Abom: It is a very very very good 4 minute song that lasted for 14 minutes. With that said. The vocal clipping could work for me with more of a muted effect on it. The guitar is very cool. I am a 60’s/70’s child, this is up my musical alley. The lyrics don’t do anything for me. 4 min grade A, real drums grade A, add length and overall use of 14 minutes of my life, Grade C.

Beowulf Kingsley I thing your vocal pitchy ness is disguised well. With that said. I love the music here. The guitars are very well played. The overall song is very listenable. As far as a song, not something I particularly like, but that’s just me. Seems to drone. Grade B.

The BeWells Josh? Wait… nope… The recording style is different. Vocals are making me strain to hear them. With that said. Musically beautiful. This stuff usually does great around here.
I find nothing wrong with it, just not my taste again. Great artist for that style though. Grade B.

Eight Legged Oedipus Nice wicked bas line. Rhythm thing is irritating. With that said. Nice vocal delivery. The cussing seems out of place. Great break. The lyrics don’t work for me. The guitar work at the end is nice. Grade C+

Feldspar needs drums badly. With that said. I like the song but it sound like something an Irish guy would write. I really like the break. Very good song. The delivery is not great and doesn’t work for me. Grade C+

Josh Woodward All we are is all we are. (Nirvana) Kind of reminds me of that. If I liked you style of music, I would probably be your biggest fan. It is almost not fair sometimes how good you are. Well, You get an A <- no plus, only because of the style and it’s purely my problem. 

Kamakura The drums don’t fit very well for me. With that said. Vocal delivery is boring. The piano and organ are very nice. The song overall is nice, I feel it needs some Oomph. Grade C

Level Nivelo I have no idea why I like this. It sounds like a carnival ride with lyrics that came out of a randomizer. I like it and could listen to it again. Any criticism above should be referred to this song as something I like. Hehe… I think I just like you used “icky.” Nope, it sounds like Sesame Street. That is it, Damn; I am such a child at heart! Grade B+

The Miasmatics Vocals are not real good. With that said. The song is not bad. I guess I am used to well produced songs getting my praise. I see the potential in this song though. As is, a pretty good demo. Grade C

Puce Feels like an action sequence in a movie. Vocals are excellent. This is my style. I love it. Nothing at all I would change. Great song! Grade A+

Rule 6 More rock… woot! This would rock the room if it was mixed better. Vocals need enhancing and the guitar it very compressed. Drums sound great. Grade B

Stephen B Nothing wrong here. Sounds great. Not a big fan of this style. Grade A

The best of the best of the best. Woodward and Puce.
Puce +1 cause it made me wake up at work!

Apparently it was more like stagerage. Yeah, that's how I get when I record vocals, too.

I thought I posted this before, but apparently not: SaxMan, not only did Stephen offer some reasonable criticisms of my song, he also said he liked it, so I wasn't about to complain. I find that kind of review much more helpful than "Electrofunkaction", which somebody said earlier. I'd rather get some form of criticism or even nothing at all than that. The only complaint I have about Stephen is the fact that he compared every song to Josh Woodward’s and then told us our songs were all worse. Talk about telling me something I already know!

The only other thing(s) I have to say is.

I didn't think Puce was upset, nor was looking for a wagon to jump.

Constructive Critisism is good, and I have done my fair share I'm sure.

Arrogence is not only all our enemies, it is wolf wearing a grandmother costume.

I can see how my earlier comments may have seemed enraged, or sinical, I'll take the blame, it seems to be the mood I'm in while listening to this and reading this stuff.

...on another, and a final, comment I vote for Abom on principal... it was that or Josh. And myself being somewhat (or intirely) a jazz saxophonist, I love the long groove and whish there were more people who could sustain them, I'd colab on more solo's. But man, loved the train thing Josh, that was hot, I almost cried. Wish I could vote twice.

Good fight. Puce is the Pawnbroker's Pimp daddy, yo.

Abominominous Funky as it is, this tracks' too long for me. It's well played, especially the wah, and the vocal suits the song perfectly (even the over-saturation.) The bass sounds squashed and clipped on my system (and did I miss the title reference?)
Good for: gardening.

