The Niviverse Top 10 for this week

10. "Who Is It" by Bjork
There's something about the layers of this song that is so intriguing and has earned it so many plays on my jukebox.

9. "World" by New Order
I really enjoy the Republic album and this past week, I spent some time getting reacquainted with it.

8. "Radio Ready" by the Hell Yeahs
I've been a Hell Yeahs mood lately. Their songs have such great narratives.

7. "Raise Kaiko" by Onmyouza
I'm still loving this ballad and I still wish I had a translation.

6. "Stranger" by Made Out of Babies
I'm still loving MOoB's "The Ruiner". It's clearly becoming one of my all-time favorite albums.

5. "No Saving Me" by Walls of Jericho
I just picked up the WoJ album "With Devils Amongst Us All" and I'm surprised that I've latched on to the ballad.

4. "Let's Dance to Joy Division" by the Wombats
Because of this and their cover of Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love", I am enjoying the Wombats.

3. "I'm a Lady" by Santogold f/ Trouble Andrew
Many say that Santogold is M.I.A.-lite. M.I.A. couldn't produce a song like this.

2. "Put On" by Young Jeezy f/ Kanye West
Now that this song is in a commercial, it's stuck in my head all the time.

1. "I Don't Care" by Apocalyptica f/ Adam Gontier
It hangs on to #1 for a 3rd week, but it's losing steam. It's still a great song.

Hey Niv - How does all of this come about? What do you listen on and, I assume, that you listen to much more than 10 songs during the week. Just curious. I tend to listen to albums at a time.

Where's Caravan Ray when you need him: I'm drinking, near to the point of fdrink, and listening to Exile On Main Street. I wish it were as simple as saying "come on over for a pop!"

Basically, in a week I spend a lot of time listening to music whether on my computer or my mp3 player. When the end of the week comes around, I look at my computer's playlist and say to myself- what did I listen to the most this past week? What was I really enjoying listening to this past week. I compile a list (I'm way to big on lists) and then narrow it down to a top 10.

This past week, I got the Walls of Jericho album, so there was bound to be a song from there in my top 10. I spent some time listening to the Ruiner, so that's how "Stranger" stayed in my top 10. This was the week where I finally saw the video for "Raise Kaiko", that helped it join my top ten. "Who Is It" was my sing-a-long song of the week. On Wednesday, I had a Hell Yeahs Day at work where I played about 11 of their songs. Radio Ready being the fave of the Day. You get the picture on how it all comes together...

The Niviverse Top 10

10."Man of the Hour" by the Worldy Self Assurance
I think I'm finally grasping the depth of this song now.

9. "I'm A Lady" by Santogold (f/ Trouble Andrew)
I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying Santogold. She's not my usual. But so far I've enjoyed Creator, LES Artistes, Guns of Brooklyn and this song.

8. "Leeds United" by Amanda Palmer
All this talk of the Dresden Dolls break-up/hiatus led to some spins of the Amanda Palmer album and this song stood out.

7. "US Placers" by CRS
Lupe Fiasco + Pharrell + Kanye West + Thom Yorke = Good stuff. That Thom Yorke chorus is such a good touch.

6. "Spy Hunter" by Project 86
A trip to Pure Volume made me stumble across this song from a band that I had forgotten all about.

5. "Tape Song" by The Kills
Midnight Boom looks like it will be the breakthrough album for the Kills, at least in the Niviverse.

4. "Che.r.ry" by Yui
Beware of super cute, super catchy J-Pop. It may be a ridiculous song about professing love via text message but Yui's delivery makes it burrow its way into your mind. The live acoustic version of this is killer.

3. "Put On" by Young Jeezy and Kanye West
I'd never had any love for Young Jeezy and I previously had the hate jones for Kanye. This changed my mind about both of them. Kanye's part is one of his best.

2. "Stranger" by Made Out Of Babies
I'm still not getting tired of this amazing MOoB album.

1. "The '59 Sound" by the Gaslight Anthem
One night just before going to sleep, I caught this song on Fuse and immediately fell in love with it. I've had it on brainwash rotation ever since.

This week's Niviverse Top 10

10. "God Only Knows" by Giant Drag
I hate "Big Love" with a passion and for a while I was hating this song by association. I've gotten over that.

9. "Easy Lover" by Jaded Heart
A European metal band rocking out on the Phil Collins/Philip Bailey song. How could you not love that?

8. "Losing My Religion" by Daphne
It's a French songstress belting out a wonderful strings-laden cover.

