How many pure G&G songs are recorded to a click though? Seems almost to go against the spirit of that, er, "genre". G&G should be recorded in as "live" a situation as possible, imho.

I'm too brain dead to record to a click. I can record to a drum loop, however, then wipe it off before I ship.

I'm pretty sure my 'How Do You Like The Colors' was recorded to a click. I can't remember if 'Courage' was, but I don't think so.

I'm the same way, Slats. My musical upbringing started with a live drummer. It feels so cold and unnatural for me to play to a click, but I have no problem with a programmed drum loop. Preferably a drum loop that also fits the style of guitar I'm playing, but I'm trying to break that habit.

I hate 'pure G&G.' I don't even like it that much in an actual live setting. If you're going to base your carp around acoustic guitar and vocals, please do something to spice it up. I try not to make anything more minimal than like...All We Could See at the Window by BMF. The vocal and rhythm guitar were recorded with one mic in one live take. Now that I think back, I have no idea if I recorded with a metronome. But if not, I was able to keep decent enough time to record all the other stuff to it. And it's BMF, so who cares. There's like a different set of rules for that. And I would never expect that song to get this treatment. But enough about that.

Programming drums to like...a Wages demo or something...is in my humble opinion...a complete waste of precious time, an exercise in futility, and not very good practice for very many real world skills. I think people need to have their shit together or we shouldn't bother doing anything with their stuff. Your tempo shouldn't wobble in a studio recording unless there's a legitimate artistic reason for it. And I kind of see how you're saying that there may be in an intimate acoustic song. But I mean...it still seems rather amateur to me if you don't do it. I may try it, anyway. We'll have to see. My advice to G&Gers is to use a met or a drum loop from this point on, so I don't get a migraine and give up halfway through my lovely version of your song...that is, if you want it to be subjected to this thing.

By the way, I'm pretty interested in this project, and I would like to see someone select a song we could work on...preferably one with a steady tempo?

I did my first one with Quimby on the Come Down title. But it's not exactly per the rules because she rerecorded her guitar and vocals to fit slight changes.

But I'm still up for this, I just don't have the ambition or time to think about it.

They are all (so far) G&G song (for now) except for "We Keep Them Alive."

"Father Kennedy" is in E minor, not recorded to click.
"Sucker Punch" is in E major, I think it was something like 160 bpm; will have to check later.
"Scry" starts in D and then transposes to G, 95 bpm.
"Take It From a Liar" is in G major. 110 bpm.
"Waiting for the Other Shoe to Drop" is in C major. don't remember the tempo.
"14 Stories" is also in C. Also don't remember tempo; will look up later.

I'm interested, but if I chose to "produce" the song as a hip-hop beat, would that fall outside the rules?

I can't speak for everyone, but if you're using one of my tracks, you have my blessing to do whatever you want with it.

I don't think there are any rules on the genre you turn the G&G song into. That's kind of the idea. You are turning a G&G song into a song that can hook the general public on the radio, etc.

But then what if I got motivated to rap on it? would that break the "lead vocals" rule that you implied?

As long as the G&G song remains as it it, then how ever you add vocals to it is all good.