The BeWells Wow, I like this lot ... The guitar tones are perfect. That gently-saturated lead tone is about the best a guitar can sound, IMO. I noticed the vocal lose definition a couple of times (around 2:43 for example). Not sure if it's a volume issue, or some conflict between the vox and the bass. Hardly matters, though. Great job.
Good for: shagging

Rule 6 I like what you did with the title, and the song's well played on the whole. The vocals don't sit in the mix most of the time, though, and there's lots of digital clipping. Are you compressing, or just pushing the final level? (And did you mix it mono on purpose?)
Good for: bustin' skull

Eight Legged Oedipus This seems like the kind of track that'll grow on me with repeated listens. It keeps my interest, even if it lacks an obvious hook, so much that I listened to it again right away. The mix lacked sparkle on my system, although you may have been going for a dark sound (or it could just be the 128K encoding) .. I'm noting it just in case. Oh, and the vocals fit perfectly.
Good for: 3am cocktails

Stephen B This is FoW without the hook. It's well played, and even the few loose places (e.g. the end of the first chorus) fit the style. That snare tone, mixed the to right level, is a rarity on Songfight! And good harmonies, too. I'll bet you could fit even more in: the lead melody has a simple Chris Collingwood lilt that begs for accompaniment. (FYI, there's some obvious mix thing in the left channel at 0:33.)
Good for: drivin'

The Miasmatics It's mixed right for the parts. The song as a whole doesn't do much for me, but top marks for Bagpuss!
Good for: cleaning the trailer

Puce It doesn't sound muffled to me at all! This is the best I've heard from you, no question. The intro is phat! And I love all the treats ... the flams, rolls, and synth candy. A mix observation: the bass sounds better with my sub on, so you may be missing a little low-mid range. Or not. I love it either way.
Good for: angrying up the blood. (And getting my vote)

Level Nivelo I don't mind this, but I can't think of anything specific that I like about it. Odd. The bottom end on the lead vocal a bit muddy on my system. Some kind of weird ambience, though it doesn't sound like there's any reverb on your voice. And the harmony on the left is jarring. Maybe just too loud.
Good for: cheese, with wine

Josh Woodward Great song. I like that you're right in your element for #40. Seems fitting. Honestly, you only have Puce to blame if you don't win.
Good for: Snowy nights

Feldspar This song has a good structure (and good take on the title,) but I found it a little too long, at least for the instrumentation. You also hit a pet peeve of mine: when you sing "I don't wanna be known as ..." [at 0:48], you stretch the "I" out into 2 or 3 syllables. It sounds like "aaaa...HIE don't", and the extra syllable and "h" draws attention to your singing style, which in turn draws me out of the song. That out of the way, it's a decent track.
Good for: a few pints with the team

Kamakura It has good moments. Everything fits together well for the chorus line, especially the Maj7th chord. Counter-intuitively, though, the drums draw attention to themselves by being so inconspicuous. In the end the song's a bit too monotonous for my taste.
Good for: opening gifts

Beowulf Kingsley Clipping <sigh>. FWIW, I keep getting Roger Waters from your voice. (Dylan, not so much.) The solo's well played, but the rest of the arrangement ... Well, it's tough to pull off out-of-tune instruments. There's a better song in there, with a remix. Bass down, drums up, guitars down, harmonies ... uh ... sideways I guess. Try EQ'ing the body out of the backing vocal (maybe 200-400Hz?)
Good for: the morning after

Now that I have had a chance to give all the songs at least a few listens, here are my thoughts and comments.

Abominominous - This has a good live funk groove going, but there's not quite enough to keep me interested through the entire 14 minutes (this would probably be better live instead of sitting in front of my computer). I love the feel of the drums, the wah guitar, and the use of pauses to break things up a bit. One thing that I kept wanting was for things to break out of the groove and be a little more inventive...a guitar solo, a little organ or clav...something apart from the nice rhythmic variations to add a little more depth to the sound and style.

Beowulf Kingsley - I like the intro to this one, but the vocal style is a little odd. That and some of the out of tune bits of the playing are slightly off-putting but not necessarily bad. When the chorus kicks in with the chimes and the harmonies it becomes more appealing in some strange way. I also like the sound of the lead guitar parts. I generally like it, but this would be much better if things were tightened up some.

The BeWells - This is mine but I'll add some comments anyway. The lyrics turned out a little better than I thought they would and the atmosphere of the song is close to what I wanted. The biggest problem with this is the recording of the vocals. They are a little too quiet and weak, but I didn't notice that until I was trying to mix everything together. The other thing this song needs is better structure and a more interesting arrangement. After doing the initial improvised takes to get the general feel and flow of the song I didn't have any great ideas to change things up so I kept what I had. Apart from that I have a lot to learn about mixing, so there are plenty of things I will be working on improving for future fights. Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions thus far.

