That sounds a bit risky to me. But I decided to load AVG and give it a go. It found several Trojan down loaders and some spyware. 13 so far. One cool thing, AVG isn't letting the viruses freeze my computer as it finds and removes them.
It's been on C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\dllcache\kbdhu.dll for like, 30 minutes. It's either stuck there, or it is a big file system. But nothing is frozen and I can click on things, like file, history, etc.

Well, if you're just going to go "OOH I'M TOO ASCAREDED TO DO THAT" when people give you excellent advice, then my help and support ends right here. :|

You already messed it up by letting a virus get on your system.

kbdhu.dll is the driver for the Hungarian Keyboard Layout. I realize that your head is low, but there was no joke.

Maybe your head is too high. :P

Something interesting, well to me.
After AVG found and removed 8 virus infections and 5 spywares, things are cool, except the 2 tabs are still gone on my display properties. So just to see if they are gone forever, I added a new user and the tabs are all there on the new user account.
So I figure I can either figure out how to fix my user account or move everything to the new one and delete the fucked up one.

I've never used any anti-virus software (just a router with reasonable firewall settings and some common sense) and I've never had a virus or trojan. If that makes me an idiot, I guess I'm ok with it.

FUCK YOU for the implication that I should be watching every single fucking thread on this board at all times and popping up with helpful advice when it's in a new thread that I have no reason to even know exists.
How's that whole "reading comprehension" thing working out for you, fluff? Keep at it! Alternate, wikipedia-themed version: "Hey Sockpuppet, AGF already". Both versions are to be read with a wink.

FUCK YOU for assuming I meant what you thought I meant.

Seriously, though, I don't use AV myself, but I don't do high-risk computer stuff, and I, also, use a router/firewall. What I meant was, *if* you're going to use AV software, those two are (were, until fluffy showed me what AVG is doing these days) the only ones I'd ever run. I guess I could have phrased it differently.

My reading comprehension is fine. Just because he wasn't blaming me for ClamWin being supposedly responsible, there was still a tone of "HELP ME NOW" and then "oh no I didn't get help fast enough so I'm uninstalling it" which he posted right in the middle of me typing up my lengthy response. Plus I could have sworn I saw a post somewhere where someone was blaming "people like me" for being mean and making programs "just to mess with people." Whatever.

Oh Pah leeeze. That was obvious sarcasm. I know it wasn't a program that you invented just to fuck with me.
Just so you and anyone reading this knows, I honestly don't take things said on the Internet very serious. I understood you were a bit angry from misunderstanding me, so I let you know it's no biggie, because I felt bad that you thought that I was being a dick, when in fact, I was just a bit bugged by my computer issues, not you, Fluffster. I always un-install the last program I installed whenever I have computer issues.

Also, I apologize for laughing at you when you were obviously bothered. But your so funny when you get mad.

Anyway, water under the bridge, in my book.

'k. Actually I hate to blame my own personality problems on external things but I am actually under a bit of stress right now due to some family issues so I'm a bit quick to lash out. Sorry about that.

Having spent my own time in the trenches fighting Wily Worms from the World Wide Web, I know the frustration. BLT, you really have kept your humor and wits about you despite it all. You are an inspiration.

Need new help before I start the XP Pro reload.

I thought everything was OK with my virus issue, but it looks like I was just outrunning it for a while until it killed my HD, as you guys said would probably happen.

OK, here is my issue before I start. I have some music, etc, that I haven't backed up yet to my external HD. I'd prefer not to lose it as well as some other things.

The screen says boot up with my XP disc and hit R to repair. I'd like to do this if possable rather than douche my whole HD. At least until I can get stuff off of it. I hit F8 to boot in safe, but it won't start up.

The corrupt or missing file is : \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
Like I say, I'd like to repair the problem rather than wipe the whole HD. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

To recover your music, take the hard drive out of the computer, put it into an external USB enclosure, and then use that to connect the hard drive to another computer. Then you can recover whatever files you want before you wipe the disk.

I can do that? Cool! I've always thought that windows was on the hard drive. So windows (the operating system) must be in some memory chip, right? Or at least the part that opens the rest of windows on the HD.
I'll do that first. Then do you suggest that I just douche the HD and reload XP from square one?

Windows is on the hard drive, but there is nothing to prevent you from attaching a hard drive which has Windows on it as an external drive on another computer. It's just a bunch of files.

Oh also, on that note, plug the external drive into the other computer only AFTER it's booted, or else you run the risk of booting from it and infecting the clean computer as well.

Ok, I am a bit ascarded about putting my f**ked up HD on a good computer and infecting it. So I remembered someone here a long time ago, it may have been Fluf, talk about Linux Knoppix as a great boot CD if windows crashes, or something to that effect. So I D/Ld the latest version 5.1 something or other and bam, I'm booted off the knoppix OS got to everything on my HD. The Ice Weasel browser is really cool too, It softens hands while you do the dishes.....in fact, I'm soaking in it right now. :P

As soon as I get everything off my HD that I need, I'm going to douche it.

Who all uses a different OS than windows?
