No, I don't use my real name, my parents would have had to hate me to name me "Heuristics" as a first name. My first name is actually 'bill' which I sign on every post.
My actual last name is harder to pronounce and spell than anyone else's around here, I think. It's not hard to find out but I don't tend to bandy it about, some sort of crazy privacy ideas or something, I guess.
It is funny making friends on Facebook... for a while I was thinking, "Who is this person Facebook thinks I should be friends with? I don't know her!" And then I realized, oh yeah, I do. Just hadn't connected the name to a username.

The really awesome thing is that my sister's husband's last name (which is Senegalese and sounds like a conjunction and a verb) makes my sister's post-marriage full name sound like something you'd shout at someone you really dislike, or perhaps the end result of Austin Powers consummating a relationship with a group of killer femme-bots. It is the sort of name that would be subject to complete disbelief in a work of fiction.

Maybe not as bad as "Ivana Humpalot," but close.

LMNOP is not my real name. It's not even the real fake band name that I've used for the past twenty years as a label on my stuff. I'm not really hiding anything, though - I revealed my full name in a post re: anagrams and over the years I've linked to things on websites that are publicly registered to me.

Since we're sort of on the subject, jast and I share our not-super-common surname. Here in the states, it's also on the back of lots of folding chairs and, 70-some years ago, was also on the very first canned beer.

Yeah, my name's Andrew Reist. I pretty much hate the first name though, since I've known like 20 andrews in my life so far. It makes it tough to define yourself when everybody has the same name, you know?

I assume Canada's social insurance number is used much more reasonably and responsibly than it is in the US. In the US, the SSN is considered such a vital secret that having it is considered "proof" of all sorts of things, and you can do all sorts of damage to someone - get a credit card or other loan in their name and ruin their credit, get a phone line and post office box and such in their name and commit all sorts of fraud which gets automatically pinned on the victim of the identity theft. It's a big part of why identity theft is such a huge deal in the US - it's very easy to do, and can be extremely damaging.

Also, in the situation I was in, I was having a hell of a difficult time trying to start or establish my career (being fresh out of school in a highly-specialized field which prefers "experienced professionals" - nobody wants to be the one to train a junior-caliber engineer to be senior-caliber, and nobody wanted to hire me for a junior position) and I found even a vague threat towards that end to be a huge potential problem. Now that my track record and experience can speak for itself it's not as much of a concern, but at the time, the last thing I wanted was to have certain things (both real and fictional) a matter of easily-accessible public record as part of a cursory Google search.

Pretty much the same with our S.I.N. up here, except it needs to be cross-referenced with a date of birth (pretty easy to find, usually), or other proof such as mother's maiden name. (a bit trickier to find). Identity theft happens up here, too, but the argument happening on the forum I mentioned was that if even your full name is posted online, a whole world of hurt will automatically come crashing down on you... maybe it's just my nature, but this seemed like a paranoid and unreasonable view, so I posted my info as a challenge for someone to fuck me up. I suppose a real psychopath *could* have fucked me up, but, like I said, nothing happened.

However, I once posted my ISP email addy on this board (that is to say, the account I actually care about, unlike hotmail or gmail or other spam traps) and some useless piece of shit cocksucker put me on a Viagra spamlist. I suspect it was Caravan Ray.

So, the big pile of Song Fighter CDs arrived yesterday. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with how good everyone else's CD looks/feels. Where does everyone get their CDs made? I feel very underwhelmed by Discmakers in comparison. I see Elaine DiMasi used CD Centric, who I'd never heard of, but most people just don't say (I haven't checked all of them though).

Well, Todd McHatton's is obviously (very lovingly!) home-made, or at least the packaging is. But the rest... there's something a lot more satisfying about how the jewelcases feel in my hands.

Also, I think I really should have sprung for the shrinkwrap, even though it's a huge waste of resources to encase the CD in something which specifically exists only to be thrown out right away.

It also looks like many of these were pressed, not short-run, which might explain the higher quality. I just couldn't justify spending that much money on that many CDs though, especially since it seems like digital downloads are where the future is.