Eight Legged Oedipus - This song has a catchy sound to it. That bass line has been popping back into my head over the last few days. I like the groove of the rhythm and the vocals in the verse and the change to the more open, airy da-da-da part. There's a little room for improvement, but this is a good song and nothing in particular stood out to me as bad.

Feldspar - This has a nice change of pace from the 4/4 timing and has a fun feel to it. I like the rhythm guitar, but the second single note guitar part is a little too synthetic sounding. I liked the part where the synth comes in (reminded me of that disney electric light parade) and also enjoyed the sound of the parts with the vocal effect. The effect at the end felt a little out of place. I generally liked the song but it needed a little bit more instrumentation of some sort to fill out the sound.

Josh Woodward - I loved this song. This has a wonderful dark tone to it and a great mix and use of space. The lyrics are great with rich images...it was easy to picture what was taking place. I like the cyclical feel of the chorus and the way that is echoed in the guitar playing. The organ and strings add a nice touch to fill out the sound. The train and distorted effect are tastefully done without distracting from the music.

Kamakura - There are some nice elements to this song, but overall it seems too simplistic. Adding a little variety to the chord voicings, using more of the stereo field, and a more developed chorus would add a lot to this one. The low vocal almost works but it feels like it is a bit too close to the bottom of the vocal range where there's not quite enough strength.

Level Nivelo - I like the accordian-like circusy/carnivalesque feel of this song. The vocal harmonies in the chorus are a little jarring, but they kind of emphasize the "icky, muddy, and strange" line.

The Miasmatics - The song idea for this one is nice but I would have liked to hear a bigger arrangement. As it is it the vocal needs a little more consistency with pitch, but along with the guitar this mostly sounds alright as a simple arrangement.

Puce - This song is nicely done...and good to hear something that rocks. I love the blending of the electronic sounds into the song. The distorted vocal solo is a great touch along with the change to the higher falsetto voice on the third line of the chorus. I don't listen to much of this style, but the arrangement was interesting throughout and the quality of the song makes it stand out.

Rule 6 - I generally like the song, but it sounds a bit messy and uneven. The instrumentation and arrangement itself seems alright, so it is mostly the recording and mixing that could be improved along with the pitch on the vocals. It was good having another rock song in the mix.

Stephen B. - Overall this song has nice instrumentation and good sound. I like the vocals and harmonies. This one has good potential if the recording and mix could be cleaned up a bit and--not sure how to describe what I'm thinking here--given a richer sound with more presence or detail brought forward with the vocals and some of the instruments.

At this point for me it is still a toss up between Puce and Josh. I will need to give those songs a few more listens before deciding on a vote.

First, thanks to everybody for the critiques, positive and negative...I’m still wrassling with this stuff as are many of us, and I can use all the help and useful suggestions I can get! Most especially with mixes and recording approaches (thanks deshead by the way, I did pull out those frequencies and it cleaned the vcls up a lot). Don’t know if I’m really qualified to review, but here’s my impressions:

Abominominous: GREAT groove. I don’t know if it sustains the song for the length of it, but I think that would depend on where you are and what you’re doing when you’re hearing it...if I was on the dance floor, well yeah...

BeWells: Luminous tune here. Great guitars and really nice vocal delivery. I’d just like the vocals a bit higher, it’s a bit hard to get the story, but that might just be my speakers.

Eightleggedoedipus: I love the bass! The syncopations here between it and the other instruments really make the tune. I like the break chorus, nice touch. Funny lyrics too.

Feldspar: Lyrics are cool here...I like the straighforward delivery. Sort of like old David Peel, except with a better and more in tune voice, and a brain. The synth in the break is kind of surreal.

Josh Woodward: Beautiful. Excellent production brings out a great piece of music, guitar playing is exceptional. A vocal style I have to be in the right mood to hear (not that I wouldn’t love to be able to do that, given my voice). Brilliant lyrics.

Kamakura: Finally someone with a lower voice than mine! Kind of dark and subdued...it could develop musically a bit more through the song. Might benefit from a bridge, maybe...

Level Nivelo: These guys sound like the voices in my head. Just great. Like They Might Be Giants drinking absinthe. I’d like to hear this with a real accordion, but the casio-like synths sounds good too.

