An auxiliary send. Cubase calls them FX Channels. They're like a group track that runs "parallel" to your mix, usually used for when you want to blend in different amounts of the same effect (usually reverb or delay, but sometimes compression) on multiple tracks. By using only one effect you save CPU, and possibly time. On some DAWs you can route aux busses out of your DAW to a standalone hardware effects unit, and then back in.
