Kind of an off topic question, but are you a citizen there now? (I would assume that would be a requirement for jury duty... here they randomly select people from voter registration, I believe).Caravan Ray wrote:I'm surprised I have not been called in New Zealand yet.

Stupid fact of the day: You're more likely to dump your bike/scoot on day one, usually within a block of the dealership.Generic wrote:DRC: My wife got her motorcycle license today, and within mere hours, she was test-driving a new scooter...and wrecking it.
Glad the damage(s) aren't permanent, JE.
Congrats to bill & mrs. bill!
QOTD: didn't make it through selection. Was a rough living drunk & disorderly + assault. I told the lawyer during jury selection/questioning that I liked to drink. Buh-bye blondie.
DRC: F-ing vegan farts are the worst. Our singer gassed us out last night at practice. Un-holy stench. UN-holy. Learned that performing in a gas mask is a viable option (though it'll take some work to get used to the lack of peripheral vision, especially for finding the mike, heh). Finally, something that makes my hair look even sillier.

The IRL band I'm in, Whoregasm (people really need to stop letting me name things). We have some motivational issues.

While that is a good point, yesterday's accident was her fault. Which is going to make our insurance premiums shoot sky-high, as this is her second accident in something like 70 days.roymond wrote:Ouch. Be careful (to her via you). I drove a motorcycle for a few years and stopped after the realization that there's no such thing as a fender bender. I had two close calls with cars and there's little someone can do on a cycle at that point. You can be as careful as you want, but you can't make other people drive carefully.Generic wrote:DRC: My wife got her motorcycle license today, and within mere hours, she was test-driving a new scooter.

So I take it the scooter dealership didn't have any sort of insurance to cover things like that?

Re: April 16, 2009
As an Australian citizen - I am essentially a NZ permanent resident by default. I can work, come and go as I please, whatever. They don't even stamp my passport. If I have lived here for one year continuously (ie. in June), I can vote. That is exactly the same rule for Kiwi citizens (most Kiwis spend at least some of their lives living/working in Australia or UK). I guess I will probably be eligible for jury duty as of June, when I go on the electoral role - if I am still here.Eric Y. wrote:Kind of an off topic question, but are you a citizen there now? Basically - so many Kiwis, especially skilled Kiwis leave to go to Australia where everything is better (wages, tax, social welfare, weather, sporting teams, opportunities, etc..etc...) - Aussie's actually moving to NZ are very rare. We are essentially made one of the family immediately. Many Kiwis labour under the misconception that NZ will one day eventually become an Australian state. Most Australians are shocked to discover this.

Did you ever stop and think about how weird we are? In most walks of life it would not be considered polite to call someone "Rabid." Yet here we are.

Yeah, the whole "jury of your peers" thing never made much sense to me. I can be conceited, I know that, but god, some of my peers are idiots.jast wrote:One judge. A professional.Teplin wrote:What do you have instead?jast wrote:QotD: we don't really have that here, so no.

That's so strange. No checks and balances. I was just watching a case in Italy about an American girl named Amanda Knox that was going to school in Italy and is in prison right now for a murder she wasn't involved in because "the" prosecutor has a gut feeling she is guilty.jast wrote:One judge. He didn't say there was no court of appeal. Just that decisions are made by people actually trained in law. Not 11 idiots and Henry Fonda.Billy's Little Trip wrote:That's so strange. No checks and balances..jast wrote:One judge. A professional.Teplin wrote:

Plus, have you ever seen the way they pick the jury for high profile cases? It's ridiculous. They interview jurors until they find the ones that are best for their client. It's like fantasy football picks or something.Caravan Ray wrote: He didn't say there was no court of appeal. Just that decisions are made by people actually trained in law.