The Miasmatics: Nice to get the story song in this format. Vocals reminiscent of a Johnny Cash follower. Some minor time problems and definitely some vocal pitch issues (but who am I to talk!). Could be tightened up just a bit, but maybe that’s not what you’re going for...

Beowulf Kingsley (Me): Looking back, I’d redo it all! Change the verse melody, retune the damm rhythm guitars, pull down the harmonies, tear out my vocal cords and replace them, change the tempo...but I wanted to get something up one way or another, and not just dither and not finish it, so there it is. I think the lyrics have some heart, anyway, though they’re not exactly deathless poetry.

Rule 6: My girlfriend were jumping up and headbanging to this, man! I love the lyrics and the delivery. Only critique I might have is that the drums seem a trifle restrained for the song, and somehow they seem to stand apart from the other instruments and the vocals in the mix. Possibly a level or an EQ thing? But a cool song.

Stephen Bellinski: I love this song. Great story, great lyrics, nice instrumentation, and I wish I had your voice, dammit. Excellent, affecting work (I think).

Puce: Yow! Searing stuff. That chorus, man, that’s a classic. Some great production on this one for sure. I’d love to have some details on this recording (What’d you record this with? What synths are you using? Gtrs? Etc.)...it has that vibe of the classic Postpunk New Wave thing of the 80s, way updated into this century. Like this a lot. And the solo (distorted vocal, right?)...perfect.

...So I’m still unsure about who comes out on top with all this stuff. Eightleggedoedipus, Puce and Josh Woodward all had amazing tunes, but Rule 6, Level Nivelo and Stephen Bellinski really, really pulled my attention as well. I’ll have to meditate on it a little more, I think.

Recorded With: FruityLoops
Guitar: Ibanez Gio ($200 CDN)
Synths: V-Station (I would be using the built in FruityLoops synths, but I only have demo versions that don't save parameters properly)
Solo: Yep, improvised operatic vocals through a guitar amp

I actually need to find a new synth for doing simple sounding Casio stuff, because the V-Station has a nasty demoralization bug that crashes my PC.

VST file writer. Audio passing through the plugin (including inputs from the soundcard) is written to disk. I then load these back into Fruity as audio tracks.

I know, I know, I should get with the times.

Please don't ever get a kickass studio. Please?

Though it pains me to mention this, if you wanted to use FL, you could use a program such as Sonar and link it in as a DXi (or VSTi, I forget which) instrument. That way you could use a real multitracker to do the vox and guitars, and FL to do the sequencing. It works really well.

Damn! I tried to find an assignment I had done in binary for a class where we had to program an old embeded system, but I must have deleted it. And yes, it was done in vi. Counterintuitivly that makes me manlier than a "real" man (most likely some type of viking).

Back on topic [a bit]: I will be switching, most likely to Cubase, after I finish building my midi drumset. So no time soon.

Abominominous: : So I listened to this at work, and right now I'm gonna jam to it on the guitar just to pretend I'm hanging with you guys... {gojamtotrack} ....whoa. That was fun. You definitely win easiest to jam to... I dig the vibe of it, I totally enjoyed wailing on the guitar over it, but when I checked it out earlier in the week... it seemed just too long on the same stuff without any thing to keep me hooked in. some cool ideas, and moods. I'll probably jam to it again.

Beowulf Kinglsey The bass seems really dominant. It's ok, but not turning me one huge. This is the kind of thing that I want to like but really don't. Things I like: The tone of your voice, the full rich spectrum of tone in the whole thing actually, has a nice sound, but the bass is too loud. It seems like stuff is out of tune, the jangly guitar... the backing voclas... yeah, this is ok, but in my opinion, it could use a remix. Drones a bit. So, no vote for you...

The Bewells Nice sound right off, that's cool. I like all the playing, the ideas, and the intimate sounding , desperate vocals are nice, but some of the words get a little lost, my ears have to dig abit to fully focus on it... so I must stop typing and listen better....I love your guitar playing on this. It seems that a solo that had some space would really shine on this.. good.. a CONTENDER.

8leggedoedipus Fucking awesome, right off the bat. Reminds me of Dylan Nau. Seriously, I am loving this... awesome mix, awesome playing... great groove...I love the wacky grooves, the bass is like a circus show, the drums are tight, very crisp grooves... Is that a live drummer? Either live or programmed, I love the drums too. SERIOUS CONTENDER. SUPER. I want to hear more.

