there tiger, I wasn't pissing in YOUR corn flakes there guy. I had previously admitted that maybe a two title songfight might be ok. My post was simply stating that we don't wanna over do it. We don't need all the bells & whistles. I was just saying that if we make this change, lets K.I.S.S. (and make up? I love you Jack, in the worst way)

There are four very cool points of tension and anticipation that make SF special:
- when will the new title be posted?
- when will the new fight go up?
- who (or how many) will be in the fight?
- what will people say about my song?

Taking any one of these four away dilutes and diminishes the experience, and like a table losing a leg, the whole thing comes crashing down.