7. "Shut Up and Let Me Go/ That's Not My Name" by the Ting Tings
It's gotten to the point where I treat these two songs as one, kinda like "We Will Rock You/ We are the Champions"

6. "The Donkey Headed Adversary of Humanity Opens the Discussion" by Sleepyhead Gorilla Museum
This is my theme song of the Election season.

5. "Walking the Border" by Octothorpe
I've been listening to the 2008 SF Archive and this is a big standout.

4. "Kung Fu Jumping" by DJ Schmolli
Mixing Carl Douglas with House of Pain is brilliant and then add in the Kriss Kross (and get me to enjoy it) and it's my one of my new favorite mashups.

3. "Head Over Heels" by Katy Perry
Katy Perry has been very gimmicky with songs like "I Kissed a Girl" and "UR So Gay". This cover proves she's more than a gimmick.

2. "A Minha Menina" by Os Mutantes
Damn McDonald's commercial. The super-catchy song of the week.

1. "The '59 Sound" by The Gaslight Anthem
Every hear a song and immediately feel like you know all the words, it's that's instant connection. That's my feeling on this song.

Hey thanks, Niv. It makes me very happy that my rare attempt at playing the guitar still resonates. It was a big hit at our most recent show, as well.

Wait.. I knew about that song before the commercial (in fact put the English version "She's My Shoo-shoo" on a mix CD that I gave to a couple to celebrate their couple-ness). Does that mean that for the first time in my life I was into something before it was cool?

This week's Niviverse Top 10

10. "Oh Father" by Giant Drag
Giant Drag scores again with another cover. This time, it's them doing my all-time favorite Madonna song.

9. "Never Tear Us Apart" by The Tyrrell Corporation
Capturing the emotion of the original, yet still innovating; it's a great cover.

8. "The 59 Sound" by The Gaslight Anthem
Ain't supposed to die on a Saturday Night.

7. "Take On Me" by RAC f/ Karl Kling
I have been loving 80's covers. This is one of the best from Bulletlibre Rewind.

6. "No Taylor, No Scar" by Norwegian Recycling
A great mash-up of the Fugees, Jack Johnson, Missy Higgins and Men at Work!

5. "I'm Outstanding" by Stopwatcher
The way-too-catchy song of the week.

4. "In the Valley" by Johnny Cashpoint
One of the best J$ songs ever. This goes on the J$ greatest hits album.

3. "Head Over Heels" by Katy Perry
Her voice is so nice on this. It gives a new depth to the song.

2. "Walking the Border" by Octothorpe
There's nothing like walking through Alphabet City in NYC while listening to Octothorpe.

1. "Closer To The Truth" by Cryoshell
So my eldest son is into Lego Bionicle. I check out their website and end up finding this amazing song.

Thanks and thanks, Niv!

PS if you liked 'Interesting Times' but wondered what it would sound like with a bit of tidying up - bass turned down slightly, the flange effect on the vocal switched off, and the end chorus re-instated (as various people in reviews suggested) - you can find out at http://www.johnnycashpoint.com/mofw/joh ... int_it.mp3

The Niviverse Top 10

10. "In the Valley" by Johnny Cashpoint
There's pain and there's piss and that's all that there is.

9. "Why So Serious?" by Atari in the Desert
Lonbobby + Freddielove = all sorts of good.

8. "Falling Snow" by Agalloch
If you could turn the feeling of being lost in the woods into music, it would be Agalloch.

7. "March of the Wolfmasters/Violet Stars Happy Hunting" by Janelle Monae
What if Andre 3000 was a girl who wrote like Ben Kreiger?

6. "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon
The way too catchy song of the week.

5. "Why So Serious?" by Uncle Gravy Biscuits
This week, I almost finished listening to all of the SF songs of 2008 (I still need to listen to Scary Thing and Shoelace Soup). This song really stood out with it's crazy lyrics.

4. "Head Over Heels" by Katy Perry
This almost didn't make the chart, thanks to overplay of "Hot & Cold", but I still think this is a great cover.

3. "Walking the Border" by Octothorpe
A lot of # play on my jukebox this week (including this, "That's Not What I Need" and "Kick Start").

2. "The 59 Sound" by Gaslight Anthem
1. "Closer To the Truth" by Cryoshell
Almost too close to call. I have really enjoyed both of these songs alot.

Maybe. I'll see what my situation allows. I just got into a lease with someone else, so I might be stuck here until next August/September... but as comfortable as I am in Columbus, I'm not going anywhere I want in life. (Read: I'm not a universally-loved rock star yet.)