Feldspar. This is a good song. Super folky vibe, and I like the energy. There's little things here and there that could be tighter sounding, but man, I don't think, for whatever reason, that I've heard your stuff in a while. This seems like you've gotten better. No knock on previous stuff mind you, but great song. Occasional vocal tuning issues though... otherwise, nice vibe. 8legged.* still ahead, but you get CONTENDER ranking anyway...

..damn, this is a wicked fight so far...

Josh Pink Floydish, Queensryche... I like it. Fucking great fight so far... I love what you do with your guitar these days... and I like the mood.. still like 8.* better, but you get CONTENDER too... gonna have to have another tier in my mental ranking here... some great sounding stuff. Josh, this is a great tune. I totally dug it. ... coulda used some Nick Masonish quarternote ride cymbal backbeat grooving to give it another three minutes with a creepy bassline and a bluesy space solo ... maybe on the extendamix....

Kamakura Not feeling it compared to the competition... it's got some cool bits, but the drums kill it. You need better drums on this thing. The drum feel is all wrong.. it needs more dynamic life in it. Ok.

Level Nivelo Damn, I know your stuff as soon as I hear it. You are very unique in style. I like the groove, I like the idea of the feel, I like the sick vocals. . I realize that for me, I like your stuff cause it's always so fucking bizarre. The thing that I don't like are your harmonies they are out of tune in a way that makes me unhappy. And that loud accordionorgan thing... gotta go to the back o the class on that one. Ok.

Miasmatics
Not very interesting to me. Maybe if we were hanging out and gonna jam, I'd be be into it more, but compared to the other stuff going on here this week, your tune is not the winner. In my books anyway. It gets a littleore fun near the end. More life and energy there or something. Ok.

Puce I know it's you right away. Very epic sounding. Another Contender, CONTENDER. I might have to have a playoffs... I gotta admit, that snare sound.. could be better. I love your voice. And the groove rocks. How'd you do the bassline? It's stellar..fat and heavy. Yours is the first song where the story of the tune was immediately was in my mental imagery... the gun under the bed bit hooked my in. Dana says this is one of her favourites so far (she's been listening too...) PLAYOFFS....

Rule 6 Not working for me. I like that it's a band, but the mix isn't that great...not a vote earner. Good band vibe.

Stephen Bellinski Not bad poppy psuedo country sound as far as I hear it... there's stuff hear that's not that strong, especially compared to ...well...you know... it seems to waver to me... of course, that could just be the result of my recreational life style. I like the feel, it reminds me of the Northern Pikes....

PLAYOFFS:

Ok, Dana and I are having a playoffs between Puce, 8leggedoedipus, and Josh... some other strong tunes here, but we only get one winner....

8leggedoedipus: [/b]
Leaf: Low volume listen.... fuck ya. Turn it up...
Dana: It's mellow and groovy at the same time, thats cool....
Leaf: How can you not like this?
Dana : Catchy (starts humming with dada's)
Leaf: I like that spacey solo...
Dana: Yeah, spacey is a good word for this...
Leaf: Anything else?
Dana: Next song.

JOSH:
Dana: Nice guitar sound, it's kinda relaxing, but crisp at the same time, if that maks anysense... yeah, I like this one.
Leaf: I like this one alot too, it's excellent, but so is 8legged, and it's quirkier , which I totally like, this one is so lush though.
Dana : And it makes me so emotional...
Leaf: ooohh.. That's a cool thing to say.
Dana: Yeah, he sounds really, emoting] ... it's him...

PUCE
Leaf: I wish it wasn't programmed drums, or at least... I love the bass drum sounds, but the snare , its not crisp. It get's my head bobbin.. and it really starts....ohh, I like that solo, didn't notice that the first time!
Dana : The vocals suck me in.. I don't even notice the drum machine..
Leaf: That 's a good point..
Dana : Good beat too... fun to move to ...it's boppy...
Leaf: I like this part right here... "that 22 that noone..or is it Noah bought..."
Dana : It' slike the bad step father situation...

Leaf: kay, who's the winner?
Dana: shit... who is it for you...
Leaf...uhh..I dunno.
Dana: I'd have to say... Josh's. It moved me... I see your suprised... Puce was close..and your going with 8legged aren't you?
Leaf: The way I see it... we both got the same 2nd!!

LEAF:
1. 8 legged.
2. Puce.
3. Josh

Dana:

2.Puce
3. 8 legged.
